Race Matters: Does The Black Community Contribute To White America’s Limited View Of Blacks In Entertainment?

Is The Black Community To Blame For White America’s Perception Black Entertainment? Earlier this week, a screening was held at Manhattan’s SVA theatre in NYC to premiere the upcoming film “Baggage Claim,” which stars Paula Patton, Derek Luke, Jenifer Lewis and Jill Scott, among other prominent African-American entertainers. During a Q & A session with the cast following the viewing of the movie, the film’s director David. A. Talbert made an interesting statement in response to a question on how more “black romantic comedies” like “Baggage Claim” could make their way into the mainstream film industry. “Well, wait…..why does it have to be a “black” romantic comedy?” he responded. “Why can’t we just say “romantic comedy?” “It’s really just a relatable romantic comedy that just so happens to feature a predominantly African-American cast.” Talbert then went on to address how we as a community often put ourselves in a box when it comes to our own perception of who we are in mainstream entertainment, which inevitably contributes to the skewered perception that White America has of African-Americans in the entertainment industry. So Bossip fam, do you agree with director Talbert about the black community limiting our impact on the entertainment industry through the language that we use to describe our own presence? Or do you think that our society is still so far from post-racial status that we will be viewed through a limited perspective lens regardless of how we view ourselves? Let’s discuss.

WATCH: Love Is Torture −Jimmy Kimmel Re-Cuts ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ Trailer For The Rom-Com Crowd

Where was Jimmy Kimmel before the Oscars? Kathryn Bigelow could have used him.  On Wednesday night, the late-night talk-show host gave a comic lesson in marketing when he showed this trailer for the DVD release of  Zero Dark Thirty that re-positions the movie as a romantic comedy instead of a pro-torture CIA procedural. All it takes is a little voiceover magic and some creative editing to depict Jessica Chastain  as a workaholic in search of “the man of her dreams.” Pretty, pretty funny, as is the movie’s new title, Zero Dark Flirty , and tagline: “Sometimes it’s good to be a little bit Abbottabad.”  For those who limited their consumption of Oscar-nominated based-on-a-real-story CIA thrillers to  Argo , that’s the name of the town in Pakistan where Osama bin Laden’s compound was located. Speaking of Kimmel, he should be the next host of the Oscars. Hollywood loves him, and he’s got the perfect tone for the evening. In fact, Seth MacFarlane left me with the impression that he was trying to be Kimmel on Sunday night.  What do you think? Follow Frank DiGiacomo on  Twitter . Follow Movieline on  Twitter .

WATCH: Lizzy Caplan Looks Sad A Lot In ‘Save The Date’ Rom-Com Trailer

The critics blurbs in this clip say “romantic comedy” — as does the purple sex-toy scene — but the melancholy soundtrack and the sad, pensive looks on Lizzy Caplan and Alison Brie’ s faces say bring some Puffs when you see Michael Mohan’s Save the Date . Caplan is fast becoming the go-to girl for indie comedies that scrutinize the meaning of love, particularly as it relates to the institution of marriage. This past summer, she was part of the ensemble in Leslye Headland’s wickedly honest Bachelorette , and in Save the Date she plays Sarah, who learns something about herself when she gets caught up in a rebound romance after turning down her boyfriend’s marriage proposal.   Brie plays Caplan’s sister Beth who is caught up in the details of her own wedding. Hand me a tissue, please. I’m feeling weepy already. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter.  Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Sybil Danning Is Still the S&M Sex Goddess of Your Dreams [PIC]

It’s been thirty years since Sybil Danning ‘s heyday in flicks like Battle Beyond the Stars (1980) and Chained Heat (1983), but you’ll be happy to know that she’s still the same bodacious blonde ball-buster as always. In a new interview with Vice magazine, Sybil says it’s been difficult in recent years to find the ” good, strong characters ” that drew her to action in the first place, but she’s still a B-Queen for life: ” I’ve done a lot of comedies but I don’t think I am romantic comedy material, and those are the bulk of the movies offered to women on the A-list. I’m just better suited playing authoritative and strong-willed characters, and the B’s allow me to do that. ” Asked about her status as a sex symbol, Sybil says that she has no qualms about posing nude, ” as long as it’s on my own terms ,” and that she’s ” very proud ” of her following in the S&M community, adding “It’s funny, because in Austria everyone wears leather. We think nothing of it.” But the ultimate Sybil Danning quote? Asked about her favorite part of being an action star, she said: “I think guns are sexy although I would never hunt down an animal. I like to prey on the scum: child molesters, drug dealers, men who use and torture women. I have no problem shooting them and asking questions later.” Oh, Sybil. Never, ever change. Swoon for Josh Duhamel, Your Next Nicholas Sparks Hero

After zooming to fame with TV’s Las Vegas and the Transformers series (with the odd detour into Katherine Heigl rom-com territory), Josh Duhamel is coming full circle, in a way: The onetime All My Children soap star set to step into the next Nicholas Sparks romantic weepie, Safe Haven , opposite Footloose / Rock of Ages starlet Julianne Hough . The Sparks flick looks to be one-time would-be dentist Duhamel’s first straight romantic film role yet that doesn’t overlap into romantic comedy ( When in Rome , Life as We Know It ) or ensemble ( The Romantics , New Year’s Eve ). For Hough, Safe Haven will mark her first work in a non-performance-based role (as in Footloose , Burlesque , and Rock of Ages ) aside from her upcoming turn in Diablo Cody’s directorial debut . I say it’s about time Duhamel embrace his leading man status in the kind of movie that has more explosive sighs then explosions. Unleash that inner Leo du Pres, you gorgeous (and, per Sparks tradition) tortured man! Lasse Hallstrom is set to direct, with filming to begin in June for a pre-Valentine’s Week 2013 release. Soak up the synopsis and ponder: just how Sparksian will Safe Haven be? Safe Haven is an affirming and suspenseful story about a young woman’s struggle to find love again after she arrives in a small North Carolina town. Her reluctance to join the tight-knit community raises questions about her past. Slowly, she begins putting down roots, and gains the courage to start a relationship with Alex, a widowed store owner with two young children. But dark secrets intrude on her new life with such terror that she is forced to rediscover the meaning of sacrifice and rely on the power of love in this deeply moving romantic thriller. McG Considered Clue-Style Alternate Endings for This Means War, Admits He ‘Pussed Out’ on Terminator 4

It’s the biggest, most important question of the season, people: Whom will Reese Witherspoon choose, between pillow-lipped Brit Tom Hardy and confident playboy Chris Pine , in the spy vs. spy love triangle rom-com This Means War ? While you won’t get any spoilers here for the Valentine’s Day release, let Hardy and director McG tease you with the envelope-pushing alternate ending ideas that didn’t quite make it to the final cut. (And no — McG didn’t learn from Terminator: Salvation , which he admitted he “pussed out on.” Hindsight, my friends.) [To the hardcore spoiler-averse who don’t even want to know what doesn’t happen in the film, a mild warning for what follows…] The McG-helmed romantic action-comedy This Means War , written by X-Men: The Last Stand scribe Simon Kinberg, finds Reese Witherspoon dating Hardy and Pine at the same time, unaware that they are CIA spies and best friends. As both men find themselves falling for her she must decide which beau she truly wants to be with. At a press conference today in Los Angeles, McG revealed one idea that was tossed around early on for ending the film in an unconventional way – by releasing two endings into theaters simultaneously, one in which Witherspoon ends up with Hardy and another where she chooses Pine, with no indication to moviegoers of what they were in for. “We wanted to have flexibility and even talked about two endings and releasing it on 3,000 screens — 1,500 have this [ending] and 1,500 have that one, and just not saying anything,” McG said. “But it felt a little gimmicky in the end.” Releasing two endings into theaters in wide release? Now that would have been interesting, possibly even a worthy financial gamble if moviegoers enjoyed the film enough to see it again, either on home video or in theaters, just to see the alternate ending; the most famous predecessor to do this is probably Jonathan Lynn’s Clue , which was distributed to theaters with three different surprise endings. Clue , of course, was a financial failure (though admittedly deserving of its cult status ), so perhaps following this precedent was ultimately unwise for McG and Co., but let’s put it out there: Hollywood, why not try breaking the mold sometime? That said, there was another idea for concluding the film that would have defied Hollywood convention, story-wise. “There’s even an ending where the two boys end up in each other’s arms,” joked McG. “That should have been the ending,” added Hardy from across the podium. “It would have been a really groundbreaking ending! You should have gone for it, really gone for it.” “I know, I know,” McG answered. “I pussed out on the ending of Terminator 4 … so I should’ve gone for the dark ending of this one.” Stay tuned for more on This Means War to come in my forthcoming junket diary, posting next week… Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter .
