‘Iron Man 3’: Is The Mandarin An Extremist Fringe Republican?

A recent production still from Iron Man 3 shows that movie’s presumed main villain, the Mandarin , in a kind of evil Stevie Nicks “Stand Back” pose with what appears to be a translucent cape or tapestry draped from him.  And right now, I’m obsessed with the text that’s on it. Earlier this month, I wrote about director Shane Black ‘s comparison of Ben Kingsley’s character to Marlon Brando’s portrayal of Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now   as “a guy who’s gone off the reservation” and is “incorporating all these different symbols and iconography into his worldview.” The above photo offers some clues into that worldview, and despite Black’s comment (contained in that same post) about the Mandarin’s “obsession with Sun Tzu and ancient arts of warfare,” the writing on that cape points to the Bible and a bastardization of American capitalism. In other words, the Mandarin’s name may evoke the Far East, but, in the above photo, he’s surrounded by text and images more frequently associated with the far right. The Far East Vs. The Far Right Whether that fabric is an item of clothing or some type of banner,  aspects of it resemble the typeface and designs found on American dollars. Instead of “In God We Trust,” however, the Mandarin’s motto appears to be “In Chaos We Trust.”  There’s no clear depiction of that saying, but if you look at the circular design on the right side of the fabric, you can make out “In Chao…” while “Trust” can be seen on the circular design to the left.  (That’s assuming symmetry, by the way.) Is He Referencing The Bible?  Also, on the left side of the fabric is a partially obscured hand-scrawled phrase that appears to be “redeemed through blood” (and may be written in blood, given its color).  That phrase is commonly used in writings about the Bible and often refers back to the Tenth Book of the New Testament, Ephesians 1:7 : “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.” (That’s from  the   New American Standard Version of the good book. )   In its Biblical usage, the redemptive blood belongs to the martyred  Jesus Christ, but it’s unclear whether the Mandarin sees himself as a Christ figure or whether he’s twisted the phrase into something much more nefarious that requires a lot of blood to be spilled before his idea of redemption can occur. If there are any Marvel Comics-loving Biblical scholars or GOP pundits out there who can shed more light on these clues, please enlighten me in the comments section below. ‘Iron Man 3’ Director Spills On The Mandarin & He Sounds Like….Mike Ovitz?

If, like me, you’ve been spending way too much time puzzling over the international villain of mystery known as The Mandarin , I have some clues and an out-there theory. I’ll give you the information first. In an interview with Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige and Iron Man 3  d irector Shane Black that was posted Monday on Marvel.com , the two men shed a little bit more light on the character, played by Ben Kingsley .  In the Marvel Comics universe, the Mandarin is Chinese, but in the Marvel movie universe he’s more of an multicultural mutt, in part, because Asian audiences are so hugely important to tentpole movies today that no studio wants to risk offending a nation of 1.4 billion. (That’s almost 20 percent of the world’s population in pie-chart terms.) According to Feige, the Mandarin “is recognizable and frightening and fearful in a very sort of ripped-from-the-headlines, Osama Bin Laden sort of way.”  At the same time, he explained, Black, who directed Iron Man 3 and co-wrote the script with Drew Pearce saw him as analogous “to Marlon Brando’s character in Apocalypse Now , Colonel Kurtz. He was a guy who’s gone off the reservation, who’s incorporating all these different symbols and iconography into his worldview.” And here’s Black’s take from that same interview: “He represents every terrorist in a way, but he specifically has crafted himself in the manner of the Mandarin, of the warlord, and I think that’s great because you get to do the comic book [version of the villain], but yet you don’t have to deal with the specifics of the Fu Man Chu stereotyping. We aren’t saying he’s Chinese, we’re saying he, in fact, draws a cloak around himself of Chinese symbols and dragons because it represents his obsession with Sun Tzu and ancient arts of warfare that he has studied.” Which brings me to my theory. Black’s reference to Sun Tzu reminds me of another long-deposed warlord who cloaked himself in the words of that famous Chinese military strategist and The Art of War author: Creative Artists Agency co-founder Michael Ovitz, who once had much of Hollywood by the short hairs and did business out of an I.M. Pei-designed shrine to his success.  Black was a CAA client during the agency’s 1980s heyday, and some of the lines that the Mandarin utters in the last trailer, which I’ve posted below, could pass for agent speak. How do I know. Imagine Entourage ‘s Ari Gold saying: “Mr. Stark, today is the first day of what’s left of your life” or “Do you want an empty life or a meaningful death?” See what I mean? Yes, But What Does the First Photo from Iron Man 3 MEAN?

You may look at this first photo from the set of Iron Man 3 and think, “Gee, Tony Stark has a lot of toys.” I look at it — a shot of Robert Downey Jr. as Stark, gazing at his wall of Iron Man suits in a lab/Hall of Ego scattered with gadgets and gizmos aplenty — and remember I need to do laundry. Also, I need a bigger closet. Why does Tony Stark have so many wardrobe options? On the flip side, you could go way into depth surmising what all this hardware means, as EW’s Anthony Breznican does: It’s a big responsibility for whomever — we presume Stark’s automated butler JARVIS — to guard this stuff. Although Marvel Studios hasn’t released details of the plot, if you couple this official image with paparazzi shots last week revealing the Iron Patriot, a character using stolen Stark tech who literally wraps his armor in the flag to justify his actions, we may be seeing the issue of proliferation rising again for ol’ Tony. Sure, sure. But wait… what could this one face-obscured behind-the-scenes shot mean for the meaning of Iron Man 3 ? What comes next could be too powerful even for Stark to control. If rumors are true that Iron Man 3 filmmaker Shane Black ( Kiss Kiss Bang Bang ) is taking his cues from the Iron Man comic series Extremis , which deals with nanotechnology injected directly into human beings to make them more powerful, then it’s no longer a matter of who is inside the weapon than what kind of weapon is inside the person. And that next case on the wall, which looks eerily like a row of coffins now, would have to contain Tony Stark himself . WHOA. Way existential, man. Who agrees? Who’s excited? Who’s wondering if we’re really butt-gazing at RDJ’s stand-in while the real RDJ is over snacking at craft services? [ EW ]

Robert Downey Jr. Speculates Very, Very Vaguely About Iron Man 3

Robert Downey Jr. is not just a laudable actor who earned the coolest Oscar nomination of the past decade for his performance in Tropic Thunder ; he’s also a damn quotable person . But what happens when he’s asked to speak about Iron Man 3 , a film that Lethal Weapon writer/ Kiss Kiss Bang Bang director Shane Black hasn’t finished writing yet and comes out in May 2013? He’s not as revealing or candid (since, uh, there’s nothing to reveal). Instead, he says things like this.

Can You Honestly Tell the Difference Between Glee and Kidz Bop’s ‘Tik Tok’?

This Glee show that Julie likes is out of control. It’s unfunny, witlessly tone-shifty, and a pox on this Golden Age of Television that keeps happening. Also, the “music” is scathing! Case in point: In the musical preview for next week’s episode, we hear the show’s clear-best character Brittany lead Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok.” Compare that rendition to the Kidz Bop Kids version and tell me if there’s really any difference (besides the awesomely kid-friendly lyrics).

Fanboys Rejoice! Shane Black to Direct, Maybe Pen Iron Man 3

Writer-director Shane Black is reportedly in negotiations to direct Iron Man 3 , taking over from series helmer Jon Favreau for the threequel, which is already slated for release on May 3, 2013. But hey, no pressure! Two years should be plenty of time for the guy who wrote Lethal Weapon in six weeks. Besides, Black’s got plenty of qualifications that should inspire fanboy confidence. ‘Iron Man 3’ May Tap Shane Black As Director

Veteran screenwriter could take over franchise from departed Jon Favreau. By Eric Ditzian Shane Black Photo: SGranitz/WireImage One week after news first broke that Shane Black was a top candidate to helm “Iron Man 3” in the wake of Jon Favreau ‘s departure from the franchise, another report suggests the director is now in final negotiations to win the job.
