The Black Keys Blast Berlin

Band shakes up Germany’s capital on Saturday night with blistering sold-out show. By James Montgomery The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach performs in Berlin on Saturday Photo: Jakubaszek/ Getty Images BERLIN — The Black Keys are not a particularly verbose band; they are, however, an incredibly voluminous one. That lesson was learned during their blistering sold-out show Saturday in Germany’s capital city, which was short on between-song banter — frontman Dan Auerbach offered just a few “All right, thank you so much”s and drummer Patrick Carney was basically mute (though he is pretty funny on Twitter) — and long on the kind of smash-n-bash blues/garage/soul that has become the Keys’ near-patented racket. Drawing heavily from their breakout Brothers album and the equally successful El Camino, the duo, aided by backing band for extra oomph, tore through 90-plus minutes of sweaty, snarling stuff, a full-bore workout for their triumphant run of U.S. arena shows, which kicks off in March. (MTV News was in Berlin to catch up with the Black Keys for a special event we can’t quite talk about just yet …) But on this night, they also seemed to take additional inspiration from the venue they were playing: the crumbling, cavernous Treptow Arena, whose brick-and-mortar shell doesn’t disguise the fact that it once was a bus depot, an industrial bent that suited the Keys’ Akron, Ohio, roots just fine (check their 2004 Rubber Factory album for proof). Auerbach’s drawl on “Howlin’ For You” seemed just a little more raw, the guitars on “Next Girl” and “Your Touch” roared with diesel-powered authority, and Carney’s pounding on “Girl is on My Mind” recalled a chortling 8-cylinder engine. In other words, the Black Keys seemed perfectly at home, even though they were anything but. New songs like “Gold on the Ceiling” and “Little Black Submarines” crackled with energy and attitude (Auerbach’s solos in the latter did both), and older tunes like “Hold Me in Your Arms” — which made an appearance during their extended, mid-set session as just a two-piece — was streaked with soul (and some serious riffs, too). “Lonely Boy” careened along on a surf-tinged backbeat and fuzzy, gut-box guitars; “Tighten Up” was the rare moment of pure-pop sheen; and “Ten Cent Pistol” simmered with a smoky, sexy tension. All of those moments were positively devoured by the German crowd, 9,000 hearty souls who queued up around the block hours before doors opened, and fended off some seriously frigid temperatures — and snow — with beery cheer. (Germany has some rather lax open-container laws, to say the very least.) But they took that frenzy to an even higher level during the Keys’ encore, helping Auerbach hit the high notes on the swoony “Everlasting Light” (which was powered not only by the band, but a truly epic disco ball dangling overhead) and leaping for joy during “I Got Mine,” which extended into a ringing, reverbed jam before winding to a close. Of course, at the end, Auerbach simply thanked the crowd, Carney chucked his drumsticks into the audience, and the band exited stage right. The Black Keys may not be big on making speeches, but they don’t have to be. On most nights — this one included, far from home but still swaggering — they get by on raw power alone. Mac Miller Returns To Pittsburgh’s Blue Slide Park

Miller gives MTV News a tour of the ‘illest city in the world,’ including the park he made famous. By Rob Markman Mac Miller Photo: David Wolff-Patrick/Redferns PITTSBURGH — Some call it Steel City, others call it the City of Bridges, but Mac Miller simply calls his hometown “the illest city in the world.” After releasing his 2010 mixtape K.I.D.S., Miller set out and toured the world, spending more and more time away from home. It was that time away that inspired the name for Mac’s debut album , Blue Slide Park. Named after his favorite childhood hangout, Mac aimed to shine the spotlight on his city. After months of touring in 2011, the “Knock, Knock” MC invited MTV News to come out to a pair of homecoming shows back in December and gave us a tour of the ‘Burgh, starting, of course, with Blue Slide Park, a playground tucked inside the much-larger Frick Park. “Welcome to the world-famous Blue Slide Park,” Mac told MTV News, acting as our tour guide. If you aren’t from the ‘Burgh, chances are you didn’t quite catch the significance of BSP ‘s opening track, “English Lane,” but after a trip to the real-life playground, it all starts to make sense. “I was literally walking to Blue Slide Park and the album was almost done and I was walking to get some last-minute inspiration,” Mac said, explaining how the park’s adjacent street became the title for the #1 LP’s first song. “I walked by and was like, ‘English Lane would be an ill title for a song, that’s how I wanna open the album ,with a song called ‘English Lane,’ ‘ because that’s how you walk up to Blue Slide Park.” Granted, some of the scenery has changed, for instance, the slide isn’t quite as blue these days. “When I announced that I was coming out with an album called Blue Slide Park, some vandalizing kids dumped a bucket of red paint down the slide,” the 20-year old rapper said with some disappointment. Still, while walking through the famed playground and its surrounding area, the memories began to mount for Mac. There were his baseball days at Stan Lederman Field and the make-out sessions that followed his little league victories. “I was into girls in the fifth grade,” Mac said while showing off a low-key cove where he’d take his junior high school honeys. Now, when the breakout rap star returns to his old stomping grounds, word spreads quickly as fans flock to the neighborhood hangout in hopes for an autograph or a picture with Miller. Still, it all provides a certain comfort. Back in July, after Mac first announced the album’s title , he explained what it all meant to MTV News. “No matter what happens in life, no matter where you go, where you’re off to, what happens with the park, that slide will always be blue. That will always be Blue Slide Park no matter what,” he said. “You can go to New York and live for 10 years and become a huge business mogul and then come back to the ‘Burgh and no matter how much money you got, that slide is still blue.” Barring any vandals, of course. Check in with MTV News everyday this week as Mac Miller takes us back to the ‘Burgh and spotlights Pittsburgh vibrant hip-hop scene. Also tune into to ‘RapFix Live’ on Wednesday to see exclusive behind the scenes footage from Mac’s pair of December homecoming shows. Mac Miller Racks Up Huge Wins In His Breakthrough Year

Blue Slide Park MC earns a spot on MTV News’ 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC list — vote now! By Rob Markman Mac Miller showed promise when he dropped his attention-grabbing K.I.D.S. (Kickin’ Incredibly Dop Sh–) mixtape in 2010, and throughout 2011, the Pittsburgh MC has fully capitalized on his rap buzz, proving that he is a musical force to be reckoned with. Now Miller, who, as an independent artist, earned the #1 album in the country when he dropped Blue Slide Park last month, stands as one of the nominees in MTV News’ list of 2011’s Hottest Breakthrough MCs . After deciding he wanted to be an MC at 15, Mac used hip-hop influences like Big L, OutKast and A Tribe Called Quest as well as rock greats like the Beatles, Sublime and the Red Hot Chili Peppers to craft his sound. “My whole thing is being super genuine and being myself,” Mac told MTV News. “Being an MC is a huge part of who I am, but it’s also that other stuff too, like playing instruments and getting into music like that.” There was some early work as part of local group Ill Spoken, but when Miller dropped K.I.D.S. right after graduating from high school, things really began to take off. Anchored by party tracks like “Knock, Knock” and the Lord Finesse-nod “Kool-Aid & Frozen Pizza,” the Rostrum Records spitter started to rack up a series of wins, including his sold-out Incredibly Dope Tour and his appearance on XXL magazine’s 2011 Freshman cover. His next mixtape, Best Day Ever, surprised K.I.D.S. in terms of download numbers, and his first EP, On and On, proved that Mac Miller fans not only would download free projects from the 19-year-old rapper, they’ll also pay for product. Then Mac did the unthinkable when his debut album Blue Slide Park was finally released on November 8, 2011. After selling more than 144,000 copies, BSP became the first indie debut to hit #1 on the Billboard albums chart since 1995’s Dogg Food by Tha Dogg Pound. The album’s accompanying tour was a success as well, selling out every stop along the way. Yes, 2011 may have been his breakout year, but considering all of his accomplishments, Mac Miller is doing better than some vets in the industry. Still, does he have what it takes to win MTV News’ 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MCs contest? Only time will tell. Hottest Breakthrough MCs was established by MTV News in 2010 as a fan-driven initiative that spotlights, celebrates and cultivates new talent. MTV News chose a pool of young rappers and urged fans to vote for their favorite. When it was all said and done, Wiz Khalifa emerged as the Hottest Breakthrough of last year. The competition was tough, but the Taylor Gang General beat out runner-up Nicki Minaj, ATL group Travis Porter, Diggy Simmons and J. Cole. This year, you can vote for Machine Gun Kelly (or your favorite up-and-comer) over at RapFix.MTV.com , and be sure to check back for daily updates and poll results. Each day, we’ll spotlight a new Hottest Breakthrough MC before we conclude on December 13 when the polls close at 11:59 p.m. ET. The 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC will be revealed during December 14’s “RapFix Live,” during which the winner will appear as our in-studio guest. There will also be a special announcement about MTV News’ upcoming Hottest MCs in the Game list and debate. To be considered a Hottest Breakthrough MC, an artist cannot have released a major-label full-length album. Finalists from 2010’s Hottest Breakthrough MCs poll will not be eligible for 2011 consideration, so unfortunately, Diggy Simmons and Travis Porter won’t be part of this conversation. Who do you think should be 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC? Share your picks in the comments! Stick with MTV News as we profile the 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MCs before announcing the winner December 13 on “RapFix Live” — vote now! Mac Miller To Drop LP Early If Fans Nab 100,000 Pre-Orders

If Mac gets 50,000 pre-orders, Blue Slide Park rapper will donate $50,000 to Make-A-Wish Foundation. By Rob Markman Mac Miller Photo: MTV News Mac Miller sure is impatient. Yes, he has already secured a November 8 release date for his independent debut album, Blue Slide Park, but that isn’t enough for the Pittsburgh MC. With the album now available for pre-order on iTunes and other digital outlets, the “Donald Trump” rapper has devised a three-tier plan that will give his fans the ability to push up the 16-track LP’s release. “I want to get my fans my album. We have a date, November 8. Blue Slide Park, it’s coming out, but I would love it if we could get it out earlier,” Mac told MTV News. “So what we’re doing is, we’re gonna go hard with the pre-orders.” The expectations are high, but if Mac can get 25,000 pre-orders of BSP he will release the album’s title track to hold fans over. If Miller surpasses 50,000 pre-orders before the album drops, he will donate $50,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Reaching 25,000 or 50,000 won’t be easy, but should Blue Slide Park hit 100,000 pre-orders before November 8, Mac promises to release the album immediately. If they got 100,000 by the end of this interview, the album would come out right after, Miller promised. “I just want people to get the album as quickly as possible,” he said. “So if they go hard and go crazy — ’cause you never know what my fans will do, they’re so unpredictable — if they go hard and get 100,000 and make history, I’m just gonna give them the album right away because that’s what they deserve and that’s what they would deserve anyway.” Miller is currently on tour in support of the album, which he has dedicated to his favorite childhood park, known most for its blue slides. “Blue Slide Park is a park in Pittsburgh we grew up at,” Miller told MTV News about the album title’s significance. “Being 2, going down slides and then being 6, playing Little League and hanging out there, then being older, coming back there to drink and smoke and party, running from the cops. And now going back there just to chill out and drink a beer.” Will you pre-order Mac Miller’s Blue Slide Park ? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Mac Miller
