Russian Player Goes Unpunished In ‘Sportsmanship’ Double Standard That Probably Would Have Gotten Serena Fined

More:

T here appeared to be a double standard in tennis officiating after a Russian player went unpunished for unsportsmanlike conduct that, if history was any indication, officials would have likely admonished Serena Williams for displaying. See Also: Australian Paper With Racist Cartoon Of Serena Williams Says It Has ‘Nothing To Do With Race’ In a video making the rounds on social media,  Sloane Stephens called out her opponent, Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova , for apparently committing multiple violations of tennis decorum during their heated first-round China Open match on Sunday in Beijing. The instance that caught everyone’s attention happened in the third set, when it appeared that Pavlyuchenkova tried to hit Stephens with an overhead smash near the net. In tennis, “A player who hits the opponent while legitimately trying to return a ball to the opponent should not be penalized,” according to the U.S. Tennis Association guidelines for “officiating scenarios and interpretations.” But to the naked eye, Pavlyuchenkova’s intent was clear. “That f*king b*tch tried to hit me,” Stephens could be seen saying to herself as she returned to the baseline. Stephens had a good reason to suspect that the Russian player tried to hit her because the overhead shot came after they had a hot verbal exchange . Neither normally confrontational players. pic.twitter.com/LCfM1Cr1b7 — Ben Rothenberg (@BenRothenberg) September 30, 2018 In addition to the aforementioned guidelines, tennis has long prided itself as a sport for ladies and gentlemen with an unwritten code of behavior that the Russian player clearly violated. It’s courteous to apologize for near miss or hitting your opponent with the ball. Williams was not granted the same benefit of the doubt during her U.S. Open match in September. She was fined a total of $17,000 for three code violations, including breaking her racket, instead of being issued the required warnings. Chair umpire Jenny Zhang ’s silence at the overhead shot and Pavlyuchenkova’s other antics was deafening. Zhang also overlooked the timing of Pavlyuchenkova calling a trainer to the court to treat her right shoulder. It’s frowned upon to ask for a timeout right before an opponent is ready to serve. Since Zhang declined to at least warn the Russian player, Stephens was compelled to speak up for herself. “That’s the sport we play. Right? Sportsmanship. That’s really important,” Stephens told the umpire while walking back to her seat. In the end, Stephens went on to win the match, anyway. Makin It Rain On Them Hoes (AGAIN): Serena Williams Wins The French Open While Suffering From The Flu!!!

Serena Williams Captures 20th Grand Slam With French Open Win, Closes In On Graf’s Record Let’s hear it for our girl! Serena Williams has won another major today with her French Open victory over Lucie Safarova. According to CNN reports : Despite being sapped by a nasty flu for much of the last week, the American beat Lucie Safarova 6-3 6-7 (2) 6-2 to win the French Open on Saturday and claim a landmark 20th major. “It seems a little bit like a dream,” Williams told reporters. “Like, is this really my life? Is this really happening right now? So yeah, it’s really kind of weird.” Heading into Saturday, it looked as if Williams might be vulnerable against Safarova, the 13th seed who was making her debut in a grand slam final. Williams said via a question-and-answer session released by the tournament Friday she had been suffering from the flu and “collapsed” after her draining, comeback victory in three sets in the semifinals against Timea Bacsinszky. She didn’t practice Friday, either, opting to stay at her apartment in Paris and rest. “She had so much fever,” said Mouratoglou. “She stayed in bed the whole day. She tried to walk a little bit. It wasn’t brilliant so she came back.” The Frenchman added that on Saturday her condition improved and the fever disappeared. “I hit a little bit today in the morning and I hit them pretty well,” said Williams. “I was just like, ‘Okay, I have been playing for over 30 years, I know I can at least play tennis.’ After that I just went out to play a match.” When Williams went off court just before the final was about to begin, a dramatic afternoon seemed on the cards. It ended up that way, though no one would have predicted it when Williams surged to a huge lead in the second set. Rallying from a set down to overcome Anna-Lena Friedsam, Victoria Azarenka, Sloane Stephens and then Bacsinszky, overturning a 2-0 deficit in the third was merely child’s play for Williams. Of the seven majors they’ve won together in three years, Mouratoglou said this year in Paris marked Williams’ second-most difficult path to glory behind Wimbledon in 2012. Williams, meanwhile, said it topped her entire list. “Here it was very difficult because she was very sick,” said Mouratoglou. “She was without energy in matches, and to find the energy, she found emotions that were very deep.” Congratulations Serena! We couldn’t be more proud. This French Open win makes 20 master wins for Serena overall. Everyone is talking about how close Serena is to surpassing Steffi Graf’s 22 master wins. Do you think she’ll do it this year? APImages

A “Lil Positivity”: Woman Rescued From Collapsed Bangladesh Factory After Surviving 17 Days Under Rubble!

This is truly a blessing. A woman survived 17 days under the rubble of a Bangladesh factory building where over 1,000 people were killed . Via NY Daily News reports : A seamstress buried in the wreckage of a collapsed garment factory building for 17 days was rescued Friday, a miraculous moment set against a scene of unimaginable horror, where the death toll shot past 1,000. Reshma survived, in remarkably good shape, by eating dried food that was in her area and drinking spare amounts of water with her. She was discovered on the second floor of the eight-story Rana Plaza building, where crews have been focused on recovering bodies, not rescuing survivors, for much of the past two weeks. “I heard voices of the rescue workers for the past several days. I kept hitting the wreckage with sticks and rods just to attract their attention,” she told the private Somoy TV from her hospital bed as doctors and nurses milled about, giving her saline and checking her condition. “No one heard me. It was so bad for me. I never dreamed I’d see the daylight again,” she said. “There was some dried food around me. I ate the dried food for 15 days. The last two days I had nothing but water. I used to drink only a limited quantity of water to save it. I had some bottles of water around me,” she said. Once Reshma finally got their attention, the crews ordered the cranes and bulldozers to immediately stop work and used handsaws and welding and drilling equipment to cut through the iron rod and debris still trapping her. They gave her water, oxygen and saline as they worked to free her. When Reshma was freed after 40 minutes, the crowd erupted in wild cheers. She was rushed to a military hospital in an ambulance, but her rescuers said she was in shockingly good condition, despite her ordeal. Abdur Razzak, a warrant officer with the military’s engineering department who first spotted her in the wreckage, said she could even walk. “She was fine, no injuries. She was just trapped. The space was wide,” said Lt. Col. Moyeen, an army official at the scene. Reshma told her rescuers there were no more survivors in her area. Workers began tearing through the nearby rubble anyway, hoping to find another person alive. “Reshma told me there were three others with her. They died. She did not see anybody else alive there,” said Maj. Gen. Chowdhury Hasan Suhrawardy, the head of the local military units. “We will continue our search until a survivor or a dead body is there.” The woman survived for more than two weeks in temperatures that touched the mid 90s (mid 30s Celsius). She scrounged for whatever food she could find, Suhrawardy said. Then, when the workers with bulldozers and cranes got close to the area where she was trapped, she took a still pipe and began banging it to attract attention, Razzak said. The workers ran into the dark rubble, eventually getting flashlights, to free her, he said. Reshma’s mother and her sister, Asma, rushed to the hospital to meet her. Hundreds of people who had been engaged in the grim job of removing decomposing bodies from the site raised their hands together in prayer for her survival. “Allah, you are the greatest, you can do anything. Please allow us all to rescue the survivor just found,” said a man on a loudspeaker leading the supplicants. “We seek apology for our sins. Please pardon us, pardon the person found alive.” Workers at the site had been clearing the rubble since the collapse April 24. More than 2,500 people were rescued in the immediate aftermath of the disaster. However, no survivors had been found in the wreckage since April 28, when Shahin Akter was found amid the wreckage. As workers tried to free her, a fire broke out and she died of smoke inhalation. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, called Reshma in the hospital, and the rescued woman began crying on the phone, Suhrawardy said. She told Hasina: “I am fine, please pray for me,” he said. It’s truly a miracle Reshma survived, we pray that she is able to overcome the trauma from her experience. The government has been under extreme criticism over the conditions of their garment industry. With two major disasters striking this month, clearly some changes need to be made. Our prayers are with those affected by this terrible disaster. Hit the flip for a pretty disturbing image from the collapse. SkyNews
