The Mid-Atlantic was rocked with storms yesterday. Rain, hail, 60 mph winds, and Tornadoes touched down in New York! As a swirling mass of black cloud swept over the Rockaways on Saturday morning…not one but two tornadoes ripped through parts of Brooklyn and Queens, causing as much bemusement as terror among New Yorkers unaccustomed to such aggressive weather. One tornado ripped through a beach club in Queens, one of several outbursts of severe weather across the New York region that flooded roads, felled power lines, and forced the delay of the United States Open. A second tornado touched down in Canarsie, Brooklyn, the National Weather Service said. The swirling columns of wind and water in Queens, captured by dozens of people on cellphones and almost instantly posted on the Internet, lasted only minutes, according to witnesses. But in that short time the tornado tore down walls, lifted roofs off homes and tangled power lines as it cut a path through the Rockaways, near Breezy Point. Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, who arrived in Breezy Point on Saturday afternoon to assess the damage, said there had been no reports of injuries. The second tornado struck Brooklyn about 11:30 a.m. with a speed of 110 miles an hour and traveled about half a mile, the Weather Service said. The severe weather was expected to continue into the night as a cold front moving in from the west made its way into the area, meeting up with the warm, moist air ahead of it and causing instability in the atmosphere. The death toll from the tornadoes that ripped through five Midwestern states stands at 39, as workers continue to comb through the wreckage for more possible victims. A band of fast-moving storms brought reports of more than one hundred possible tornadoes across the South on Saturday, toppling trees, snapping power lines and bringing the two-day death toll to 17. Emergency crews in Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama worked to assess the damage as the storm system moved north into the Carolinas and southern Virginia, according to the National Weather Service. Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley declared a state of emergency Friday after reports of tornado touchdowns in at least six counties. Three people were also killed in Autauga County after fallen trees crashed into mobile homes in the area, police said. Some of the death toll reads as follows: Three deaths in Washington County were reported, said Yasamie August, spokeswoman for the Alabama Emergency Management Agency. Two other deaths were previously reported in Oklahoma and seven in Arkansas. In Greene County, Mississippi, one death and six injuries were reported, officials said. And if that wasn’t bad enough… Rescue crews found a 34-year-old woman in bed with her 7-year-old, whom she had apparently come to comfort during the overnight storm, said Little Rock Fire Department Capt. The Clarion Ledger : Tornadoes and high winds whipped through the Jackson metro area today, causing multiple injuries, shutting down I-20, ravaging homes and businesses and knocking out power to thousands. There have been no deaths, but eight people were hospitalized, one from East Lake in Clinton in critical condition.
