Dueling Montages: Was 2010 Better for Films or Viral Videos?

Year-end lists are great ! But as we’ve learned in the past few years, they aren’t enough for this tech-savy age. No, we need end of year video montages too. Extremely comprehensive end-of-year-montages. Well, two particularly well-edited ones have just popped up; one counting down the top 100 viral videos of the year and one just paying homage to the avalanche of movies, good and bad, that crashed down on us during 2010. So join me for a trip down memory lane and try to decide whether the year’s best entertainment was delivered in a movie theater or on cell phones and laptops.

Weekend Receipts: Shrek the Third

Not once in 2009 did a movie lead the box office for three or more straight weeks. Here in 2010, though, that trick has been turned by Avatar , Alice in Wonderland and now Shrek Forever After — the animated sequel easily held off newcomers Get Him to the Greek and Killers to retain the top spot for a third straight week. And while other new releases Marmaduke and Splice failed to crack the top-ten, the biggest loser of the weekend was — once again — MacGruber : The comedy shed over 2,300 screens and dropped 93.9 percent in its third week. Yikes squared. Say a prayer for Will Forte and click ahead for some weekend receipts.

Friday Box Office: Forever and Ever

Stop me if this sounds familiar: Thanks to some lesser-than-expected dollars from the new releases, Shrek Forever After remained in first place on Friday night and should wind up easily winning the weekend — the Dreamworks hit pulled down $7 million to pace one of the weakest summer fields in recent memory. How weak? Runner up Get Him to the Greek grabbed just $6 million and that was still as much as other new releases Marmaduke ($3.5 million in 6th) and Splice ($2.5 million in 8th) combined . Meanwhile, Katherine Heigl haters rejoice: Killers landed in third with $5.7 million. Imagine how much better it could have done with “The” in the title! The top-five after the jump.

REVIEW: Marmaduke Slobbers its Way to Kid-Flick Mediocrity

The big-screen comic adaptation no one was waiting for, Marmaduke has arrived, and all the questions you never had are answered at last: Is Marmaduke still a hilariously big dog? Who exasperates his owners? Will live-action technology be used to render his flatulence in real time? Does he try on bikinis and say “Ack ack ack!”? A creaky comic strip whose mediocrity has become a brand interchangeable with that of fellow syndicate mainstays Family Circus and Cathy , Marmaduke was inexplicably chosen to drive a feature vehicle; at least Garfield had the “talking cat” thing going on. Ah, but lo: Marmaduke speaks! And when that giant, slobbering pup turns to the camera, jowls digitally jiggling, and Owen Wilson’s wobbly voice comes out, that final unasked question is put to bed: Will your worst fears be realized? Yes. Yes they will.
