‘Dark Knight Rises’ Vocals, ‘Star Trek’ Villain Spark Nerdy Debates

‘Talk Nerdy to Me’ returns with an all-new episode about Bane’s hard-to-decipher voice, ‘Star Trek 2’ and the MTV Movie Brawl 2012 tournament. By Josh Wigler Benedict Cumberbatch Photo: Getty Images Welcome to 2012, fellow nerds! With return trips to Middle-earth and Gotham City in the cards, not to mention sightings of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Ridley Scott ‘s return to sci-fi on the horizon, the coming months are sure to usher in one of the most geek-friendly years of all time. It’s only appropriate then that “Talk Nerdy to Me” (the MTV News one-stop shop for all things comic books, movies and television) rises to the size and stature of the new year. That means more Hulk hands, light-sabers and action figures, more punch-out sound effects and — most importantly — more heated nerdy debate to come all throughout 2012 … and it all starts now! Watch the embedded video for the latest episode of “Talk Nerdy to Me,” and read on for a synopsis of what we discussed this week on the show! The Bane Problem “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” has been kicking ass and taking names at the box office for weeks now, thanks in no small part to the “Dark Knight Rises” prologue attached to IMAX prints of the Tom Cruise action vehicle. Fans are raving about the first look at Christopher Nolan’s last Batman movie, except for one teensy, tiny problem: Bane’s voice . The Caped Crusader’s newest nemesis’ mask-muffled muttering has left some viewers scratching their heads, and Nolan’s apparent insistence on not improving the clarity of Bane’s dialogue has only led to further bewilderment. But should fans really be so worried about the so-called “Bane problem,” or is it all much ado about nothing? Find out what Team Nerdy thinks in this week’s episode. “Sherlock” Goes to Space Between playing Britain’s greatest detective and Middle-earth’s most fearsome dragon, how many more iconic roles does Benedict Cumberbatch need to plop on his plate? Why not give him one more: The “Sherlock” and “War Horse” actor is beaming aboard J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek 2” as the film’s lead villain, ending a long search that’s seen actors Benicio del Toro and Edgar Ramirez circling the role. But the question remains: Who is Cumberbatch playing? “Nerdy’s” Brian Phares expects a new character, while the rest of the team feels like screaming “KHAAAAAAAN!” Who do you think Cumberbatch is playing? The Brawl for It All Finally, nothing like a shameless plug to start the new year right! Team Nerdy took some time to talk about MTV Movie Brawl 2012 , our current tournament to decide which movie you guys are most excited to see in the coming year. Some flicks like “Hunger Games” and “Breaking Dawn” are dominating as expected, but others — namely “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Skyfall” and “The Amazing Spider-Man” — are underperforming, so much so that some so-called “shoo-ins” might not even make it into the March Madness-style bracket kicking off on Monday. We already put the question to “Avengers” and “Spider-Man” fans , but it bears repeating to the Batman and Bond crowd: Where are you guys? Time’s running out! Lady Gaga’s Big 2012: A Psychic Weighs In

‘This tour is going to be really good for her,’ psychic Jesse Bravo says of Gaga’s planned 2012 BTW Ball. By MTV News Staff Lady Gaga Photo: Jason Kempin/ Getty Images As 2012 rolls along, Lady Gaga has already teased she has some big plans ahead. So MTV News decided to look to New York-based psychic Jesse Bravo to see what fate has in store for the pop superstar. Bravo recently rolled up to the MTV News offices and looked into his crystal ball. “Lady Gaga for 2012, it’s going to be sort of a slower year for her because she has her tour, which means she’s not putting out a lot of new material,” Bravo explained, despite Gaga’s tease that she is working on her follow-up to 2011’s Born This Way . “So for me, when I sort of looked up around there to see what was happening for her, I saw her sales sort of slow down because of new material. But she’s also building up this new momentum for running her base for this tour. This tour is going to be really good for her.” Gaga has already thought about the Born This Way Ball , tweeting over the holidays that she was pondering the things she wants to sell on tour. “Designing merch for the tour, when you see it you will die. #deathbyinexpensiveglamour ,” she wrote. Mother Monster is also famously known for her wild style, which Bravo said won’t disappoint in the next 12 months. “I believe her next big outfit is a cross between two things, and I was sort of stuck in between, like, where I should go with this because I saw two outfits, which means they can come in succession,” he said. “I don’t know which one is going to come first. But I will believe the one that I saw is this outfit, and I can’t really describe it, but it’s going to have lights embedded in it. So it’s going to be pretty bizarre. And then I saw another outfit and it’s like a body outfit, one that you spray-paint on, and I don’t know if it’s a stars-and-stripes theme, but I saw that there were stars and stripes in the right areas.” In addition to all the ups in her career, Gaga’s personal life will also prosper, according to Bravo, which means that she may get even more serious with her rumored beau and “You and I” co-star, “Vampire Diaries” actor Taylor Kinney. “Her personal life is going to stay stable for a while. The reason why is that on the outside she shows she’s a strong character — and for business she is — but on the inside she’s a mush. And so as a result, she needs to have her relationship in place, especially right now when she needs that support on going on something that’s so big,” he said. “Two years is a long, long time [to tour]. I don’t think that relationship is going … it’s not going out.” Just how serious might they get? Well, Gaga, believe it or not, is already pondering a family, according to Bravo. (Although she did note in a recent interview that the only family she is focused on is her new music .) “I also feel this need of having children. So I don’t know how this is going to play because we know she has a tour and she’s not going to stop the tour short to have a child,” Bravo predicted. “And I know that work is on her mind, but I know that [her spirit guide] Liberace is telling me about a child. And I know that in the back of her mind, she wants one. I think with her, it’s about scheduling … and I would say we’re looking somewhere at 2014-2015. That’s going to be her time.” What do you think about Jesse Bravo’s predictions for Lady Gaga? Tell us in the comments! Related Videos 2012 Psychic Predictions!

Evanescence’s ‘The Other Side’: Hear A Preview!

MTV News previews a second song from band’s hotly anticipated new album. By James Montgomery Evanescence’s Amy Lee Photo: MTV News Last week, Evanescence invited MTV News down to Nashville to talk about their much-anticipated new album and play us a handful of tracks from the disc, which hits stores October 11. On Monday, we gave you an exclusive preview of “What You Want,” the album’s roaring first single. Now, we’re about to pull the curtain back on another song, “The Other Side,” a booming track that gives credence to frontwoman Amy Lee’s claim that Ev’s new effort is “the heaviest record” they’ve ever made. A thunderous mix of double-bass drums, churning, chunky guitars and, of course, Lee’s ethereal, widescreen vocals, “The Other Side” is the kind of song that starts big and only gets bigger, culminating in a chorus that’s powerful enough to be measured in megatons. Like “What You Want,” it’s an aggressive track, but, as Lee pointed out, it may also be the best example of what she’d previously described as “fun.” There’s an elastic groove to the playing, a looseness that only comes from a band letting it all hang out. “There’s this element, this thing that we’re doing that I can’t really describe. We’re just going to have to release the record and create an adjective [for it],” she laughed. “It’s just … ‘musicianship.’ We’re enjoying playing, and the way that I’m singing, the way that I’m writing my vocals, it’s not about the most dramatic expression of pain, it’s like, ‘I’m singing this because it feels really good to sing the melody that way.’ And I think that song has both. It’s beautiful and epic, but at the same time it’s got that rocking vibe.” And in keeping with the overall theme of the album, “The Other Side” is very much a band song (there’s a reason they’re calling the new album simply Evanescence ), the result of Lee working — and reworking — the track with her bandmates and producer Nick Raskulinecz. And while that process makes the song a definite departure for Evanescence, its subject matter &#8212 namely, death — is something Lee has been dealing with for years. Though, as is the case with pretty much everything on the new album, for the first time, she’s tackling it in a different way. “I wrote it with the guys. It was real collaborative. That was a hard one for me to write the lyrics for, because I had the chorus — it’s very epic and dramatic; ‘Counting the days to meet you on the other side’ — but then, the verses, again, that element of fun is coming back in, you know, the band, it’s grooving,” Lee explained. “So I’m like, ‘How do I sing about death in a way that’s sort of bitchy?’ Like, it’s not really possible … it’s hard to explain. But it’s harder than it sounds.” What do you think of “The Other Side”? Share your reviews in the comments. Related Videos Evanescence: First Listen
