Earlier today, President Obama spoke out on Sony’s decision to pull The Interview from theaters in response to terrorist threats linked to North Korea. The POTUS agrees with Hollywood that the studio shouldn’t have caved, and he offered a sort of consolation prize to the movie-going public by offering up some unintentional comedy of his own: President Obama: Flubs James Franco’s Name “I think it says something interesting about North Korea,” said Obama while addressing the press. “That they decided to mount an all-out assault on a movie studio because of a satirical movie starring Seth Rogen and James Flacco.” Yes, in his mind, Obama seems to have combined James Franco and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco into one perfect being with a passion for art and a desperate desire to make the playoffs. Unfortunately for them, Martin has made it clear that he doesn’t give a dragon’s deuce what his fans think, and he recently decided to involve himself in a high-stakes international pissing contest. As we imagine you’ve heard by now, the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy The Interview was pulled from theaters this week following a series of terrorist threats from what’s believed to be a group of North Korean hackers. Several stars have expressed their frustration over the fact that the nation’s five largest theater chains backed away from the film, thus setting a dangerous precedent and essentially giving in to the demands of terrorists. But while most celebs are content to post outraged online tirades, Martin is putting his money where his mouth is and offering Rogen and company a chance to show their movie on the big screen. Now, it seems the so-called “Guardians of Peace” are still not satisfied, as they’ve reportedly issued further demands to execs at Sony Pictures Entertainment. According to CNN, the newest message from the hackers reads, in part: “We want everything related to the movie, including its trailers, as well as its full version down from every website hosting them immediately.” The group reportedly also demanded that The Interview never be released on DVD, pay-per-view, video on demand, or any other streaming service. Yes, the hackers aren’t satisfied by the fact that The Interview was dropped by every major theater chain ; they’ve decided to further flex their muscle by demanding that Sony essentially bury any evidence that the film ever existed. (An impossible task in 2014, of course, but something tells us that despite their technological know-how, the “Guardians” aren’t the most media-savvy lot.) Many Hollywood stars have been vocal in their criticism of Sony and the theater chains who distanced themselves from the film, and this latest salvo is likely to be taken as further evidence that giving in to the hackers was an ill-advised move that set a dangerous precedent. Still, the corporations that stood to profit from The Interview have capitulated thus far and sacrificed tens of millions already, so it’s unlikely that they’ll fight back on the comparatively small issue of a home media release. It was initially reported that the Sony hacking scandal would have no effect on the release of the controversial Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy, The Interview. Now, in the wake of terrorist threats from the North Korean group believed to be responsible for the hack, Sony execs are reportedly running scared and doing everything that they can to prevent further damaging attacks. This includes canceling the premiere of the The Interview that was scheduled for Thursday night in NYC…and possibly shelving the film altogether. TMZ is reporting that Sony marketers are at work on a plan to cancel or postpone the film’s release without making it look as though the company gave in to terrorist demands. Execs are reportedly hoping that so many theaters will refuse to show the film that they’ll be able to claim that they decided to shelve it for purely financial reasons.
