Mumford & Sons Disses Jay Z, Other Artists: What Did They Say?!?

Mumford & Sons are not thrilled with music service Tidal and the artists who’ve signed on with them. They offered up a strong opinion regarding Tidal’s subscription based music streaming service .  In an interview with The Daily Beast, the UK folk band didn’t hold back when Tidal came up in the conversation. Interviewer Marlow Stern described how the subject of Tidal was “greeted by a series of loud fart sounds.” The music streaming service, costing $9.99-$19.99, has the involvement of many high profile musical figures, including Jay Z, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Madonna, Jason Aldean, Alicia Keys, Jack White, Daft Punk, and Kanye West.  Marcus Mumford explained the group’s disdain for Tidal: “We wouldn’t have joined it anyway, even if they had asked. We don’t want to be tribal. I think smaller bands should get paid more for it, too. Bigger bands have other ways of making money, so I don’t think you can complain. A band of our size shouldn’t be complaining. And when they say it’s artist-owned, it’s owned by those rich, wealthy artists.” Mumford & Sons guitarist Winston Marshall was a bit more direct with his words calling the artists involved “new school fucking plutocrats.” He also wanted to be clear that although they don’t like Tidal, they aren’t taking the same stance as Taylor Swift took against Spotify : “We don’t want to be part of some Tidal ‘streaming revolution’ nor do we want to be Taylor Swift and be anti-it.” “I don’t understand her argument, either. The focus is slightly missed. Music is changing. It’s fucking changing. This is how people are going to listen to music now – streaming. So diversify as a band. It doesn’t mean selling your songs to adverts. We look at our albums as stand-alone pieces of art, and also as adverts for our live shows.” Mumford chimed in again, saying:  “What I’m not into is the tribalistic aspect of it – people trying to corner bits of the market, and put their face on it. That’s just commercial bullshit. We hire people to do that for us rather than having to do that ourselves. We just want to play music, and I don’t want to align myself with Spotify, Beats, Tidal, or whatever. “We want people to listen to our music in their most comfortable way, and if they’re not up for paying for it, I don’t really care.” View Slideshow: 21 Celebrity Feuds We Never Saw Coming

Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe Talk ‘Big Easy Express’ Documentary

Film captures bands’ 2011 Railroad Revival Tour of the Southwest. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Chris Kim Marcus Mumford Photo: Gus Stewart/ Getty Images Last year, Mumford & Sons , Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show joined forces for the Railroad Revival Tour, a trek that took them through the American Southwest on a journey that was nearly as long as the names of the band names involved. Director Emmett Malloy rode along with them, capturing each show and every magical moment aboard the rails … and now, he’s brought it all together in a brand-new documentary, “Big Easy Express,” which premiered during the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. And at the premiere, MTV News caught up with three of the stars — Mumford’s Ben Lovett, Edward Sharpe’s Alex Ebert and Old Crow’s Gill Landry — to talk about making the film, which, from the sound of things, wasn’t really much work at all. “We weren’t trying to make some ‘great film’ or anything. It didn’t feel like that, we were just enjoying this experience that was laid out, and doing gigs and traveling in a bizarre way between the two,” Landry said. “And the great thing about Emmett, and this documentary, was that it didn’t invade any of that, it didn’t feel forced or staged. So, no, we weren’t scrubbing up on our documentary history beforehand.” “It was like the biggest party you’ve ever been to,” Landry laughed. “It lasted for a week, and you just couldn’t afford to throw another one afterwards.” Though you get the feeling everyone involved would’ve liked to try, because just hearing the three reminisce on the tour, you can tell that it was one they’ll remember for a long time. Not just for the musical moments, but for everything that happened between the shows too. “It was about the joy of music, the joy of camaraderie,” Landry said. “We’re each, individually, quite different bands, we don’t play the same music, we come from different places — England, Los Angeles, Nashville — but we all came together and just played … played our hearts out. It was really amazing.” “It came at quite an interesting time. We’ve all gone on to making records pretty soon after the tour,” Ebert said. “So, I think it’s impossible to deny the influence both of the spirit and the music that we had on that trip … something happened.” And to that end, even though there’s still no theatrical premiere for “Big Easy Express” (a publicist told MTV News it’ll hit theaters nationally later this year), all three bands are beginning to make plans for a sequel … to the tour, at least. “I think twinkling in the back of everyone’s mind is maybe doing something again,” Sharpe said. “We’ve talked about weird ways to top that or have a different experience … a zeppelin or a riverboat … I think a zeppelin’s more realistic.” Related Artists Mumford & Sons

Justin Timberlake Is ‘Perfect’ In Coen Brothers Flick

‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ actor Oscar Isaac has been recording music with Timberlake for the ’60s folk flick. By Jocelyn Vena “W.E.” star Oscar Isaac is deep in musical preparations for the next Coen Brothers film, “Inside Llewyn Davis,” in which he’ll play the title character. In a couple weeks, Isaac and his castmates, including Justin Timberlake , Carey Mulligan and Garrett Hedlund, will be on set, but until then they are in the recording studio putting the finishing touches on the film’s musical elements. “Right now I’m gearing up for the Coen Brothers film, which is all music based,” he told MTV News at the New York premiere of the Madonna-directed “W.E.” “So that’s actually taking up a lot of the musical creative energy. So excited.” Isaac, much like his co-stars, has dabbled in music, having put off recording his own music to focus on the film. And with some assistance from some big-name musical heavyweights, the music is destined to shine. The actor said the cast is currently in the studio with Timberlake, the Punch Brothers, T-Bone Burnett and Mulligan’s fianc

Mumford & Sons’ New Songs Get ‘New Life’ On Tour

‘Ghosts’ is one song being road-tested for Sigh No More follow-up. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Mumford and Sons Photo: MTV News Mumford & Sons recently told MTV News that they’re “still recording” the follow-up to their breakthrough Sigh No More album, which, while certainly understandable (given their schedule), is also rather unbelievable — especially since they’ve been working on the new spate of songs almost as long as they’ve been on tour. “Most of them, we’re letting people hear as we’ve played live shows. We’ve kind of always just done that,” frontman Marcus Mumford explained. “We’ve kind of written a song and felt like we get it up to a point where it’s ready to play live, and then we go … and road test it, see how it goes. For us, we find that’s a really helpful way of writing, and performing the song ideas that we have live is a crucial part, for us, of the songwriting process.” And that’s especially true of “Ghosts,” a new song the band officially unveiled last month during a Philadelphia radio station appearance. Though they’ve been working it into their live sets, the tune only took on its current — and, apparently, finished — form after performing it to audiences and tinkering with it afterward. “It’s probably the newest one we’ve been playing live, actually; that one came together really on our Canadian tour about a month ago, the first time started playing it,” multi-instrumentalist Winston Marshall said. “We tried recording it before, but it then took on a new life when we played it on that tour. … [The songs] always change when we play them live; the dynamics change a lot. When you play it to a new room, you’re playing it to new ears, and you’re listening to the song through their ears. So it’s really great to feel the song out.” And though it’s a new addition to their set, Mumford already count “Ghosts” among their favorites — if only for the fact that it actually gives them a chance to catch their collective breath. “It’s fun to play … it’s a kind of respite for us to just stand back and play a slower song,” Mumford said with a laugh. “It’s nice: gives us a moment to take stock.” Have you heard Mumford & Sons’ new songs live? Mumford & Sons Reveal 2011 Artists Of The Year Picks

As MTV reveals our picks for 2011’s best artists, we ask breakout stars Mumford & Sons to weigh in on their favorites. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Mumford & Sons’ Marcus Mumford Photo: MTV News Mumford & Sons may have stumbled onto Stateside success in 2010 with their debut disc, Sigh No More, but in 2011, they not only grew comfortable with their newfound fame , they ran with it. Sigh was the year’s best-selling rock album (by a mile), and they nabbed four Grammy nominations — including Record and Song of the Year — for their song “The Cave.” So, as 2011 draws to a close, and as MTV reveals our picks for the Artists of the Year , we’re reaching out to a host of acts who not only dominated the past 12 months, but came to define them, for their takes on the year in music. And who better to ask than Mumford, a band that began 2010 as relative unknowns but wrap up 2011 as one of the biggest rock acts in the U.S. … with a hotly anticipated new album due in 2012. We spoke to Marcus Mumford and Ben Lovett about their favorite artists of the year, and in keeping with their breakout status, they chose a thoroughly under-the-radar act … and a rapper who busted through to the big time in 2011. Of course, they could only pronounce one of their picks’ names correctly. “Dawes are a really important band for us,” Mumford said. “You would say ‘Dawes,’ because you can differentiate between ‘Dawes’ and ‘Doors’ — more like ‘Pawn’ and ‘Porn’ — where we can’t, it’s just ‘Porn’ and ‘Porn’ to us, so you never know which one we’re talking about.” “I’ve watched the video for Tyler, the Creator’s ‘Yonkers’ 50 times this year,” Lovett added. “It’s f—ing amazing. Brilliant video.” They didn’t just stop there. They’ve already picked their favorite act of 2012 too, an up-and-coming Harlem rapper who they expect big things from next year. “I just heard an incredible song by Azealia Banks called ‘212,’ ” Lovett said. “[It’s] mind-blowing.” All this week, watch “AMTV” on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists. Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford dating

“They were kissing and cuddling in public,” an onlooker from the night tells us. “They were clearly very fond of each other. They were very, very affectionate to one another.” Carey Mulligan, who otherwise kept a low profile at the show, “was very quiet and just kind of sat behind the scenes,” says the onlooker.
