Seth Rogen: ‘I Smoke A Lot Of Weed When I Write’

‘I think way more people smoke weed than the media likes to acknowledge,’ actor tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Seth Rogen Photo: MTV News “That dude gave me the greatest gift I’ve had in the last five years,” Kevin Smith told MTV News earlier this year about his “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” star Seth Rogen. Smith wasn’t talking about some meaningful postproduction keepsake — say, the bubble-blowing ring ex-porn star Traci Lords uses for unclean purposes in the movie — but rather a joint Rogen and the filmmaker shared on the last day of shooting in 2008. “We sat back, watched some footage and sat there smoking,” Smith explained. “And I loved who I was.” Smith is now a gleeful proponent of weed, which he credits with spurring the most creatively productive years of his career, and Rogen is happy, as he put it recently to MTV News, to take credit for Smith “being stoned all the time.” “I either get people started smoking weed or I put them out of business smoking weed,” Rogen added with a laugh while promoting “50/50,” a comedy about a young guy with cancer in which the actor and co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s characters get high for suspect medicinal purposes. “I’m either your first or last.” While Smith credits pot as a sort of mind-expanding artistic gateway, Rogen says he lights up to ease the drudgery of the creative process. “I smoke a lot of weed when I write, generally speaking,” he told us. “I don’t know if it helps me write. It makes me not mind that I’m writing. And I don’t know if it makes me work better, but it makes me not care that I’m working. Who wants to work? But if you’re stoned, it doesn’t seem like work.” To help you work better, to make you forget you’re actually working, to just have a good ol’ time — why and when people get blazed may differ. But Rogen is convinced that no matter how it goes down, it’s most certainly going down (and up in smoke). “I think a lot of people smoke weed,” he said. “I think way more people smoke weed than the media likes to acknowledge. Maybe it’s just the people I’m around, but I don’t think so. Pretty much everyone that I know smokes weed sometimes — with the exception of my parents.” Check out everything we’ve got on “50/50.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Mac Miller Breaks Down ‘Frick Park Market’ Video

‘It was a like a garden of girls and black light,’ Mac Miller tells MTV News of his latest clip. By Rob Markman Mac Miller in his “Frick Park Market” video Photo: Rostrum Records Making sandwiches while rapping isn’t as simple as you may think, but in his “Frick Park Market” video, Mac Miller makes it all look so easy. Filmed on location at his favorite Pittsburgh deli, Miller jumped behind the counter and got to work. Before we see Mac, however, we see his filthy-looking, gloveless hands putting together a turkey and cheese sandwich. “My hands aren’t really that dirty; that’s just the lighting,” Mac insisted when he broke down the video for MTV News. It’s not only his sandwich-making and lyricism the rapper puts on display. Mac also dresses up as his nerdy alter ego, Cam Rellum. Suited up in a blond Afro wig, blue tux and black-framed spectacles, the rapping version of Mac is impressed with his character portrayal. “I look so f—in’ awesome in that ’70s porno tuxedo, powder-blue,” the self-appraising Miller said jokingly. Miller also shines the light on his Most Dope crew. Jimmy drinks syrupy slushee mix straight from the Frick Park Market’s fountain, and TreeJay falls asleep atop the deli’s cash register. Looks like a good time, right? The party really gets started when Miller finds a secret door that leads to an alternate reality where models (painted in DayGlo paint) dance with furry animals under a black light. “The concept of that, it was like a garden of girls and black light,” Mac explained. “All these girls looked so sweet and trippy,” he remarked before revealing his original vision for the video’s models. “My idea was to put all the girls in onesie bathing suits and make them look like synchronized swimmers and put caps on ’em, but we just made ’em look trippy.” The video ends with Mac and friends rolling to Blue Slide Park , the neighborhood playground that he named his upcoming debut album after. “We all rolled up in costumes and kinda took over. These little kids were on the slide and we really just kinda bullied them off the slide and sent gigantic furries down the slide,” he said while laughing. “The parents were looking at me like, ‘Who is this?’ ” Mac Miller, duh! Seth Rogen Says ’50/50′ Head-Shaving Scene Was Improvised

‘My heart was beating hard,’ Joseph Gordon-Levitt tells MTV News. By Amy Wilkinson Joseph Gordon Levitt and Seth Rogen in “50/50” Photo: Summit Entertainment If the Summit Entertainment marketing machine has done its job, you’ve probably seen the eye-catching movie posters for the studio’s latest release “50/50.” The goofy one-sheet depicts a memorable scene from the film in which Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s cancer-stricken Adam shaves his head, while a dubious Adam (played by Seth Rogen) looks on. It’s one of the movie’s many lighthearted moments, adding levity to what could otherwise be a downer drama. But according to the film’s stars, the take wasn’t as carefree as it may have looked. “My heart was beating hard, because we only had one take because you can’t shave your head twice. It doesn’t work,” Gordon-Levitt said at the “50/50” premiere earlier this week in New York. “Normally, you can always do it over again when you’re making movies. You get a take two. But we only got take one, and it worked.” Apparently, Gordon-Levitt had another reason to be nervous about the scene — it wasn’t scripted. According to producer and co-star Rogen, the two just played it by ear. “We only had one shot at it,” Rogen recalled. “It was the first day of filming, and we improvised the whole thing, which is not wise when it’s something you have one take for, but it turned out funny. It went exactly how you see it in the movie, which was pretty good, I think.” You can judge Gordon-Levitt’s razor skills for yourself: “50/50,” co-starring Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard and Anjelica Huston, opened Friday (September 30). ‘Knocked Up’ Spin-Off News Surprised Seth Rogen

‘I just read about it just like everybody else,’ original star tells MTV News. ‘I was like, ‘Oh man, it looks like it’s really happening.’ ‘ By Eric Ditzian Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen in “Knocked Up” Photo: Suzanne Hanover/ Universal Studios Much like “16 and Pregnant” gave birth to “Teen Mom,” it seemed as though if Judd Apatow were ever to return to the world of “Knocked Up,” his hit 2007 comedy, the writer/director would continue the story with more about Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl’s characters and the child they had together. But that’s not what’s happening — not least of all because of the messy public backbiting between Apatow and Heigl over her character, Alison. Instead, Apatow is pushing forward with an extension of that world featuring Alison’s sister, Debbie (Leslie Mann), and brother-in-law, Pete (Paul Rudd). The film will apparently tell a story separate from the one told in “Knocked Up,” a story that simply focuses on Debbie and Pete’s troubled marriage. Still, the question remains: Will Heigl or Rogen pop up at any point in the new film? MTV News put that very question to Rogen when we caught up with him while he was promoting “Green Hornet.” “I don’t know,” he admitted. Rogen went on to explain that he had some knowledge that Apatow was working on “Knocked Up”-related material, but neither knew a project was locked in or if there’s a part in the script for him. “[Judd] mentioned it to me off-handedly a year ago, and then I just read about it just like everybody else,” Rogen explained. “I was like, ‘Oh man, it looks like it’s really happening.’ “So, I don’t know,” he added. “I’m going to call him today and see what the deal is.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Knocked Up.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Seth Rogen’s Untitled Cancer Flick No Longer Untitled

Monotone Canadian funnyman Seth Rogen’s cancer-based comedy is sporting a new name . Previously known as I’m With Cancer and then simply reported as Untitled Cancer Comedy, it’s now been dubbed Live With It. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as a 25 year-old who contracts a rare form of terminal cancer and Rogen stars as, I’m guessing, his braying boobish friend. They’re joined by a bevy of talented co-stars, including Anjelica Huston, Bryce Dallas Howard, Anna Kendrick and Philip Baker Hall. [ /Film ]

‘Green Hornet’ Trailer Showcases Seth Rogen’s Action-Hero Debut

Rogen wrote and stars in the 2011 film based on the classic pulp hero. By Rick Marshall Seth Rogen and Jay Chou in “Green Hornet” Photo: Columbia Pictures The trailer for “The Green Hornet” arrived online Monday night, giving audiences their first peek at “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” director Michel Gondry’s live-action film based on the classic pulp hero. Written by and starring funnyman Seth Rogen, the film has had a long and rocky road to the big screen, having changed studios, cast and filmmakers multiple times since the mid-’90s. The current iteration casts Rogen as Britt Reid, the playboy son of a media tycoon who becomes masked crime fighter the Green Hornet after he inherits his father’s empire. He’s assisted by Kato (played by Jay Chou), a martial-arts expert and gadget genius who had been a close friend of his father. The pair set their sights on the head of the Los Angeles crime syndicate, Benjamin Chudnofsky (played by Oscar-winning actor Christoph Waltz ), and must keep their identities a secret from both the criminal element and amateur detective Lenore “Casey” Case ( Cameron Diaz ), who’s getting a little too close to the duo — and the truth. “The film’s cast also includes “Battlestar Galactica” actor Edward James Olmos and British actor Tom Wilkinson, as well as music (and a possible performance) by heavy-metal rockers Anvil . In the just-released trailer, we get our first look at Chou and Rogen in action, and a hint of what Gondry referred to as the “Kato vision” used by Chou’s character during fight scenes. We also get a good look at the Black Beauty, Green Hornet’s souped-up car , which debuted during last year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego. “The Green Hornet” hits theaters January 14, 2011, in standard, 3-D and IMAX screenings.
