Student Returns Scholarship Intended For Black Students There’s been a lot of talk about whether white students should be privy to scholarships and awards generally reserved for Black students. Well one high schooler took the debate into his own hands. A white student at Riverside High School in California has returned a $1,000 dollar scholarship intended for black students. Jeffrey Warren of Martin Luther King High School received the scholarship from the Martin Luther King Senior Citizens Club at a school awards night last month, prompting giggles from the crowd. Later Jeffrey learned what all the laughter was about, prompting him to return the scholarship. Even though the presentation was an awkward moment, Jeffrey says “now it’s kind of a joke” with his his friends. Jeffrey’s father, Rod Warren, said his son applied for 27 scholarships and also won three others, two for $2,000 each and another $500 scholarship. He encouraged his son to apply for every scholarship for which he might be eligible. The Martin Luther King Senior Citizens Club plans on changing the language on the application for next year’s scholarship applicants to make it clear that the scholarship is intended only for African-American students. The scholarship application clearly states that only African-Americans are encouraged to apply, but that doesn’t go far enough. What do you think? Did he need to return the money? MTV News talks to ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ cast about Fox’s decision to enlist the two pop stars for the reality singing show. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears, L.A. Reid, Simon Cowell and Demi Lovato Photo: Britney Spears via Facebook NEW YORK — As the fall TV season continues to make news, Fox has had the most buzz thanks to the news that Demi Lovato and Britney Spears will sit down beside Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid as female judges on “The X Factor,” replacing Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul. On Monday (May 14), as talent from many of the network’s leading shows lined up to talk to the press at the Fox event, what everyone really wanted to know was how these two artists might fit on the reality competition show. Given that both have made names for themselves thanks to their own unique charms as pop stars, some of the more seasoned network vets offered up some sage advice for the reality show newbies. MTV News chatted with the folks of “So You Think You Can Dance,” in the hours before the presentation where they were confirmed, to get their sage advice for Brit and Demi. “You know, I don’t have any advice for those ladies,” “SYTYCD” host Cat Deeley explained. “What I do like about it though is they will be able to absolutely impart some serious wisdom. I love the idea that they’ve been in the business for so long and since being kids and so quite often they’ve had successes and they’ve had failures on things. “And I think the most important thing is the mistakes we make,” she added. “You learn so much from mistakes that you make and I think they’ll be able to impart their wisdom to the new kids coming through. I think it’s a great booking.” Judge Mary Murphy seemed excited by the chance to run into the girls at Fox-related events, and even shared that she’d love to see dancer Britney make an appearance on her show as well. “So she would be a good [guest] too if she wanted to pop on over, but I think she’s going to be a busy young woman with everything she has going on,” she said. “I think we’ll tune in to find out what the heck she’s gonna say!” she said, going on to share some judging advice. “Just try to speak from the heart and you can’t go wrong.” While Murphy and Deeley focused on the positive when it comes to their highly publicized judging spots, Nigel Lythgoe wondered if the singers (Britney, 30, and Demi, 19) might be too young for a mentor-type position. “Well they’ve got to look on it as a brand-new show, to be frank. I don’t think they need to look at the first season. I think they’ve got to be honest as they can be,” he said of coming in for season two. “They’re both artists and artists will always couch any criticism because they know that they’ve been criticized, so they’ve got to ignore that. “They’ve got to be as honest as they can be with their contestants and just inspire them to be better,” he said, before sharing his one hesitation about them. “My only reservation is they’re both young and I do think that mentors should be of an age,” he added, joking he fears it might put older experts, like him, out of a job. “I do think mentors have had so much experience before they mentor. At the same time, both of these young ladies have had incredible personal experience and been through so much in their own lives that hopefully they can bring that to the party too. But at the end of the day, they are going to take newcomers and literally push them through a reality television competition. Our Skin Skout saw a sneak preview of The Hunger Games earlier this week and says that the odds are not ever in favor of star Jennifer Lawrence showing skin in this sci-fi blockbuster. 37 minutes in Jennifer appears in a skin-tight black outfit as part of her presentation, and 42 minutes in she dons another tight workout outfit while practicing archery, but overall the PG-13 rated Hunger Games will leave you starved for nudity. And unfortunately Jennifer has yet to do a proper nude scene, though she went skin-tight for her role as Mystique in X-Men: First Class (2011), stripped to her bra in The Poker House (2008) and donned a bikini as a baby-faced 17-year-old on The Bill Engvall Show . But all is not lost, Skin fans: in a revealing interview with Esquire last month, Jennifer said that while she’s never done onscreen nudity, she’s open to the possibility: “ So far, I haven’t found a film I’d love to be naked in… But I certainly never look at an actress naked in a movie and judge her. Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez will help usher in the return of the Billboard Music Awards. Though the ceremony was cancelled in 2007, it will now air live from Las Vegas’ MGM Grand on May 22nd via ABC. The Billboard Music Awards honors those acts who excelled on the Billboard charts during the period of February 28th 2010 through March 1st 2011. In addition to Rihanna and Lopez, the presentation will include live showings from Black Eyed Peas, Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum and Taio Cruz. And after weeks of largely being in the dark about the true nature of the split because of competing statements from both sides, fans were glad the interview finally answered several lingering questions. “Finished watching #last word… such an epic way to address to fans that they’re as strong as ever,” Paramore fan Tiinytots tweeted . A 92nd Street Y event with Steve Martin was interrupted on Monday night when interviewer Deborah Solomon was handed a note, which she read aloud, asking her to focus more on Martin’s career. Apparently, the note was in response to angry e-mails from viewers watching on closed-circuit TVs who felt that the presentation focused too much on the art world, which is the setting Martin’s latest novel, The Object of Beauty . Besides interrupting the interview, the 92nd Street Y has sent an email apologizing and offering all who were unsatisfied a $50 gift certificate refund. Both Solomon and Martin himself have condemned this move as unnecessary and disrespectful, and frankly, it looks as though they’re right.
