Race Matters: New Statistics Show Black Community Most Affected By The GOP Refusing To Fully Implement The Affordable Care Act

Statistics Show Black People Most Affected By Obamacare Rejection The statistics are surfacing in the wake of the recent government shutdown that occurred earlier this week when Congress failed to reach an agreement on implementing The Affordable Care Act, among other things, and it seems that African-Americans will feel it the most if something is not done sooner than later on Capitol Hill. via Think Progress Republicans’ refusal to fully implement the Affordable Care Act will leave more than half of the nation’s uninsured working poor, approximately 8 million people, without access to health insurance, a New York Times analysis of census data finds. The 26 GOP-controlled states not participating in the law’s Medicaid expansion are home to a disproportionate share of low-income Americans who aren’t poor enough to qualify for the existing Medicaid program and make too much to be eligible for subsidies in the ACA’s insurance marketplaces. As a result, hundreds of thousands of cashiers, cooks, nurses’ aides, waiters and waitresses will still struggle to afford coverage. “Blacks are disproportionately affected, largely because more of them are poor and living in Southern states,” the New York Times reports. “In all, 6 out of 10 black [people] live in the states not expanding Medicaid.” Despite the slightly shady nature of these statistics, this is huge problem. What will it take for the GOP to stop allowing millions of Americans to suffer just so they can have their way??? Continue reading

Praise Baby Jesus: The Unemployment Rate Drops To 7.6 Percent With 88,000 Jobs Created In March

Unemployment Rate Drops To Below 8% The Bureau of Labor Statistics has released the latest batch of unemployment numbers and the jobs report, and it seems like things might be finally starting to look up. Think Progress According to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 88,000 jobs were created last month, and the unemployment rate ticked down to 7.6 percent largely because the participation rate dropped. Analysts had expected 190,000 jobs. The private sector added 95,000 jobs, while the public sector contracted again, losing another 7,000 jobs. The February job numbers were revised from 236,000 to 268,000, while January’s numbers were revised from 119,000 to 148,000. Although these actual numbers don’t quite add up to those that were projected, it’s certainly an improvement from where we were last time this year. Shutterstock

Read more:

Last month, L.A. Reid announced his departure as chairman of Island Def Jam Records to secure a judging gig for the U.S. edition of Simon Cowell’s reality singing competition ‘The X Factor,’ which is scheduled to premiere in September. Maybe the letters from Nas and Shyne finally got to him but Reid will now be searching for new talent instead of managing the demands of current acts. The BoomBox.com caught up with Reid to find out why he left behind a gig behind a desk to wade through scores of wannabees looking for their big break. Why did you decide to leave Def Jam to join ‘The X Factor’? L.A. Reid: Well, I decided to do ‘The X Factor’ largely because of Simon Cowell and my admiration for Simon and how he’s developed this show, how he’s developed this format of music television, and how he’s developed his own career. I really admire Simon. When he called me it was a no-brainer because I admire him that much. And the second reason was I love artists and I love music. I love the excitement of entertainment and I love ‘The X Factor’ as a platform to discover the next generation of superstar talent. READ THE FULL INTERVIEW @ TVSQUAD.COM RELATED ARTICLES: L.A. Meat Made Us Smarter

…and learning how to cook it made us human Sorry, vegetarians: Humans have meat to thank for the evolutionary changes that made us the large-brained tool-users we are today. Some 2.3 million years ago, our ancestors made the jump from gnawing all day on leaves and nuts to scavenging carcasses. This, anthropologists say, was the magic moment when our brains got enough energy to start growing to their current size—largely because we no longer had to maintain a giant gut capable of processing all those raw leaves. From there came the invention of tools—”external teeth” that meant we didn't need big sharp teeth like other predators—and fire for cooking, which made meat easier to digest and squeeze nutrition from, meaning we no longer had to spend hours a day chewing like chimps do. Cooking also taught us to share labor and brought people together for conversation in the evening, making us even more human http://www.newser.com/story/97008/meat-made-us-smarter.html added by: unimatrix0

Natural Gas Use to Double in US in Coming Decades: MIT Report

photo: citylovesyou_ffm via flickr After two years of study, researchers from MIT have forecast natural gas use in the United States doubling in the coming decades, increasing energy market share to 40%. That increase comes largely because natural gas eventually replaces more coal in electricity generation thanks to future carbon emissions reduction policy. … Read the full story on TreeHugger
