30 Seconds To Mars, My Chemical Romance Roll On To Musical March Madness Sweet 16

Linkin Park, Panic! at the Disco also advance, along with underdogs Disturbed and Sum 41 … Sweet 16 voting now open on the Newsroom blog. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way Photo: David Wolff – Patrick/ WireImage Two weeks ago, when we tipped off the 2011 Musical March Madness tournament, sixty-four bands entered the fray with championship dreams on their minds. For 32 of those bands, that dream died after one round. And for half of the remaining 32, the dream is over today. Because we’ve reached the Sweet 16, the midway point on the quest for the 2011 MMM title. And while the bands still left standing would no doubt like a moment to recover from their epic battles, as any tournament vet will tell you, there’s no rest for the weary. From here on out, the challenges only get tougher, and the cost of defeat is high: To come so close and leave empty-handed would be a heartbreaker, indeed.

Foo Fighters, Helen Mirren Set For ‘Saturday Night Live’

Elton John also will host ‘SNL’ for the first time in April. By Gil Kaufman Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage It’s hard to think of anyone who could offer advice to someone as critically acclaimed and rewarded as British acting icon Dame Helen Mirren. She is, after all, halfway to her EGOT (winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award), but when the Oscar-winning star of “The Queen” takes the stage for the first time April 9 as the host of “Saturday Night Live,” she’ll have some help from a group of “SNL” veterans. She’ll be joined by six-time musical guests the Foo Fighters , who will be promoting their upcoming album, Wasting Light , which hits stores just a few days later. The Foos are still riding high and in the running of MTV’s Musical March Madness , trying to retain their #1 ranking as they face off against Disturbed in the second round. Vote for your favorite bands now over on the Newsroom blog. Mirren will be promoting her upcoming remake of “Arthur,” which stars Russell Brand as the title character memorably portrayed as a shambling, careless drunk by the late Dudley Moore in the 1981 version. She won’t be the only Oscar winner to grace the “SNL” stage next month either: Fellow British entertainment royalty Sir Elton John will both perform and host the show on April 2, marking his first musical visit to “SNL” since 1982. John will be joined by his musical pal and creative partner Leon Russell, and the pair are expected to highlight cuts from their acclaimed joint album, The Union . John inducted Russell into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last week, and both artists have been enjoying a bit of a musical renaissance thanks to the album. Patrick Stump Conflicted By Rise Against Matchup In Musical March Madness

The friends are going head-to-head in the second round of the MTV tournament, right now on the Newsroom blog. By James Montgomery Patrick Stump Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage On Monday, when we revealed the second-round matchups in our Musical March Madness tournament , few clashes stood out quite like the #4 Rise Against / #12 Patrick Stump tilt in the Midwest Region. After all, this is a battle between friends. Both acts hail from Chicago, both have come up together (RA frontman Tim McIlrath was actually in a band with Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz back in the day), and both share a respect for the other. So, it’s nothing short of cruel that there can be only one winner.

Linkin Park? U2? Ke$ha? Behind MTV’s Musical March Madness Selection

With the tipoff of our tournament set for Monday, Bigger Than the Sound breaks down your favorite band’s chances of busting the bracket. By James Montgomery Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington Photo: Frank Hoensch/ Getty Images Last year, when we launched the inaugural Musical March Madness tournament, we did it largely on a whim. As I wrote when I revealed my original (handwritten) bracket , the basic idea was to combine my love of college basketball, gambling and rock music (and superfluous lists) into one magical event, and it really didn’t matter that I hadn’t figured out how bands would advance in the tournament or even what they’d get for winning. All I knew was that it seemed like a fun idea (especially since I didn’t have anything else to write my column about that week) and that somewhere, there had to be someone who cared about these seemingly disparate things nearly as much as I did. As it turned out, there were a lot of people who cared, and when it was all said and done — thanks to the efforts of a whole lot of folks, including Newsroom blog editor Kyle Anderson, who basically decided “You know what? People should vote on this!” — not only was Musical March Madness a certified success, but we somehow even managed to get an actual trophy to present to the winners, Coheed and Cambria , too. So, really, everybody won. Of course, given the success of the original MMM, attention quickly shifted to the 2011 tournament. Last year, I basically just threw together a list of 64 bands (65, actually; who could forget the epic Against Me!/ Creed play-in battle?). For the 2011 tournament, however, I did research, monitored album sales and basically became a Selection Committee of one. And, yes, it took way longer than I ever could have imagined. So, with the 2011 Musical March Madness set to tip off Monday — when we reveal our full bracket of 64 bands and launch voting in first-round matchups — I decided to pull back the curtain on that selection process. Some teams have all but locked up their spots in the 2011 tournament, while others still have some work to do. In the spirit of all things bracketological, here’s my up-to-the-minute look at where your favorite bands stand for this year’s MMM: The #1 Seeds The biggest bands in the land. Last year, I gave out #1’s to Nickelback, Coldplay, Blink-182 and the Kings of Leon. Somewhat surprisingly, three-quarters of them ended up losing in the opening round of the tournament (only Blink survived, making it to the round of 32 before losing to 30 Seconds to Mars). Obviously, I overestimated the popularity of some of those acts, which means that, in 2011, to be a #1 seed, you have to have proven yourself as not only a rock-solid commodity, but an actual threat to win the championship too. Oh, and it wouldn’t hurt to have an album either in stores or coming soon. So here are my latest contenders for top seeds:

Adele Has ‘Trained Hard’ For MTV’s Musical March Madness

Our 2011 tournament begins March 14, but Adele is ready to go — even if she doesn’t like sports. By James Montgomery Adele Photo: Jon Furniss/Getty Images Last year, when the selection committee was assembling the field of bands for our inaugural Musical March Madness tournament, British belter Adele was left out — an omission that, at the time, seemed somewhat forgivable, considering she was basically off the grid, holed up in Malibu to begin work on the songs that would shape her chart-topping 21 album . Of course, this year, it would be close to blasphemy not to include Adele in the field of 64 acts that will compete for the MMM trophy . Not only has she conquered the world with 21, but she worked with Rick Rubin on the record, and that dude most certainly rocks, which makes her a shoo-in for the 2011 tourney. But, as we learned Monday, Adele will face a tough road to the championship. Rock titans Linkin Park have already promised to bring “total dominance” to the 2011 MMM tournament — we’ll unveil our entire championship bracket Monday, March 14 — and, as it turns out, Adele doesn’t seem to know the first thing about college basketball, which is where this entire idea came from in the first place. “I don’t like sports!” she laughed. Still, she’s willing to give it a try. So we asked her: Just how has she been preparing to take down the likes of Linkin Park in the 2011 Musical March Madness tourney? “I’ve trained really hard,” she explained. “I’ve worked really hard this whole season, leading up to the release of this record.” Of course, she followed that boast up with an uncontrollable fit of laughter, but it bears mention that, with an armload of Grammys , a #1 album and fervent fanbase on both sides of the Atlantic, Adele definitely has a shot at shocking the world this year, especially since fans determine all the winners in our tournament. And, really, if she does manage to come out on top, can you imagine what her acceptance speech would be like? MTV’s 2011 Musical March Madness Tournament begins Monday, March 14, when we reveal the full field of 64 bands that will battle for the championship. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM … but get ready, it’s gonna be a war. Related Videos MTV’s Musical March Madness Is Back For 2011

Nicole Scherzinger Brings ‘Slapstick’ To ‘Dancing With The Stars’

‘We’re taking it old school,’ she says of performance plans with partner Derek Hough. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Nicole Scherzinger at her “Dancing with the Stars” rehearsal on Friday Photo: MTV News Last week Nicole Scherzinger scored the highest of all the celebrity dancers on “Dancing With the Stars,” receiving a near-perfect total of 28. When the fans voiced their opinion, it was Shannen Doherty who was voted off the show , leaving Scherzinger to dance another week. So what should fans expect to see when they tune in this week? “We had the quick step. We decided to take a risk and do something that we wanted to do on our own,” Scherzinger told MTV News recently about her partner’s strategy. “We’re not really playing by the rules necessarily.” Scherzinger and dance partner Derek Hough plan to try out some more unconventional dance moves with a routine that will be anything but strictly ballroom. “We’re taking it old school. We’re going back to the basics of, like, sheer entertainment and being performers, kind of like slapstick comedy,” she shared. “And [we’re] just having a good time. I don’t know if the judges are gonna necessarily like it so much. We’ll see.” The Pussycat Doll is used to all the hard work thanks to her strenuous pop-star schedule, but her “DWTS” routines are definitely the hardest thing she’s had to do in a long while. “I didn’t anticipate, honestly, that it was going to be so challenging,” she said. “I’m used to hard work, being on tour with the Pussycat Dolls and going non-stop, but this style of dance is so foreign to my body. It’s quite frustrating at times.” Are you looking forward to seeing Nicole and Derek perform again on “Dancing With the Stars”? Tell us in the comments below! Cobra Starship Recap MTV’s Musical March Madness Tournament

Who will win the championship: My Chemical Romance or Coheed and Cambria? By James Montgomery Cobra Starship’s Alex Suarez and Ryland Blackinton Photo: MTV News You could call MTV’s Musical March Madness many things (and, in light of Tokio Hotel’s Final Four ousting, their fans already are), but “predictable” is not one of them. This was, after all, a tournament determined entirely by your votes, which meant that, really, anything was possible — a fact we quickly realized when three of the four #1 seeds lost in the opening round (and the fourth lost in the second ). It was a tournament defined by upsets and run by underdogs, be they the Hold Steady or Panic! at the Disco, Patrick Stump or Alice in Chains — or, most notably, Tokio and Coheed and Cambria, two bands who were basically tossed into the tournament at the last minute and made it to the Final Four. In Coheed’s case, they made it all the way to the championship game, where they’ll face off against My Chemical Romance — you know, a band that hasn’t released a new album in, like, four years and is currently without a drummer . Basically, this whole thing made absolutely zero sense. Watching it unfold was a total blast, but attempting to recap the whole thing has seemed nearly impossible. That’s why we turned to a pair of sportscasting legends who know a thing or two about pulling off the impossible — CSPN analysts Dick Bagwell and Vincent Twice — to do the recapping for us. (And yes, we’re aware they look very much like Cobra Starship ‘s Ryland Blackinton and Alex Suarez; we’ll just chalk that up to a coincidence.) With Newsroom blog, we figured now would be a pretty good time to roll out Bagwell and Twice’s tournament recap. Watch it while you vote. Perhaps it will help sway you one way or the other (that Dick is a persuasive guy — trust us). We’ll crown our Musical March Madness champion on Wednesday. Who are you pulling for in the championship game: My Chemical Romance or Coheed and Cambria? Let us know in the comments below! And make your vote count by hitting the Newsroom blog . Green Day Say New Album Is ‘Back To The Basics’

‘We’ve got to start translating the songs and explaining the songs,’ Billie Joe Armstrong tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sway Calloway Green Day Photo: MTV News In the new issue of Kerrang! magazine, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong got fans salivating when he let it slip that the band was already working on songs for the follow-up to 2009’s 21st Century Breakdown. “We did some demos in Berlin, some in Stockholm, some just outside of Glasgow and some in Amsterdam,” Armstrong told the magazine. “We wanted to get [the songs] down in some early form.” From the sound of things, GD were looking to get something out sooner rather than later, a far cry from the two-plus years they spent working on Breakdown. And, naturally, we were excited by the news. So when we spoke to the guys at the Broadway premiere of their “American Idiot” musical , we asked them about the status of the new album — which, as they put it, is shaping up to be a “back-to-basics” sort of affair. “It’s just been songwriting right now. Instead of doing it later on, we decided to start doing stuff now. … It’s all back to the basics again. Just getting in a room together and start jamming,” Armstrong said. “We set up all of our old gear, which was like an experiment. We set up all of our equipment from 1992, and we sat in a room. We got in, and I was like, ‘Come on, guys, we’re getting back in!’ and I [start playing] and go, ‘This sounds like sh–!’ Everything sounded so bad.” “Me and [drummer] Tre [Cool] were looking at Billie going, ‘Really, you’ve got to pull out that POS amp?’ ” bassist Mike Dirnt laughed. “I mean, it really sounded like crap.” So maybe the new Green Day album won’t be a return to their punk past. Or perhaps it will. As Armstrong pointed out, the finished album is still a ways off, and it’s too early to see how it’s going to turn out. “It’s still really early,” he laughed. “We’ve got to start translating the songs and explaining the songs, and the next step will be arguing about the songs.” Are you excited for new music from Green Day?
