Fleetwood Mac Cancels Tour; John McVie Diagnosed With Cancer

Fleetwood Mac will be taking some time off following the sad news that bassist John McVie, 67, has been diagnosed with cancer and will receive treatment. The famous band announced on their official Facebook page Sunday that they will be canceling their upcoming 14 shows in Australia and New Zealand. The band said in a statement confirming the tour dates’ cancelation: “John McVie, one of the co-founding and original members of Fleetwood Mac is now scheduled to be in treatment for cancer during that period of time.” “We hope our Australian and New Zealand fans as well as Fleetwood Mac fans everywhere will join us in wishing John and his family all the best.” “We are sorry to not be able to play these dates.” Fleetwood Mac , comprised of McVie, Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood, recently wrapped up their successful European tour. The band’s New Zealand and Australia shows were originally scheduled through December 7, with a performance also set for Las Vegas on December 30. We wish John a fast and full recovery.

‘Iron Man 3’: Is The Mandarin An Extremist Fringe Republican?

A recent production still from Iron Man 3 shows that movie’s presumed main villain, the Mandarin , in a kind of evil Stevie Nicks “Stand Back” pose with what appears to be a translucent cape or tapestry draped from him.  And right now, I’m obsessed with the text that’s on it. Earlier this month, I wrote about director Shane Black ‘s comparison of Ben Kingsley’s character to Marlon Brando’s portrayal of Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now   as “a guy who’s gone off the reservation” and is “incorporating all these different symbols and iconography into his worldview.” The above photo offers some clues into that worldview, and despite Black’s comment (contained in that same post) about the Mandarin’s “obsession with Sun Tzu and ancient arts of warfare,” the writing on that cape points to the Bible and a bastardization of American capitalism. In other words, the Mandarin’s name may evoke the Far East, but, in the above photo, he’s surrounded by text and images more frequently associated with the far right. The Far East Vs. The Far Right Whether that fabric is an item of clothing or some type of banner,  aspects of it resemble the typeface and designs found on American dollars. Instead of “In God We Trust,” however, the Mandarin’s motto appears to be “In Chaos We Trust.”  There’s no clear depiction of that saying, but if you look at the circular design on the right side of the fabric, you can make out “In Chao…” while “Trust” can be seen on the circular design to the left.  (That’s assuming symmetry, by the way.) Is He Referencing The Bible?  Also, on the left side of the fabric is a partially obscured hand-scrawled phrase that appears to be “redeemed through blood” (and may be written in blood, given its color).  That phrase is commonly used in writings about the Bible and often refers back to the Tenth Book of the New Testament, Ephesians 1:7 : “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.” (That’s from  the   New American Standard Version of the good book. )   In its Biblical usage, the redemptive blood belongs to the martyred  Jesus Christ, but it’s unclear whether the Mandarin sees himself as a Christ figure or whether he’s twisted the phrase into something much more nefarious that requires a lot of blood to be spilled before his idea of redemption can occur. If there are any Marvel Comics-loving Biblical scholars or GOP pundits out there who can shed more light on these clues, please enlighten me in the comments section below. WATCH: ‘Sound City’ Trailer Offers Glimpse Of Dave Grohl’s Love Letter To Rock ‘N’ Roll’s Pre-Digital Era

Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl will make his directorial debut — and a smart tax write-off — at the Sundance Film Festival with the premiere of Sound City , a documentary about the legendary Van Nuys, California recording studio where Nirvana’s Nevermind , Neil Young’s After The Gold Rush and  Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours  were recorded among many influential classics . If you’re a Foo fan like me, or you saw Grohl’s controversial acceptance for Best Rock Performance at the 2012 Grammys, then you know the guy loves analog recording. As he said then, “It’s not about what goes on in a computer” that makes great rock ‘n’ roll but the “human element.” Well, he took a lot of crap for that speech, in part, because Foo Fighters’  Wasting Light album — which led to the Grammy — was recorded on all analog equipment but then went through a digital post-production process. But I have a feeling that Grohl will get his point across in Sound City , which tells the story of the funky studio with the magic vibe.  Sound City ceased to operate as a recording studio in 2011, but still houses sound stages. Grohl now owns the Neve 8028 analog recording console that was instrumental to its allure. I’m sure it helped him research the picture. Stevie Nicks on Nicki Minaj: Little Girl in Need of Choking!

It may be a feud concocted for ratings, but Stevie Nicks is taking the rivalry between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj VERY seriously. Asked about this supposed American Idol spat , the Fleetwood Mac singer made it quite clear on whose side she falls. “How dare this little girl!” Nicks said of Minaj. “If I had been Mariah I would have walked over to Nicki and strangled her to death right there.” Ironically, of course, Carey has alleged that Minaj actually threatened her life during a taping in Charlotte last week. “I would have killed her in front of all those people and had to go to jail for it,” added the fiery 64-year old artist. Damn. How does she really feel, we wonder?!? Whose side are you on in this feud?   Team Mariah Team Nicki View Poll »

‘Django Unchained’: Five Secrets From The Trailer

We’re just as obsessed with the sneak peek of Quentin Tarantino’s latest as you are. By Kevin P. Sullivan Jamie Foxx in “Django Unchained” Photo: Columbia Pictures The trailer for ” Django Unchained ” is finally here, and if you’re here, you’ve paused the trailer long enough to read this, so thank you. We here at MTV News are just as obsessed with the trailer for Quentin Tarantino ‘s long-awaited Southern, so we’ve put together the trailer commentary below, and if you’re looking for an even deeper dive, here are the five secrets of the “Django Unchained” trailer: What’s In A Name? Tarantino has always filled his movies with some subtle (and not so subtle) references to the movies he admires. The title character in “Django Unchained” owes his name to the rich legacy of other Djangos in film. The original Django appeared in an Italian-made Western from 1966 by director Sergio Corbucci. In the original “Django,” the character is a mysterious drifter who drags a coffin around with him wherever he goes. Naturally, the coffin contains a machine gun. Dozens of other films ripped off the film, trying to repeat the original by featuring a character with the same name, but Corbucci and star Franco Nero only made one other Django movie, a 1987 sequel called “Django 2: il grande ritorno.” The Hidden Gun This tricky little pistol shows up twice during the trailer, but expect to see a lot more of it in the actual film. A contraption used by Dr. King Schultz, the hidden gun retracts up into the wearer’s sleeve and pops out when needed for a surprising blast. The device shows up pretty regularly in Westerns, and it even makes an appearance in one of Tarantino’s favorite movies of all time, Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver.” The Leo Zoom-In The first time we see Leonardo DiCaprio , Tarantino does a jarring zoom-in on his smug, smiling face. The move comes straight out of the spaghetti Westerns that the style of “Django Unchained” pulls inspiration from. The most notable director of the genre, Sergio Leone, directed four of its most famous films: “Fistful of Dollars,” “For a Few Dollars More,” “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly,” and “Once Upon a Time in the West.” Tarantino has borrowed from Leone and the spaghetti Western aesthetic on other occasions, including nods in “Kill Bill” and “Inglourious Basterds.” Don Johnson The lucky journalists at Cannes who got a sneak preview of “Django Unchained” left the theater raving about the performance of ’80s TV star Don Johnson. He actually appears in the trailer, right around the two-minute mark, as the Colonel Sanders-esque gentleman on a horse. Johnson has found himself in a series of intriguing roles in recent years, appearing in “Machete” and “Eastbound and Down.” It’s safe to say that “Django Unchained” will continue that trajectory. Franco Nero Right at the end of the trailer, Tarantino throws in one last Easter egg for hard-core film fans. That man next to Jamie Foxx when he speaks the “D is silent” line? That’s Franco Nero, the original Django. Check out everything we’ve got on “Django Unchained.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Bob Welch, Ex-Fleetwood Mac Guitarist, Commits Suicide

Late musician also found success as a solo artist after leaving the band in 1974. By Kara Warner Fleetwood Mac’s Bob Welch Photo: Fin Costello/Redferns Bob Welch, a former member of Fleetwood Mac, was found dead in his home in Nashville on Thursday (June 7) from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. According to the Nashville police, Welch shot himself in the chest, and his body was discovered by his wife around noon. The police told WKRN-TV , Nashville’s local ABC station, that Welch had been suffering from health issues recently and that he left a suicide note. The Los Angeles-born guitarist joined Fleetwood Mac in 1971, when the band was beginning to evolve from its initial setup as a hard-edged British blues combo into a polished pop/rock act. Welch played guitar and contributed vocals on five Fleetwood Mac albums, Future Games, Bare Trees, Penguin, Mystery to Me and Heroes Are Hard to Find, the band’s first to crack the U.S. top 40. He was also responsible for penning two of the band’s early hits, “Sentimental Lady” and “Hypnotized.” Welch left the band after Heroes, an opening that paved the way for Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham to join, which re-energized the group and launched the band toward their long-desired commercial success and future Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 1998. After leaving the band in 1974, Welch later formed the British rock group Paris in 1976 and found success as a solo artist. His 1977 album, French Kiss, reached platinum status and spawned three hit singles: “Ebony Eyes,” “Hot Love, Cold World” and a re-recording of “Sentimental Lady,” on which Fleetwood Mac’s Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham provided backing vocals. Welch was 66. Share your condolences for Welch’s family and friends in the comments. Related Artists Fleetwood Mac
