Voltaic Systems Launches Slick Stand-Alone Solar Chargers

Images via Voltaic Systems We usually hear about new solar-charging bags from Voltaic Systems, known for its very high quality backpacks, laptop cases and messenger bags. However, the company is bringing us something new — stand-alone chargers. They have three new models available, each boasting about four times the charging power of most solar chargers out there on the market. Voltaic states they can charge a smartphone in just 4-5 hours of direct sunlight, which is a fast charge by any account. It seems we might finally have small, personal chargers that make practical sense. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

A Place For Everything in The Minimalist Magdelena Gravity Kitchen

Taking minimalism to the limit, designer Burkhard Schäller has reduced the kitchen to bent wire with a place for everything. And if somebody gives you a weenie roaster you can give it right back, because if it isn’t in the design there is nowhere to put it. That puts an end to clutter…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

More Pumped Hydro Storage Could Help Wind & Solar Power

Photo: PG&E Currently the Largest-Scale Form of Grid Storage Available Last week, California’s PG&E filed a request with regulators to study the feasibility of building a new “pumped hydro storage” facility in the Mokelumne River watershed in Amador County. It would store energy by pumping water from a low reservoir to another one that is at a higher elevation. This is done when there’s a surplus of energy, such as when the wind is blowing hard at night, for example. Then when you need the energy, you open up the valves and let the water run through turbines like any other hydro station…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Ducklings in Danger! Habitat Destruction Weakening Baby Birds (Video)

Photo via brendan.lally…away As habitat loss causes bird species to fly farther from the nest to forage, in turn forcing longer stretches of time between a mother’s time incubating her eggs, researchers are finding the health of the species on the whole can decline. A study done on wood ducks shows that when mothers are forced to stay away from their nests longer to feed, even the slightest drop in temperature can cause problems in the development and vitality of the hatchlings. The findings could reveal dire news for birds who have to choose betwee… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Self-Cleaning Solar Panels From Mars Find Their Way to Earth

Photo: NASA Who Knew Deserts Were Dusty? Dust is annoying enough to clean in my small apartment, I can’t imagine the headaches that it must give the owners of large solar farms. Dusty solar panels capture fewer photons and thus produce less power, so keeping them clean is important. Thankfully for solar developers, help is coming… all the way from Mars!… Read the full story on TreeHugger
