Wild Permaculture Forest Gardening on the BBC (Video)

Image credit: Permaculture Media The BBC seems to have gotten on a permaculture kick lately. Not long ago the broadcaster aired a beautiful and big thinking documentary about peak oil, agriculture, and one farmers’ attempts to redesign her farm along permaculture principles . Now I’ve just come across a great video in which the BBC’s very own gardening guru Alan Titchmarsh explores a stunning forest garden created by two of the pioneers of permaculture in Britain. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Why Resilience Beats Sustainability – Rob Hopkins on Transition in the City (Video)

Image credit: ResilientPLANET Yesterday I posted about the new film from the creators of the End of Suburbia . This time around, the focus is on cities—and how cities can adapt to future shocks from peak oil, climate change, food shortages and heaven knows what else might be thrown at us. No word yet on when the film itself will be released, but select material is beginning to appear on YouTube, including an interview with Rob Hopkins, creator of… Read the full story on TreeHugger

How To End The War On The Car: Recognize It Is A Win-Win Situation

In Toronto , the new Mayor thinks roads belong to trucks and cars , and thinks bike lanes slow them down. He calls bike lanes and streetcars a “war on the car.” In fact, there is some evidence of exactly the opposite; in many cases, a person on a bike might otherwise be taking up road space in a car. In New York , the investment in bike lanes has resulted in a 13% increase in usage last year, and an 88% increase in the last three years. According to

Which Came First, The Bike Or The Bike Lane? (Video)

Image credit ::Modern Mechanix When Richard Masoner of Cyclelicious asked “What came first, the bikes, or the bike lanes? Do bike facilities encourage people to bike? Or are they a response to increased demand after there are more bikes on the road?” I sent him a link to a post we did showing that bike lanes existed in 1928 , but another co… Read the full story on TreeHugger

A Picture Is Worth: Snow Removal In Copenhagen

Image Credit Mikael Colville-Andersen We have not had much snow here in much of North America yet, but in Europe they have been socked with it; Copenhagen has had 18 inches so far. But where we don’t get our bike lanes ploughed first (that would be considered a war on the car), if at all. But Mikael Colville-Andersen writes in The Ultimate Bike Lane Snow Clearance Blogpost! :” During snowstorms I’ve seen these bike lane sweepers roll back and forth past my f… Read the full story on TreeHugger

"Car-Free" Painting is Sure to Make Cyclists Smile

Painting by Kiuchi Tatsuro , used with permission. Cyclists Can Dream, Can’t They? TreeHugger reader Cynthia D. sent me this painting by Tatsuro Kiuchi, and I immediately loved it. The style is very interesting – it reminds me a bit of some old European comic books I found in my aunt’s basement when I was young – but what makes this worth posting on TreeHugger is the nice inversion. Cyclists in the main lanes, and a separate lane on the side of the road with decals for cars. It’s not something we’re likely to see in the near future, but… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Volvo Working on Storing Energy in a Car’s Body Panels

“Imagine a car whose body also serves as a rechargeable battery.” One of the main challenges with electric cars is that batteries are bulky and heavy. Volvo is trying to solve that problem by turning a car’s body panels into an energy storage device, an idea that, if feasible, would kill two birds with one stone by freeing up space inside the car and making it relatively lighter…. Is the Shweeb Ready for Prime Time?

The Shweeb is derived from the German “Schweben”, meaning to float or suspend. A logical name for a device invented by a New Zealander living in Tokyo. Commenters had issues when we wrote about it last year, But somebody likes it; It just won a million bucks in the Google 10 100 competition. Google writes: Shweeb is a concept for short to medium distance, urban personal transport, using human-powered vehicles on a monorail. We are providing $1 million to fund research and development to test Shweeb’s technology for an urban set… Read the full story on TreeHugger
