Curren$y Echoes Jay-Z’s Classic Debut, Ski Beatz Says

‘ Pilot Talk 1 and 2 are like the Reasonable Doubt s of this time,’ producer tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Ski Beatz Photo: MTV News Behind the Beats: Ski Beatz Ski Beatz knows talent when he sees it. Early in his career, the platinum producer from North Carolina also doubled as an MC in the 1990s group Original Flavor, but after meeting a young, fast-rapping Jay-Z, he decided to put down the mic and pick up producing full time. He hasn’t looked back, crafting fan-favorite tracks for the likes of Hov, Camp Lo, Talib Kweli, Lil Kim and Curren$y . These days, it’s the New Orleans spitta who has him most excited. “I feel like the albums I did with Curren$y — Pilot Talk 1 and 2 — are like the Reasonable Doubt s of this time,” Ski told Mixtape Daily . Comparing Curren$y to Jay might seem like a stretch, but having produced four tracks on Jigga’s classic debut, Ski has enough experience with both artists to draw the educated parallel. “The music that I chose and gave Curren$y is timeless music; it’s gonna be around,” Ski explained. “Older people listen to Curren$y because the beats — it kinda takes them back. But younger cats listen to it because of the lyrical content and the flows; because they are able to relate to what Curren$y is talking about. “That’s how it was with Jay: The music that we chose was kinda older-sounding music, but the lyrics was now.” For Ski, meeting Jay was life-changing. It was Brooklyn’s DJ Clark Kent who introduced the two when he brought Jay to an Original Flavor video shoot. Dame Dash, who managed Ski and Original Flavor at the time, also was impressed by the up-and-coming Jigga. Together with Kareem “Biggs” Burke, Dame and Jay would go on to start Roc-A-Fella Records. Ski just wanted to make their beats. “Jay rhymed, and at the moment when I heard him rhyme, I was like, ‘This dude gotta get on one of our songs,’ ” Ski remembered. “He was dope! He was the best rapper I’ve ever heard in my life. “He got on [Original Flavor’s] ‘Can I Get Open,’ and after that, me, personally, I decided to stop rapping and just start producing him solely.” Ski eventually would move on from working with Roc-A-Fella. According to the producer, he wanted to build his own Roc-A-Blok production company. Ski would build his discography with Camp Lo, Sporty Thievz and Pittsburgh Slim. He has recently hooked up with Dame Dash again, and put out his 24 Hour Karate School compilation in 2010 and its sequel, 24 Hour Karate School Part 2, in August. The new volume features Freddie Gibbs, L.E.P. Bogus Boys and Maybach Music Group signee Stalley. The previous album boasted features from Jay Electronica, the Cool Kids, Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y and Smoke Dza. While nothing can top working with Jay-Z, for Ski, these days it’s about discovering what’s new. “I love being able to still be relevant and being able to work with these cats: the Wiz Khalifas, the Smoke Dzas, the Dom Kennedys,” he said. Smoke DZA Dubs Curren$y, Big K.R.I.T. Rap’s ‘New Elite’

Harlem rapper also names Kendrick Lamar, Dom Kennedy and himself, in Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Smoke DZA Photo: MTV News Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Headliner : Smoke DZA Album : Rolling Stoned Key Cameo : “On the Corner” (featuring Bun B and Big K.R.I.T.) Real Spit : Jay-Z, Kanye West and Lil Wayne are already established — not just as hip-hop stars, but as modern-day musical icons whose reach extends to fans outside of rap as well. In hip-hop’s underground, however, new stars are emerging for a new generation; Harlem rapper Smoke DZA dubs them “the new elite.” While artists like Curren$y, Big K.R.I.T., Kendrick Lamar and Dom Kennedy are breaking through with mixtapes, independent albums and multi-city tours, DZA feels right there among that crop. He’s even nabbed them all for guest features on his debut indie album Rolling Stoned. “I feel like I’m amongst the elite, and I feel like they are the elite — like the Spittas, Big K.R.I.T., Kendrick, Dom,” Smokey told Mixtape Daily. “That’s the new crop of the elite right now, and just to be amongst them, I’m in a good space.” DZA first made a name for himself in 2004 as a part of the duo Smoke & Numbers, but he split from the group and decided to go solo. In 2009, Smokey re-emerged by himself on Substance Abuse, followed in 2010 with George Kush Da Button. Both projects contained original music and were presented as free Internet albums — though some still labeled them as mixtapes. “Mixtapes to me was like rapping over other people’s beats, so when I really started doin’ the whole pattern of rappin’ over my own beats, I took the whole approach as it being an album,” DZA explained of his approach. “But I always called it a mixtape because it was free. Rappin’ over other people’s beats, I feel like that’s a mixtape, and when you’re rapping over your own original production, it’s more so like an album.” While he was on the road with Big K.R.I.T. on the Mississippi rapper’s Return of 4eva Tour, DZA recorded THC (The Hustler’s Catalog), but it is Rolling Stoned that he counts as his true debut. ” THC was an acronym for ‘The Hustler’s Catalog,’ and I was just telling tales of what I seen or been through on wax,” he said. “So that was just the beginning of the hustle for Smokey, and now Rolling Stoned, it’s a combination of George Kush, Substance Abuse, THC, everything, but with a new output of what I’m doing. Like, bigger production, and I’m working with my peers, so I’m excited about that.” Aside from the “new elite,” Smoke also collaborated with veteran rapper Bun B for “On the Corner.” It was that feature which meant most to him. “That’s the OG of the cool table,” DZA said of the UGK legend. “When the OG gives you the rub, it’s like, what more can you say? It was just an honor and a pleasure working with Bun, and I hope we can do that again.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Smoke DZA Calls His Solo Success ‘A Blessing’

Harlem MC ditches his street ways for a hip-hop hustle, in Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Smoke DZA Photo: Courtesy of Smoke DZA Fire Starter: Smoke DZA Harlem rapper Smoke DZA is experiencing an all-time high, thanks to the change in his hustle-heavy lifestyle. He’s currently on the road with Big K.R.I.T. on the Cinematic/ Def Jam rapper’s Return of 4eva Tour and has also recently released his third solo Internet album THC (The Hustler’s Catalog), but his future didn’t always look so bright. “I’m really talking about the game — the other side and past stuff that I’ve been through in the street,” DZA said of the subject matter on THC. “Just being able to talk about that right now and not talk about that [from jail] is a blessing, because it could have went a different way.” Smoke may have started out on the street hustling, but rap proved to be his true calling. He started his career as one-half of the local New York rap duo Smoke & Numbers in 2004, but split from the group, went solo and dropped Substance Abuse in 2009. DZA followed the next year with his follow-up project George Kush Da Button. It was George Kush that made Smoke a fan favorite and got him the exposure needed to take his show on the road. In 2010, DZA embarked on Curren$y’s Smoker’s Club Tour, a 40-city trek that also included artists such as Big K.R.I.T. and Dom Kennedy. ” George Kush was the beginning of what you are seeing now,” DZA said. Now, with THC, Smokey seems to have really hit his stride. The album, which is available as a free download on his website , features lyrical contributions from other notable rap rooks like Kendrick Lamar (“Uptown 81”) and Kid Daytona (“Cool Sh–“), as well as beats from Hit-Boy and the highly demanded Lex Luger (“Loaded”). Building a foundation was key, and now Smoke said he’s booked for shows throughout the year, including K.R.I.T.’s current Return of 4eva run and another tour with Curren$y next month. Still, DZA, who is independently signed to Cinematic Music Group, isn’t about to let his life on the road interfere with his recording process. The marijuana-influenced MC is looking to drop Substance Abuse 2 as a retail release in September and another untitled project at the end of the year. Things have been going so well for Smoke, he intends to remain independent for as long as he can. “I like the independent route right now because I get to keep all of my bread and don’t have to cut nobody in,” he said. “I would love to get under that [major label] machine someday when the situation is right, but right now, I feel like being independent is the best way for me.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .
