Kathy Bates, an Oscar winner for the 1991 film Misery and multiple-time Emmy nominee, revealed today that she was diagnosed with breast cancer a few weeks ago and recently underwent a double mastectomy in her battle against the disease. “Luckily, I don’t have to undergo radiation or chemo,” Bates said in a statement. “My family call me Kat because I always land on my feet and thankfully this is no exception… My doctors have assured me I’m going to be around for a long time. I’m looking forward to getting back to work doing what I love to do.” Bates was also diagnosed with ovarian cancer nine years ago. She has a busy professional future ahead of her, beginning on September 23 Emmy Awards where the veteran star is actually nominated in two categories: Outstanding actress in a drama ( Harry’s Law ) and outstanding guest actress in a comedy ( Two and a Half Men ). We wish her a full recovery.
Troubled Teen Mom cast member Amber Portwood stated the obvious in a statement from jail in which she said she is not normal – and needs to grow up. Two weeks after the Teen Mom finale , she issued remarks from prison to coincide with the eunion special that aired Tuesday night on MTV with Dr. Drew. In it, she talked about how she “got lost” in drugs and alcohol. Amber Portwood, now serving a five-year sentence, writes: “Right now I’m trying to figure out what I’m doing with my life. I guess I just got lost. I went to jail because I had an addiction to opiates.” “You live and you learn and that’s what’s real. “It was time for me to stop partying and realize that even though I’m 21, I’m not a normal 21-year-old.” “I’m a mother. I have to grow up quicker and start acting like a mother .” No arguments here, even though Portwood’s voluntarily decision to serve out a five-year term in jail rather than comply with a court-ordered drug program is dubious. After violating her probation stemming from a December 2011 arrest for drug possession, Amber’s behind bars for a LONG time, but says it’s for the best. “My No. 1 priority right now in life is dedicating my life to being sober, to being a sober person,” she writes, adding that she’s doing it for Leah , 3. “[I want] to show my daughter that people make mistakes but you can always come back. If Leah learns anything from me she should see how becoming a teen mom can change you. How everything is postponed,” Portwood said. She also hopes people learn from her mistakes. “We made the show for a reason…some decisions change your whole life. If you don’t want to take responsibility and use protection, don’t have sex.” “One night can change your whole life into a sad story,” noted Portwood, adding that the “mean person” viewers see on Teen Mom is far from reality. “I want to show everybody I can do it and can start living a straight life and getting my family back in order,” she concluded, and we wish her the best.
We recently said Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively may be the hottest couple ever. Ryan Lochte and Olivia Culpo (Miss USA!) might give them a run for their money. If they’re even a couple, of course. The Olympic swimming stud and reigning beauty queen were spotted at New York’s Fashion Week together. #JEAH! Ryan Lochte and Olivia Culpo continued the night together at NYC hotspot 1Oak where they were seen sitting and chatting at a table around 1 a.m. According to news reports, the not-unattractive duo met last Wednesday at shoe designer Brian Atwood’s party at the Four Seasons restaurant. Hopefully Ryan’s not just rebounding now that his crush Blake – who he wanted to cameo on Gossip Girl just to meet – is off the market for good. Either way, Olivia’s hardly a consolation prize. She’s Miss USA, people! What do you think … do they make a cute couple? Lochtulpo? Rylivia? [Photos: WENN.com]
The King lives! Just a couple days after suffering a heart attack while broadcasting Monday Night Raw , WWE veteran Jerry Lawler is progressing very well. “[Jerry] is hooked up to tubes and is still not able to speak,” son Kevin Lawler tells TMZ. “But he’s writing stuff on a notepad to talk to people… Not just brief notes, but detailed stories which show he knows where he is and what is going on.” That’s very good to hear, especially as Kevin confirms the family was concerned Jerry had suffered brain damage to the amount of time he was unconscious and not breathing backstage. The 62-year old remains in the hospital and it’s unclear when he will be let out. We send him our very best and hope he finally retires from the ring after this scare.
Watch out for curry-laden ricochets! Image credit: Kalebeul. This is one of those classic good news / bad news stories which makes you wonder if the scientists working on it have all their marbles. The ‘good news’ discovery is this: coriander and tumeric (the yellowing agent in curry) has been show to cut cow- and sheep-fart methane content by up to 40%. From coverage in
