Carbon-Neutral Sail-Powered Cargo Ships Scheduled to Return to European Waters in 2012

image: B9 Energy What comes after fossil fuel powered containers shipping is a pet topic of mine to contemplate and a new story from CNN on what the folks at B9 Energy (primarily a wind power company…) are planning in the way of carbon-neutral three-masted cargo ships is really pretty inspiring–even if some of the react and contextual quotes in the article show a decided lack of vision. But the ultra-cool you’ve got to go backward to progress cargo ship first…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Weekday Vegetarian: A Butternut Squash Galette for Thanksgiving

Photo: Kelly Rossiter A lot of good cooks find making pastry a daunting proposition, but this galette is very forgiving. The rustic appearance is part of the charm of a galette so you don’t have to worry about how the pastry looks. This delicious savoury pie was a perfect addition to the big Thanksgiving meal …. Visions Statements Are Not Enough. Backcasting a Pathway to Sustainability.

Image credit: WTL Photos , used under Creative Commons license. I’ve never liked vision statements. All too often they smack of wishful thinking and fantasy. Yet the environmental movement is rife with them. As I have argued many times before, the green movement needs a concrete plan , and that plan needs to embrace strategic thinking … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Can Big Society Save the Planet, and Squash Big Government Too?

Image credit: Conservative Home I’ve always found the assertion that all environmentalists are socialist a little hard to swallow. I know plenty of conservatives who love the natural world and abhor waste. And I know plenty of radical greens whose anti-authoritarian, DIY streak puts them in direct conflict with any “big government” solutions from the traditional left. This very debate is flourishing right now over in the UK, with the

Clayton’s i-house 2.0: Reading Between The Lines To Find The Future Of Prefab

Preston at Jetson Green shows us Clayton Homes’ i-house 2.0, a larger version of their green modern prefab introduced two years ago (and seen in TreeHugger here ). It is a handsome design, beautifully presented. But while Preston says that “I-house has been insanely popular”, another source noted in the spring that “Apparently, Clayton’s hotcakes are sti… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Peak Oil Alarm Raised By Secret Government Talks

Image credit: AZrainman Could government finally be waking up to the threat of peak oil? When a government minister attended a peak oil conference as a “keynote listener” , I perhaps unkindly cited it as evidence that miracles do happen. But despite warnings of peak oil in 5 years from Richard Branson , there’s no doubt that governments the world over have not so far devoted too much attention to peak … Read the full story on TreeHugger

More Pumped Hydro Storage Could Help Wind & Solar Power

Photo: PG&E Currently the Largest-Scale Form of Grid Storage Available Last week, California’s PG&E filed a request with regulators to study the feasibility of building a new “pumped hydro storage” facility in the Mokelumne River watershed in Amador County. It would store energy by pumping water from a low reservoir to another one that is at a higher elevation. This is done when there’s a surplus of energy, such as when the wind is blowing hard at night, for example. Then when you need the energy, you open up the valves and let the water run through turbines like any other hydro station…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

New Honeybee Breed Key to Combating Colony Collapse Disorder

Image via Fast Company A British beekeeper has been working on creating a new strain of honeybee resistant to the varroa mite, a prime suspect in colony collapse disorder (CCD), and it looks like he’s hit a high note after 18 years of careful observation and selective breeding. Ron Hoskins found that bees in one of his hives figured out what a great idea mutual grooming can be — they learned to clean the mites off one another. Hoping that this learned behavior is hereditary, he spread the genes of bees from this colony t… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Inspiring Film: Uniting Government Policy With Grassroots Action (Video)

Image credit: Low Carbon Communities Challenge Even conservatives cheered when one Transition Town received a huge Government check , and with good reason. As part of the massive Low Carbon Communities Challenge the idea, for once, was to explore how grassroots groups could work together with Government, rather than the usual false choice between either top-down or bottom-up approaches to sustainability. I’ve just come acr… Read the full story on TreeHugger
