We Could Have 10 MW Wind Turbines by 2011 and 15 MW Turbines by 2020

Photo: Enercon E-126 , currently the biggest wind turbine Winds of Change Wind turbines have been getting bigger and more powerful for a while. It wasn’t that long ago that 1.5-megawatt turbines were considered impressive, but now we have the Enercon E-126 (pictured above and below), currently the biggest wind turbine and able to generate 7 megawatts. But even that isn’t even close to reaching the physical limits of what we can build; The Norwegian company Sway will build a 533-feet, 10-megawatt giant by 2011 (follow… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Pedal Powered Kitchen Center An Idea Whose Time Has Come

Back in the 60’s the Nutone Kitchen Center was all the rage in high-end kitchens; The idea was that you would have a pile of different appliances and one motor to serve them all, built into the kitchen counter. But in the end it didn’t make a lot of sense as electric motors were relatively cheap. But what if you do not want to use electricity? The mechanism is going to take up a lot more space and perhaps be more expensive. Designer Christoph Thetard has designed the R2B2 “to reduce private electric waste production.”… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Limnion Geothermal Energy Reactors Offer Idiot-proof Installation, Small Footprint

Notwithstanding our previously mentioned reservations about ground source heat pumps, For people who live by lakes and rivers they can make a lot of sense. There is no drilling required; just throw the pipe into the lake. But even this simpler system is subject to errors in installation, and all that pipe can disrupt fish habitat and cause other problems. That is why I was so intrigued when I saw the advertisement for the Limnion Geothermal Transfer System ; It puts the enti… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Thick Layer Of Oil Discovered on Gulf of Mexico Seafloor

Satellite photo taken May 24th, 2010, by NASA. Photo: NASA , CC. This Story is Far From Over! The bad news about the BP oil spill aren’t over. Researchers have taken soil samples from the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico and discovered that a lot of the oil that some thought had evaporated or dissipated has actually just settled on the sea floor. Samples taken by the science vessel Oceanus show that the oil can be found for dozens of miles in all directions around the busted well location…. Read the full story on TreeHugger
