Super Recyclable Laptop Can Be Torn Down in 2 Minutes Without Tools

Photo via Autodesk The bulk of a computer is recyclable. Each of our desktops or laptops is made of components that can be easily turned into a new product at end of life — or rather, it should be easy to turn them into something new. While the materials themselves are highly recyclable, it’s tough work to separate them on the recycling line, which is one of the reasons recycling electronics is so expensive. Manufacturers are very slowly starting to take this in mind in their design phase, and third-party certifiers like EPEAT are giving them extra points for designing for easy recycling. But … Read the full story on TreeHugger

What Good are 75 Hummers Worth of Juice Pouches?

Image credit: Franco Folini /Flickr As you may know, TerraCycle partners with the public in what we call Brigades to collect everything from wine corks to Sharpie pens, and most famously, Capri Sun juice packs. Each piece collected earns 2 cents donated to the charitable organization or school of people’s choice. Astoundingly, we just reached $1 million paid to Drink Pouch brigaders! That’s 50 million pouches…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Ozone Layer Could Recover to Pre-1980 Levels by 2045-2060, Says U.N.

But It Will Take Longer for Holes at the Poles According to a report titled “Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion 2010” by U.N. scientists, the ozone layer has finally stopped thinning and could recover to pre-1980 levels by 2045-2060, though the annual springtime ozone hole over Antarctica (pictured above) is not expected to recover until 2073. The Montreal Protocol that banned many ozone-depleting chemicals, signed in 1987, is mostly responsible for the recovery…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Bill Clinton: Closing Landfills a "Silver Bullet"

Bill Clinton at the opening plenary of 2010’s Clinton Global Initiative, via Daylife As we know, Bill Clinton has a knack for fostering partnerships between states, businesses, and nonprofits: It’s what his annual Global Initiative is all about. That extends even to some unlikely provinces — like trash, for instance. During the opening plenary of 2010’s session, he remarked that he hadn’t yet heard of anyone coming all the way to CGI to talk about garbage. But all that changed toda… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Better Bioplastic Built From Nut Shells and Plant Stems

Image via engadget One of the major sticking points for making plastics from plants such as corn is that it takes a lot of fossil fuel and resources to grow a crop, just to turn it into plastic that is still difficult to recycle. The pros of plant-based plastics don’t really out-weigh the cons. But what if bioplastic could be made from plant waste that is on hand anyway? That’s what reserachers at NEC are hoping to create, having formed a plastic made from 70% plant waste, including stems and cashew nut shells…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

High-Tech Trash Bins Rat Out Residents Who Refuse to Recycle

Photo via orphanjones Cleveland residents are about to get an extra incentive to recycle — if they don’t, their trash bins will tattletale and they’ll be slapped with a $100 fine. The city is starting a new program that features trash bins embedded with microchips. If the recycling cart isn’t rolled out to the curb on a regular basis, trash collectors are prompted to go through the bins to make sure recyclables are being sorted correctly. If they’re not, the residents will pay for their laziness. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Rubber Made from Chewed Gum Could Replace Plastic

Image via The Gumdrop Bin It’s not news that chewing gum is the scourge of city sidewalks. Nor that it takes a lot of money and energy to clear gum off walkways, shortening the lifespan of the surfaces at the same time. Designer Anna Bullus read the statistics of the gum problem in London — that the government spends £150 million annually to clean up gum, over 30,000 pieces of which end up stuck to Oxford street alone each day — and she decided there must be a better way to deal with the problem. So, she headed to the laboratory and came up with a way to transform chewed gum into a us… Read the full story on TreeHugger
