Jimmy Fallon Not Hosting Oscars: ‘It’s An Honor To Be Asked’

Rumors had swirled that late night host Jimmy Fallon could host the 2012 Oscars telecast, with none other than SNL / Late Night producer Lorne Michaels potentially coming aboard to produce the annual extravaganza. Speaking with Matt Lauer Wednesday on the Today show, Fallon seemed to corroborate the speculation but revealed that he will not be hosting. “No, I’m not going to do the Oscars,” Fallon said. “It’s an honor to be asked by the Academy, but it’s not my year.” So wait — Fallon was asked to host, and he turned them down? Semantics, etc. Between the departure of ex-Academy president Tom Sherak and the new tenure of his successor Hawk Koch, the reported objections ABC had to hiring NBC figure Fallon, and the fact that Fallon’s late night rival Jimmy Kimmel is already hosting the Emmys — which Fallon did in 2010 to positive reviews — who knows why the Academy and Fallon couldn’t make it happen this year. If the gig’s still open, who, if not Fallon/Michaels, could finally make the Oscars telecast great again? (Put your hand down, Ratner .) Sound off, Oscarwatchers! [ THR ]

Men in Black 3’s Chinese Villains Neuralyzed By China’s Censors

It’s no secret that Chinese censors are tough nuts to crack when it comes to Hollywood imports like Men in Black 3 . And, sure — those scenes of aliens with reptilian tongues disguised as Chinatown restaurant workers serving up contraband foodstuffs played on easy jokes, and were reportedly excised from the Chinese release. But was there something more subtle and subversive at play when Agent J “neuralized” a crowd of innocent Chinatown bystanders? Per the Telegraph, Men in Black 3 ‘s Chinatown scenes were the focus of China’s censors, who took pains to cut out moments from the film that painted people of Chinese ancestry — well, aliens posing as Asians working in a Chinese restaurant, at least — in a negative light. Reports vary on just how much was cut out, with The Telegraph citing 13 minutes of edited footage. Sure, whatever. Take out the seemingly villainous Chinese folks. More interesting is the speculation surrounding why a scene depicting Smith mind-wiping a group of civilians right after his Chinatown brawl might have been removed. “This could have been a hint on the use of internet censorship to maintain social stability,” commented China’s Southern Daily newspaper (via The Telegraph ). Censoring the MIB neuralizer from audiences because it’s a form of insidious government mind control? Hilariously ironic. I’d like to think Barry Sonnenfeld and Smith and Co. had this kind of subversive agenda in mind, but YEAH RIGHT. All I want to know is, how can I neuralyze that hideous Pitbull song from my brain? Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis: Is It Over?

Are Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, his partner of 14 years now, a thing of the past or headed in that direction fast? Such rumors have been swirling this week. The pair has not made a public appearance together for more than a year, and the Dark Shadows star’s solo trip to the Golden Globes fueled the split rumors. People reports that America’s favorite actor and the French singer-actress have called it quits, having led “separate lives” for some time now. The couple has long maintained separate homes , in West Hollywood and France. A source allegedly close to Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis said the following: “They bet that they could move to California for long stays for his career. They bet that things could continue there as they had in the south of France.” “They lost that bet. Vanessa has gone seven years between albums and several years between film projects while he became Jack Sparrow,” the source said. On January 6, a tired-looking Paradis was spotted shopping with daughter Lily-Rose, 12, at Los Angeles The Grove, adding to the speculation of trouble. The couple also has a nine-year-old son, John Christopher Depp III. For what it’s worth, in December 2010, Depp gave an interview to Extra about why he and Paradis had no plans for marriage – now or down the line. “I never found myself needing that piece of paper. Marriage is really from soul to soul, heart to heart. You don’t need somebody to say you’re married.” “If Vanessa wanted to get hitched, why not… But the thing is, I’d be so scared of ruining her last name. She’s got such a good last name,” he said. Neither party has commented on the rumored breakup. [Photo: WENN.com]
