Katy Perry Teases Teenage Dream Special Edition With Song Previews

Snippets of ‘Dressin’ Up’ and ‘Wide Awake’ give fans taste of the March 27 release. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection Photo: Jive is set to release Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection later this month, and in two new teases , the singer is displaying her signature sense of sass. Mid-tempo track “Wide Awake” is big and full of emotion. The song seems to pick up where her single “Part of Me” left off. While “Part” is a kiss-off, “Wide Awake” is all about the empowerment one feels after letting go of someone. “I’m wide awake, not losing any sleep/ I picked up every piece, and landed on my feet/ I’m wide awake, need nothing to complete myself,” she sings. “I’m wide awake, I am born again/ Out of the lion’s den, I don’t have to pretend/ And it’s too late, the story’s over now/ The end.” The other teased track, “Dressin’ Up,” is on the other end of the spectrum. All Katy feels on the song is sexy and sexed up. Produced by Tricky Stewart, it’s a synthy, crunchy, grinding dance song, on which she sings, “Oh boy tell me your fantasy/ Tonight’s the night/ Tonight I’m gonna come alive/ Make you forget about your nine to five/ Are you ready for your blood to rise/ Tonight’s the night I’m dressin’ up for you.” “This song is really special,” Stewart told MTV News about the track. “It definitely fits. It’s right there in what her sensibilities are as a musician and a songwriter. She doesn’t change much. She has a very keen musical taste. It’ll be really good.” The songs on the album, which drops on March 27, are an extension of 2010’s Teenage Dream, but feel fresh enough to stand on their own as well. “With Teenage Dream, the reasons why I wanted to put out this special edition, Complete Confection, is two major reasons for me: One, I’m doing it mostly for the hard-core fans because they always love all the extras,” Perry told MTV News earlier this month. “The second reason I wanted to do it is because it’s my one last push, to push that person that is on the precipice of becoming a fan,” she continued. “They’re thinking to themselves, ‘I bought four or five singles, maybe I should actually complete my album and now I should really complete my album because I’m gonna get 19 songs for a really great price.’ I think it’s like a bargain and I’m doing it for my fans.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Katy Perry Related Artists Katy Perry

Nicole Scherzinger Says New Album Will Be ‘Empowering’

Pussycat Doll dishes to MTV News about recording ‘dance anthems’ with producer RedOne. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Nicole Scherzinger and 50 Cent Photo: MTV News Nicole Scherzinger is currently in the process of wrapping up work on her solo album, Killer Love, set to drop later this year. For it, she’s already hooked up with 50 Cent for the track “Right There,” and she’s working with some choice A-list producers for the long-simmering record. “Well, I did a lot of the album with my producer RedOne and then I did sprinkles, other colors of the album with producers like Jim Jonsin and The-Dream and Tricky Stewart and Ne-Yo and I’m fortunate enough to have my boy 50 and Snoop on the album,” Scherzinger told MTV News when we visited the “Right There” set in L.A. “So it’s definitely got empowering, strong dance anthems and then I got an urban twist in there and some really good uplifting songs as well.” RedOne is certainly the man of the moment, helming hit tunes for Lady Gaga and J.Lo. Scherzinger said that working with the producer was amazing for many reasons, including their choice of locale while recording. “It was amazing. We actually did most of the album when we worked together. We recorded in the South of France and in Spain and it wasn’t just a really beautiful environment but it was a beautiful vibe,” she recalled. “I just had a really big sound, a really strong sound in my head … this loud dangerous image that I wanted to hear and put live onstage. And RedOne is an amazing musician, so he’s able to put all these different sounds together and come up with an amazing hybrid. It’s really fun.” Are you looking forward to new music from the Pussycat Doll? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Nicole Scherzinger

Katy Perry Producer Likes Teenage Dream’s Grammy Chances

‘Being nominated is great, but winning is even better,’ Tricky Stewart tells MTV News of Album of the Year nod. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Tricky Stewart Photo: MTV News Despite debuting at #1 on the Billboard albums chart and spawning three massive hit singles, some in the industry were surprised earlier this month when Katy Perry ‘s Teenage Dream grabbed a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year . Tricky Stewart was not one of them. “You know, I did four songs on that record, so I’m really proud of it,” he told MTV News. “And not just because it’s [nominated in] the Album of the Year category, but because Dr. Luke did an amazing job on the singles and Stargate did an amazing job on the singles … but all of us together, we put that album together, and I think it’s pretty flawless.” And while, at this point, Grammy noms are nothing new to the super-producer — this marks the second-consecutive year he’s in the running for Album of the Year (Beyonc

‘American Idol’ Competitor ‘The Voice Of America’ Coming Next Spring

Mark Burnett-produced show will pair singers with celebrity mentors. By Gil Kaufman Mark Burnett Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images “American Idol” has ruled the TV landscape for almost a decade, drawing the biggest small-screen ratings of any show and quickly dispatching a series of wannabe competitors. But for next season, NBC has teamed up with “Survivor” heavyweight producer Mark Burnett to launch what could be the most serious challenge to the “Idol” throne yet. According to The Hollywood Reporter , NBC is aiming to steal the thunder of both “Idol” and Fox’s other upcoming reality singing show, Simon Cowell’s “The X Factor,” with a singing competition tentatively called “The Voice of America.” The show is based on the #1 program in the Netherlands, “The Voice of Holland,” which has reportedly put up some of the biggest ratings in Dutch TV history, steamrolling that country’s versions of “Idol” and “X Factor.” The new singing program is slated to premiere next spring, potentially going up against “Idol” and getting a jump on the fall launch of the first season of the American version of “The X Factor.” “Voice” will feature a panel of four celebrity coaches, who will sit with their backs to the contestants during the audition rounds in order to focus on their voices, not their looks. If they approve of the performance, they will push a button that will send the singer to the next round, claiming them as one of their students. If more than one judge likes a singer, that singer gets to choose which celebrity will be his or her coach. “Somebody will show up with all the right moves and look like a star, but their voice is only good, not great, and they don’t get chosen,” Burnett explained. “You’re dealing only with your sense of hearing — do you believe this voice is worthy of your commitment? The coaches have skin in the game and will be a part of the careers of these young performers after the show.” After the four teams are set, the coaches will mentor the contestants and pit the teams against one another, with viewers picking the winner. At times, the mentors will also place two team members against each other, giving them the same song to sing in front of the studio audience in order to decide which one they would like to keep developing. The final performance rounds, featuring the top vote getters from each team, will air live. The winner will receive a recording contract. The heat from the new kid on the block comes as “Idol” continues to tinker with its formula. In addition to the previously announced changes to its format, Entertainment Weekly reported on Monday that after the 325 Hollywood-round contenders were whittled down to 60, the whole crew moved to Las Vegas, where the remaining singers have been rehearsing to perform Beatles songs on the stage where Cirque du Soleil performs its Beatles homage, “Love.” New in-house mentor Interscope boss Jimmy Iovine has not only been providing advice on the new “American Idol,” but has brought along a group of mega-producers to guide the singers as well. Among the knob twiddlers offering advice: Alex da Kid (“Love the Way You Lie”), Tricky Stewart (“Baby”), Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins (“Telephone”), Polow da Don (“Turnin’ Me On”) and Jim Jonsin (“Whatever You Like”). Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
