At the D23 Expo last week, speculation ran rampant about what new films Disney would announce. Two years ago, D23 was where they officially announced Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and this year, we got the confirmation of two upcoming Pixar movies. One thing that wasn’t mentioned, at least by the Disney executives, was Tron 3, a sequel to Tron: Legacy. ‘Transformers’ Sequel Sets Box-Office Record

Michael Bay’s third installment in the series had the highest-grossing July 4th debut ever. By Ryan J. Downey “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Paramount Pictures There’s no hiding the success of the “robots in disguise” franchise: “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” enjoyed the highest-grossing Fourth of July film debut ever over the weekend. Summer sequel mania was in full swing over the Independence Day holiday as the latest “Transformers” movie took in an estimated $97.5 million. “Transformers” beat the 2011 opening-weekend record previously set by “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” which just crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide. Director Michael Bay’s third installment in the “Transformers” series took in more than $180 million during its six-day opening, which started with Tuesday night previews. While it beat the Independence Day record held by “Spider-Man 2” thanks to inflation and 3-D screenings, it fell short of the superhero sequel in terms of overall attendance and far behind the last “Transformers” opening as well. Only 38 percent of major critics found the film favorable, according to Rotten Tomatoes . Last weekend’s big sequel, “Cars 2,” suffered from the largest second-week drop in Pixar’s history. The talking-car-centered animated kid flick fell 60 percent to #2 with an estimated $26.2 million, with an 11-day total of $123 million. Cameron Diaz’s “Bad Teacher” was #3 on the box-office chart with $14.5 million for an 11-day total of $59.9 million. Critics have not been kind to “Larry Crowne,” which opened at #4 with just $13.1 million. ” ‘Larry Crowne’ has Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts and a good premise and a colorful supporting cast,” wrote Roger Ebert . “But what it doesn’t have is a reason for existing.” The weekend’s other new romantic comedy, Selena Gomez’s “Monte Carlo,” failed to even crack the top five with its $7.4 million debut. “Super 8” was #5 with $7.8 million. JJ Abrams’ homage to co-producer Steven Spielberg’s thrill-filled coming-of-age stories has earned more than $108 million in four weeks of release. ‘Transformers 3’ Box Office: How High Can It Go?

‘Dark of the Moon’ might not make as much as ‘Revenge of the Fallen,’ but that doesn’t make it a failure. By Eric Ditzian Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Paramount Pictures Last month, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” corralled $92.2 million over its opening weekend — the highest total of 2011. How could Jack Sparrow possibly complain? Well, that lofty sum was still well below the openings of both 2006’s “Dead Man’s Chest” ($135.6 million) and 2007’s “At World’s End” ($114.7). The fact is, even the most robust of movie franchises tend to wane in terms of box-office bucks; the familiar pattern is a first film that sets the stage, a second installment that cashes in on the anticipation and then subsequent offerings that can’t continue the upward trend. Such is the case with “Transformers.” There’s much to celebrate with “Dark of the Moon,” which enjoyed a first-day gross on Wednesday of $42.5 million (when you count midnight screenings), beating the first-day pull of “On Stranger Tides” (a Friday release, no less). That puts the third “Transformers” film on track for a seven-day debut of as much as $200 million or more. So why might Optimus Prime be dissatisfied with that opening? “Revenge of the Fallen” opened to $62 million on a Wednesday in 2009, on its way to a one-week total of almost $240 million. Yet any dissatisfaction must be tempered with historical box-office perspective. “The fact that ‘T3’ didn’t measure up to ‘T2’ isn’t really a surprise, as the fatigue factor finally caught up to the franchise,” said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. “This is the case for most films series as they reach the threequel. Plus, it didn’t help ‘Transformers’ that the second film was, for the most part, trashed by critics, fans and even the filmmakers.” While “Dark of the Moon” is off to a comparatively slow start, some industry observers believe it could pick up over the holiday weekend. “Everything we’re seeing on Facebook and Twitter indicates that word-of-mouth is extremely positive,” said Phil Contrino, editor of Boxoffice.com. “It’s still a bit early to rush to judgment on how well this is going to hold up over the holiday frame. It could explode in a big way over the weekend.” Perhaps. Or not. There’s no doubt the franchise took a public-opinion hit after the second film. And while the third one offers perhaps the finest use of 3-D since “Avatar,” it comes at a time when audiences are battling back against a host of shoddy 3-D offerings by simply not paying the extra bucks for another dimension. “Dark of the Moon” is a victim of the three-dimensional failings of “Clash of the Titans.” At the same time, we can’t ignore the worldwide situation. Globally, “Dark of the Moon” might well eclipse the $836 million total of “Revenge of the Fallen” (just as “On Stranger Tides” could end up being the biggest “Pirates” flick when international grosses are factored in). Thus, Optimus rejoices! So where does all this leave “Transformers” going forward? Both star Shia LaBeouf and director Michael Bay have declared, in no uncertain terms, that they plan to end their involvement with the series after three films. Both creatively and financially, that might not be such a bad thing. “This franchise needs new blood and a new angle going forward,” Bock said, going on to suggest the fourth film needs to leave the familiar environs of Earth behind and deeply explore the robot alien’s home planet. “Maybe a trip to Cybertron will be the spark ‘Transformers 4’ needs. Don’t bring it to us, we’ll come to you! But we will likely have to wait three to four years.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Super 8’ Takes #1 Spot At Weekend Box Office

J.J. Abrams movie is only non-sequel in the top five. By Ryan J. Downey Joel Courtney in “Super 8” Photo: Paramount “Super 8” took the #1 spot at the box office over the weekend. The film’s $37 million opening isn’t on par with recent summer blockbusters, but it did beat studio expectations, according to reports. And “Super 8” bears the distinction of being the only non-sequel in the weekend’s top five. The “Super 8” marketing campaign employed many of the tactics used to promote 2008’s “Cloverfield,” which was produced by “Super 8” writer/ director J.J. Abrams. The movie stars a cast of relative unknowns and features a plot that was largely kept hidden in the trailers. Abrams devised “Super 8” as something of an homage to the work of Steven Spielberg, who served as producer. Reviews have been largely positive. “For all its obvious touches of Spielbergia, ‘Super 8’ feels a whole lot like ‘The Iron Giant’ meets ‘Stand by Me,’ ” wrote FEARnet’s Scott Weinberg. “Super 8” was produced by Paramount, which like MTV is owned by Viacom. The weekend’s only other new movie in wide release was “Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer,” a children’s film based on the widely popular series of books by Megan McDonald, who co-wrote the script. The movie opened poorly, landing at #7 with just $6.2 million. And it’s one of the worst reviewed films of the year so far, according to critical aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. “X-Men: First Class” was #2 in its second week of release with $25 million for a $98.8 million total. The superhero prequel is the best reviewed of the franchise since 2003’s “X2: X-Men United.” Meanwhile, “The Hangover Part II” passed “Fast Five” to become the highest-grossing movie of 2011 thus far. The buddy comedy took in $18.5 million for a $216.5 million domestic total. Critics have largely panned the film, although co-star Zach Galifianakis detailed plans for another sequel in a recent interview with magazine (he did not confirm his involvement). “Kung Fu Panda 2” came in at #4 at the box office. The animated sequel, which features Jack Black as the voice of the title character, took in $16.6 million for a $126.9 million total. “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” was #5 with $10.8 million for a $208.7 million total. This weekend’s new releases include “Green Lantern,” starring Ryan Reynolds as the DC Comics superhero; “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” starring Jim Carrey; and the PG-13 romance “The Art of Getting By.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Super 8.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Transformers: Dark Of The Moon’ Features ‘More Mature’ Story, Michael Bay Says

MTV News got a sneak peek at the mind-blowing action of the new film. By Kara Warner Bumblebee in “Transformers: Dark Of The Moon” Photo: Paramount While gearing up for the release of “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” director Michael Bay has not been shy about his desire to right the missteps in “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”: putting more focus on writing a better story, making the action more accessible, yet “epic” in scale. Based on the footage and trailer MTV News saw on the Paramount lot before a candid chat with Bay on Thursday, it looks like he’s making good on his word. We can’t get into specifics, of course, but with regard to the trailer — the 2-D version of which will roll out in theaters on April 28, while a 3-D version will hit in front of “Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides” — it takes the intrigue of the teaser trailer , plus the intensity from the action-packed 30-second Super Bowl spot and adds enough mind-blowing, mesmerizing robotgasm goodness to leave even the most passive of fans slack-jawed. Or googly-eyed. One of the two. We also saw snippets of returning and new supporting cast members, a possible Pink Floyd tie-in and a tantalizing, yet not at all overwhelming, 3-D sizzle reel. Speaking of his latest and likely last “Transformers” installment, Bay began by admitting that he is not trying to capture the magic of the first film. “You’re never going to match the innocence of the first movie and the wonderment,” he said. “The genie is out of the bottle there. This one, I think, is a more mature storyline. It’s definitely darker.” He later explained that the new movie has more of the aliens’ backstory. “You learn a lot more about the hierarchy, there’s a lot more history of what they’ve had on Cybertron,” he said. Bay also went into his reasoning and reservations behind the decision to shoot in 3-D, and what (actually, who) convinced him to go ahead with the new technology. “[James Cameron], at the last minute, goes, ‘Mike, come on,'” Bay recalled, imitating the “Avatar” director’s enthusiasm with a slightly deep and gravelly inflection in his voice. “This is like my idol. He goes, ‘Mike come on, we’ve done everything.’ I’m thinking, ‘I haven’t done everything.’ ” Cameron pushed him to try out this “new toy,” and that despite all the headaches that are added to the filmmaking process with shooting in 3-D, he’s glad he did it. “3-D, it’s pretty great when you see these robots interact in the space,” he said. Other excitement added into the mix for “Dark of the Moon” are the suped-up action sequences, specifically a scene that involves base jumpers jumping off the Sears Tower and literally flying through downtown Chicago. “There’s a lot of action stuff I’ve never done before that’s pretty cool,” Bay said of what makes this installment stand out. “I want to make up for the second one, and I want to leave the franchise as best I can.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . New ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

The new preview gives us a few clues about Jack’s journey to the Fountain of Youth. By Eric Ditzian Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow Photo: Disney We’ve just crossed the two-month mark; there’s now a mere 59 days until “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” shoves off and into theaters. What’s more, there’s now a brand-new trailer for Johnny Depp’s seafaring 3-D adventure flick, giving us important pieces of plot info and raising all new questions about what we’re going to see when the movie debuts. As we continue to count down the days until that premiere, let’s take a look at the new trailer’s five key moments. Looks Like They Took a Wrong Turn We’ve already seen a variation of this scene — Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow walking under some kind of stone archway on an island — but in the new trailer, we see the camera push forward a little, giving us a peek at what’s on the other side: a ship perched on a cliff high above the water line. How’d it get there? Well, as we see throughout the new footage, the laws of physics get twisted in all sorts of funky ways. Just as compelling a question as what the ship is doing up there is: Whose ship is it? Speaking of ships, the Black Pearl is back in the mix, though this time it seems to be in the hands of nefarious Blackbeard (Ian McShane). And as Captain Barbossa explains, Blackbeard has made some unconventional improvements to the craft. “The rigging had come to life. Our own ship turned against us,” he tells Jack as we see shots of ropes whipping around like tentacles and plucking up pirates. What sort of dark magic does Blackbeard wield? A confusing one, no doubt, because after Sparrow gets caught up in the ship’s new powers, he blurts out, “Captain, I wish to report a mutiny. I can name fingers and point names!” We’ve seen plenty of mermaids floating through previous “Pirates” footage, but the new trailer gives us the most information yet about how these creatures fit into the storyline. Turns out, a mermaid is needed to locate the fountain of youth — that mythical place everyone in “On Stranger Tides” is trying to find. That explains why, as in earlier footage, we see a shot of a mermaid trapped in a seriously large fish tank. Captivity, however, can kill a mermaid. Given that under his tattoos and dreadlocks, Sparrow is a very moral guy, we suspect Jack might go from capturing a mermaid to setting one free. From the very first official “On Stranger Tides” photos , we’ve seen Jack being dragged into Old Royal Naval College by King George II’s guards and offered the job of finding the fountain of youth. But the captain isn’t one take to orders. How does he slip away from King George’s men? A clue seems to arrive in the form of Jack wearing a musty old wig and a bright red robe, just like a British judge: nothing like a clever disguise to help a pirate escape. As we mentioned, Jack’s quest for the fountain brings him into contact with lands in which the laws of physics don’t entirely apply. Early in the new trailer, for instance, a drop of water seems to fall upwards, hitting Jack’s hands as it goes. Here we see our hero in a sort of cave that has a roof of water. How exactly does something like happen? And, furthermore, how is he pulled up into the water as if by reverse gravity? We likely won’t get the full answer until the movie arrives on May 20.
