‘Green Lantern’ Tops Weekend Box Office

But Ryan Reynolds’ Hal Jordan failed to gather as much green as observers may have hoped. By Ryan J. Downey Ryan Reynolds in “Green Lantern” Photo: Warner Bros. The big-screen debut of DC Comics’ “emerald knight” may have been #1 at the box-office over the weekend but it failed to gather as much green as most observers had hoped. “Green Lantern” generated an estimated $52.6 million in its debut weekend, less than the opening numbers for superhero flicks “Thor” and “X-Men: First Class” earlier this year. The heavily marketed potential franchise starter, which stars Ryan Reynolds, cost an estimated $200 million to produce. To put the numbers in perspective, fewer people saw “Green Lantern” on opening weekend than the film adaptations of lesser known superheroes like “Daredevil” and “Ghost Rider.” And critics were not kind to the film. “Green Lantern is a new primer on how not to make a comic book movie … flat FX, smirky acting, clunky writing and clueless direction,” Rolling Stone wrote. “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” was also something of a disappointment relative to previous Jim Carrey comedies. The film, based on the classic book of the same name, opened with $18.2 million, which wasn’t enough to beat last week’s #1 movie, “Super 8.” J.J. Abrams’ throwback homage to ’80s movies like “E.T.” earned another $21.2 million in its second weekend for a $72.7 million total. “X-Men: First Class,” was #4 over the weekend with $11.5 million for a $199.9 million total. While the comic flick’s numbers are lower than most of the movies in the mutant-hero franchise, the reboot/prequel hybrid has enjoyed the best critical response for an “X-Men” movie since “X2.” “The Hangover 2″ rounded out the top five with $9.6 million for a $232.6 million total. And this weekend’s new releases include Disney/Pixar’s “Cars 2″ and the Cameron Diaz comedy “Bad Teacher.” Michael Bay’s “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” follows on Wednesday, June 29. Amy Winehouse Cancels Dates After Disastrous Belgrade Show

Despite recent trip to rehab, singer seemed intoxicated at Serbian music fest. By Gil Kaufman Amy Winehouse (file) Photo: Getty Images/ Dave Hogan Even after going to rehab, troubled singer Amy Winehouse can’t seem to get her act together. The 27-year-old, who has been plagued by substance abuse issues for much of her career, has canceled a series of European appearances after a disastrous kick-off show on Saturday at Belgrade, Serbia’s Forest Fest. Appearing unsteady on her feet and seemingly drunk — after reportedly showing up more than an hour late — Winehouse repeatedly left the stage during the 90-minute performance, seemed to forget the lyrics to many of her songs, dropped the mic, clutched at her stomach and face at points and reached out to hug her bandmates as fans booed the woozy set. To make matters worse, she addressed the disgruntled crowd of 20,000 by saying, “Hello, Athens.” Video of the set shows Winehouse to be glassy-eyed and nervous as catcalls interrupt her erratic vocals during what the local Serbian press described as a “scandal” and a “disaster.” On Sunday, Winehouse canceled planned appearances at festivals in Turkey and Greece. “Despite feeling sure that she wanted to fulfill these commitments, she has agreed with management that she cannot perform to the best of her ability and will return home,” her spokesperson explained in a statement. “She would like to apologize to fans expecting to see her at the shows but feels that this is the right thing to do.” The disastrous show came just weeks after Winehouse entered an alcohol rehab program, according to People, and British reports claimed that alcohol had been banned from the 12-date tour. The singer has reportedly been working on the follow-up to her Grammy-winning 2006 breakthrough, Back to Black, but no release date has been announced for the disc. Related Artists Amy Winehouse

Kimmy Cakes Covers Leading Egyptian Fashion Mag And Recognizes Armenian Genocide

Kimmy Cakes is doing her Armenian heritage proud… The reality star, who graces the cover of Egypt’s leading fashion magazine DIVA this month, is speaking up on behalf of her peoples today by recognizing the Armenian Genocide of 1915. Kim took to her blog to express her seldom voiced political views: My family and I are incredibly proud of our heritage. My dad taught me a lot about Armenian culture, and I have a strong connection with my roots. Every year, I honor the memory of the martyrs who were killed during the 1915 Armenian Genocide. Even though so many countries around the world recognize the Genocide, the government of Turkey still denies it. It happened before Rwanda, Darfur, and the Holocaust. Maybe none of those other genocides would have happened if more nations had condemned the Armenian Genocide, when 1.5 million Armenians were massacred. Some people might wonder why I’m talking about history on my blog. And that’s what I’m trying to show…it’s not history. Until this crime is resolved truthfully and fairly, the Armenian people will live with the pain of what happened to their families and the fear of what might happen again to their homeland. So out of respect for all those innocent people that died, I’m putting a spotlight on it today. Read the rest of my blog post here. Today, thousands of Armenians will come together in Los Angeles to protest against the denial of the genocide and urge the United States government to recognize the Armenian Genocide. I hope that I can bring some attention to this today. And, this year, April 24 falls on Easter Sunday. Armenians are the first Christian Nation in the world, and almost everyone will be in church to celebrate Easter. Even on this really happy day, we’re going to be remembering the Genocide. There’s going to be a National Day of Prayer in churches across America to celebrate Easter and commemorate the Genocide. My thoughts and prayers are with all my fellow Armenians on this really important day. I stand proud with you always. Guess she is trying to let folks know she is more than just some swirl-crazy bird. Source

Kim Kardashian and Cosmo End Turkish Tussle, Join Forces For More Racy Photos

Kim Kardashian is nothing if not forgiving. Putting aside her problems with Cosmopolitan after they splashed her pic on the cover of the Turkish version , which offended the Armenian-American celebrity, Kim is not letting her “amazing relationship” with the magazine end. In fact, she’s doing a brand new shoot for it! Kim was irate at Cosmo for not getting permission to run the controversial cover, which hit newsstands in Turkey this month and hit close to home for her. The country committed genocide against Armenians people nearly 100 years ago and still refuse to acknowledge this. Understandably, she was not a fan. Nevertheless, her team and Cosmo talked stuff out Monday and Kim, who addressed the scandal and why it affected her, decided to bury the hatchet. Hey, why hold a grudge if risk getting less exposure? Kim Kardashian Upset Over Turkish Cosmo Cover, Offends Fellow Armenians

Kim Kardashian is truly taking the world by storm, and becoming a global celebrity brand, so when we hear that she is gracing the cover of this month’s Cosmopolitan Magazine in Turkey, it really is no surprise. However, unfortunately for her being of Armenian descent, this month in Turkey is also the Genocide Remembrance Day, which commemorates the victims of the 1915 Armenian genocide by the Turks, which makes her being chosen as the cover girl a little bit surprising…. and a lot controversial. The Armenian community here in America is offended by the cover, considering that Turkey have never fully acknowledged the genocide which killed millions of Armenians. According to the New York Daily News , Aram Hamparian, who is the the executive director of the Armenian National Committee of America, said that the magazine was; “Trying to turn a profit in Turkey by callously featuring a cover photo of a descendant of Armenian genocide survivors in its April issue…. Cosmopolitan should find creative ways to educate its readers about the Turkish government’s shameful effort to cover up this atrocity” Kim took to her blog trying to soften the controversy, by claiming that she didn’t know Turkey was planning to use her image this month. She wrote; “Cosmopolitan Magazine has a number of international editions all around the world that run in various territories, and when I did this shoot for the international covers I had no idea that Turkey was planning to run my story on their cover THIS month, considering Genocide Remembrance Day is this month… My Armenian heritage means a lot to me and I’ve been brought up to be incredibly proud of my family’s background and culture so as an Armenian-American woman it is a huge honor for me to be on the first ever Armenian Cosmopolitan cover.” Ok, I get that she is all about moving her career forward (and we all know how much she loves to be in front of the camera), but I find it really, really hard to believe that she would do a photo-shoot for any magazine, let alone one as professional and reputable as Cosmopolitan, and not know when the cover was going to run. Really, Kim? But credit where it’s due, being the first ever Armenian cover girl IS a big accomplishment, and I do have to agree with this statement; “World-over, Cosmo is known as a fun and inspiring magazine for women of all races, shapes, sizes, regardless of their political beliefs and I really hope that if I can bring awareness to the issue, then this in an accomplishment.” Well, judging by the publicity her cover has already created, she certainly has managed to do just that! Kim Kardashian Irate Over Turkish Cosmo Cover

Kim Kardashian is reportedly very upset that a photo of her was used on the cover of Turkey’s edition of Cosmopolitan magazine this month. Her objections stem from her Armenian heritage. It is a widely-held belief that Turkey was responsible for acts of genocide against the Armenian people in the early part of the 20th Century. Kim Kardashian , an Armenian-American who has been vocal about the genocide, did an international photo shoot recently that went to various magazines. That included several owned by Cosmopolitan , but she didn’t know it would end up on the Turkish version of the mag, and she’s quite upset about this. Sources say Cosmo let Kim’s people know which international outlets of the magazine would use her picture, but never mentioned Turkey to Kim or her reps. Kim would not have approved the use of her pic in the Turkish version, according to sources close to her, and it’s particularly upsetting this time of year. April 24, which happens to also be Easter Sunday this year, is the day Armenians commemorate the genocide, and comes just weeks after this release.
