‘Dark Knight Rises’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

New trailer hints that all is not well in Gotham City eight years after ‘The Dark Knight.’ By Kevin P. Sullivan Tom Hardy as Bane in the new “Dark Knight Rises” trailer Photo: Warner Bros. Some lucky Batman fans got a chance to check out the brand-new trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises” over the weekend, and now Apple has the first theatrical trailer for the entire world to see. The new preview gives us our best look yet at Gotham City eight years after the end of “The Dark Knight,” and things aren’t going very well. Gordon’s tenure as commissioner may be coming to an end. Selina Kyle warns Bruce of a storm on the horizon, and Bane shows a complete disregard for football field maintenance. Here are the five key scenes from the brand-new “Dark Knight Rises” trailer. Old Man Wayne While you may have watched the bootleg of the trailer a dozen times online over the weekend, a lot of the trailer’s details didn’t translate from the pirated copy. The most intriguing detail has to be the reflection in the dish cover. It clearly shows Bruce Wayne walking toward it with a cane. Spy footage from the set hinted that an injured Wayne would have a cane, but this is the first concrete proof. Is this Bane’s work, and how badly is Wayne hurt? This could be the end of Batman that’s hinted at in the trailer. Where in the World Is Bruce Wayne? The scene from the trailer that remains largely a mystery is the one where Wayne enters the hall of staircases and asks what the chanting means. We haven’t seen anything like this setting in the series yet, but Wayne’s clothes resemble the clothes he wears in the early scenes of “Batman Begins,” during his stint in the League of Shadows. We’ve all heard that the final film in Christopher Nolan ‘s trilogy will double-back and cover some territory from the first film. Is this our first look at the return of the League of Shadows? Are You Ready for Some Foootbaaa … OH SH–! Clearly the scene everyone will be talking about, in the football stadium, Nolan tries his hand at making a disaster movie. Nothing in the series so far compares to the earthquake in the stadium in terms of destruction. Bane succeeds where other villains haven’t, and this more or less confirms the presence of the much-discussed earthquake machine. While many had their doubts, no one can deny that Nolan handles an otherwise outlandish concept with a deft and cool hand. Now imagine that in IMAX! Oh Hey, It’s Tali, I Mean, Miranda Tate There she is, the most mysterious of the new characters, Miranda Tate. When Marion Cotillard signed on to re-team with Nolan, people cried foul. The press release may have said Miranda Tate, dutiful Wayne Enterprises employee, but hard-core fans smelled a red herring. This is the first time we’re actually seeing Cotillard, but the trailer doesn’t offer much. Who is Miranda Tate? It’s clear we’ll have to wait to find out. Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-BAT-WING Photos from the set gave us glimpses at Batman’s new aerial ride, the Batwing, but seeing it in action is a whole other monster. I can’t even begin to wrap my head around what that scene is going to be like. We know that several tumblers are involved. Bane is there, and at some point, Batman unleashes the Batwing on everyone. Even though fans knew about the Batpod before “The Dark Knight” hit theaters, its reveal ranked among the film’s best moments. Expect the same treatment for the Batwing. ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Prologue ‘Will Have Your Jaw Drop’

Lucky fans who screened six-minute preview in NYC tell MTV News they love the action but can’t understand what Bane is saying. By Kevin P. Sullivan Christian Bale in “The Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Jared Wickerham/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Fans came out in droves Wednesday for a chance to take an early look at the first six minutes of Christopher Nolan ‘s final Batman film, “The Dark Knight Rises.” The prologue screened as a part of a viral marketing campaign, which involved fans reading through “leaked” CIA documents and finding coordinates for cities around the world. When all the pieces fell into place, a secret website, OperationEarlyBird.com, revealed the locations and times for prologue screenings. A line formed early outside the AMC Loews Lincoln 13 on the Upper West Side, and the excitement was palpable. The anticipation only grew as fans filed into the IMAX theater to await the six-minute preview. Once the preview ended, the crowd applauded and demanded a second viewing, to no avail. Outside the theater, the most common reaction to the footage was jubilation, but some fans expressed reservations about Tom Hardy ‘s voice as Bane . “I thought it was really good,” Tom Dichiara told MTV News. “It was a lot of action, good opening sequence. You can’t really understand a whole lot of what Bane says, though.” “The action was crazy,” Brian Sansone said. “They did sh– in ‘The Dark Knight’ that I had never seen before, and they blew me away again. A lot more action-packed, just as intricate, just as crazy. If the rest of the movie is like that, they got my money.” “I loved it. Christopher Nolan just did an ingenious scene, a great action scene, something that will have your jaw drop. It was pretty amazing just watching it on the screen, saying, ‘I never thought that would be possible,’ ” said Tyler Rice, who liked Bane’s voice but struggled to understand it as well. “Bane’s voice sounded awesome, but you can’t understand what he’s saying. He had about two clear lines you can hear what he’s saying. Otherwise, it just sounded like awesome gibberish. It kind of sounds like Buffalo Bill [from ‘Silence of the Lambs’].” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Dark Knight Rises.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .

Christopher Nolan Unveils ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Prologue

A lucky audience got a glimpse at director’s nearly seven-minute clip, in which Bane proves as fearsome as Batman fans have hoped. By Kara Warner “The Dark Knight Rises” movie poster Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures LOS ANGELES — If you happened to be in or around the IMAX theater at Universal City Walk Thursday night, there’s a decent chance you may have been privy to the collective fangasm (some shock and awe) generated by the lucky audience invited to screen the prologue for Christopher Nolan’s third Batman movie, “The Dark Knight Rises.” Nolan was on hand himself to introduce the nearly seven-minute clip, which he described as, basically, the opening sequence, with a few out-of-order bonus shots thrown in at the end. The director also emphasized his love for IMAX technology, explaining that even though it was probably developed before he was born, it is “far and away the best imaging format created,” and it’s one that allows fans to experience the grandeur of old Hollywood films, which Nolan said is “slowly being chipped away.” At the special screening, he encouraged fans to seek out official IMAX screens for a fully immersive experience when “Rises” opens next summer, but not to inquire about the plot of the film. “I’ve barely started to edit, so don’t ask me about the ending,” he joked just before the lights in the theater dimmed. In the interest of preserving the mystery of the movie, Warner Bros. politely asked journalists in attendance to refrain from giving blow-by-blow reactions, a request MTV News is happy to heed. What we can say is that the action in the opening sequence occurs mostly on a plane and that it features several high-flying, mind-blowing special effects of the practical, not the CG, variety. The sequence seems to pick up right where “The Dark Knight” leaves off — Gotham District Attorney Harvey Dent’s funeral — and, most important, features one of the more memorable character introductions we’ve seen of late as viewers got the first look at Tom Hardy in action as Bane, complete with creepy leather face mask. There are government agents, military personnel and civilians involved in the setup, but it’s all eyes on Bane. And if what we see him say and do in the first few minutes is representative of his villainous arc in the full-length feature, it’s clear that Nolan is venturing into more ominous territory in “Rises.” Where Heath Ledger’s unforgettable Joker was dark, twisted and almost whimsically crazy, Hardy’s Bane is a horrific, maniacal force. That’s apparent whenever the camera locks onto his eyes or when he speaks for the first time, revealing a garbled, aggressive German accent. Bane will no doubt prove a formidable force to be reckoned with, and we can’t help but anticipate his first meeting with Batman. Speaking of Batman, the caped crusader, played of course by Christian Bale, makes his first appearance in a few quick clips at the very end, along with new additions Catwoman/Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) and cop John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). Evelyn Lozada: Returning to Basketball Wives, Signed to Chad Ochocinco Wedding Spinoff

Basketball Wives star Evelyn Lozada has been convinced to come back for another season. She’s so darn valuable, she was given an insane deal she couldn’t pass up. Evelyn was prepared to leave the VH1 “hit” before its fourth season, but she was given a package that allows her to work less, earn more, and get her own spinoff. Even a Basketball Wives cast member isn’t dumb enough to reject that. Earlier this fall, Evelyn had made up her mind that she was done with the show after a VH1 blog post suggested she cheated on her fiance, NFL star Chad Ochocinco. ( Cheated with Terrell Owens , to be exact). However, once Evelyn Lozada let producers know she was out, they really made a push to keep her. Guess you gotta go all out to keep your prized “talent” in house. Her new deal requires her to film half as often, with the flexibility to work around her daughter’s school schedule and Chad’s NFL games, all while getting a big raise. The icing on the cake? The network promised to spin off Evelyn and Chad into their own show, documenting the months leading up to their wedding. Hallelujah.

Christian Bale Completes "End of the Batman Era"

Filming on The Dark Knight Rises has come to an end and, with it, so has the portrayal of this iconic super hero by Christian Bale. “I wrapped a few days ago so that will be the last time I’m taking that [Batman hood] off,” the actor star told the Philippine Daily Inquirer this week. “I believe that the whole production wrapped yesterday, so it’s all done. Everything’s finished. It’s me and [director Christopher Nolan] – that will be the end of that Batman era.” The Dark Knight Rises Trailer Bale and Nolan first teamed up in 2005 on Batman Begins , a critically-acclaimed installment of the franchise that earned $372 million across the globe. The Dark Knight then broke the $1 billion barrier and earned Heath Ledger a posthumous Oscar. The Dark Knight Rises , meanwhile, hits theaters on July 20, 2012 and also stars Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman. We have a feeling it will do rather well at the box office.

‘The Dark Knight Rises’: Spoiling The Spoilers

How knowing everything about everything is ruining everything, in this week’s The Weekly Rising. By Kevin P. Sullivan Christian Bale and Tom Hardy on the set of “Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Getty Images Guys, I think we’re doing it wrong. We have eight months until the July 20, 2012, release date of “The Dark Knight Rises,” and none of this feels right. I mean, yeah, a new Christopher Nolan -directed Batman movie is coming out this summer. Yeah, it’s great that he’s picked up some of his “Inception” alums to join the cast. And granted, what we’ve seen from the set does look pretty cool. (Just whose panties is Matthew Modine holding?!?!) That’s all well and good, but do you ever get the feeling something is missing? Think back to the lead-up to the release of “The Dark Knight” back in 2007 and 2008. If you were one of the 10 million people who participated in the “Why So Serious?” and “I Believe in Harvey Dent” marketing campaigns, I’m sure you vividly remember what you were doing. That’s because you were most likely running around to bakeries and digging through cakes for hidden cell phones or opening lockers in bowling alleys to look for more clues. At the very least, you followed along at home and watched as people from around the world cooperated just for the chance to get your first glimpse at Heath Ledger ‘s take on the Joker or a vandalized version of the first trailer. When the film finally arrived in theaters, it wasn’t just another movie. It was something bigger. “The Dark Knight” became a phenomenon and an experience that you had a part in. The immersive, alternate reality game that led up to the release of “The Dark Knight” was all the work of one company, 42 Entertainment. The reason we haven’t had a similar campaign for “The Dark Knight Rises” is because 42 Entertainment is in no way involved with the project. In the company’s absence, a new viral campaign in the vein of “Why So Serious?” exists, but it is nowhere near “Why So Serious?” in terms of quality and quantity. “The Fire Rises” began as a chant on the film’s official website back on May 20. Fans eventually figured out that the visual spectrum of the noise pointed to a Twitter hashtag, #TheFireRises. For each subsequent re-tweet of the tag, Warner Bros. revealed another pixel of what ended up being the first photo of Tom Hardy as Bane . An impressive and intricate start for the campaign that looked to follow in 42 Entertainment’s footsteps, but the clues soon stopped. The Twitter account lay idle until last week, when it told followers to add their voice to Hans Zimmer’s score via UJAM, several days after that news originally broke. But even removing the added layer of complexity that comes with an alternate reality game or a simple viral marketing campaign isn’t enough to explain the bungled anticipation for “The Dark Knight Rises.” Instead of simply looking forward to a film without having any elaborate task to complete, which is how fans of all other films spend their pre-releases, those who follow “The Dark Knight Rises” have been subjected to a deluge of spy photos and videos from the set. The main reason for Warner Bros.’s hurried release of an official Catwoman photo was the existence of amateur pictures. Avoiding pictures of Bane or the Batwing or Batman leading the charge with the police in tow is not an option anymore. Since the information is so widely available, it’s all simply part of the conversation now. We cover it here simply because the information is out there, and people want to know — all of which begs the question, “Why are we doing this?” Why is there a drive to find out everything about a film before you see it in its proper form? I can’t help but believe that there is at least some subconscious battle of egos among Batman fans here, where the one who knows the most information that they’re not supposed to know is somehow superior. Here I was thinking that the whole point of all of this was that we are looking forward to seeing a movie, one that is meticulously structured with surprises and turns that are created to be enjoyed only within the context of the film and not a video some extra recorded on her iPhone. No one was scrambling to find out everything about “Inception” before its release. It had the benefit of a normal ad campaign and launch. Even if “The Dark Knight Rises” isn’t going to get the full 42 Entertainment treatment, it at least deserves a normal release along the lines of “Inception.” Now is a good time to remember that when it comes to Christopher Nolan movies, the one who goes in knowing the least is the one who has the most fun. What have you thought of the lead-up to “The Dark Knight Rises”? Let me know via @KPSull on Twitter, and we’ll discuss next week. Here’s a rundown of this past week’s “The Dark Knight Rises” news. The MPAA granted “The Dark Knight Rises” prologue a PG-13 rating. College Humor examined just how Batman found his voice . We visited the New York set for a look at

Some fans consider negative comments about The Dark Knight totally blasphemous. Christopher Nolan’s 2008 mega-blockbuster has reached the kind of untouchable status where it’s not only considered by many to be the best superhero movie of all time, some even consider it one of the best movies of all time.
