Finally, Roman Polanski Gets the Cartoon Justice He Deserves

Roman Polanski may be a free man, but that doesn’t mean he’s escaped judgment altogether. The filmmaker, whom Swiss authorities released from house arrest after declining to extradite him to the U.S. , is now the subject of an interactive cartoon series that lets you sentence him from the comfort of home. And when execution by killer whale is an option, why wouldn’t you?

On DVD: When Mud Orgies and Full Monties Aren’t Enough

There are plenty of reasons to look back at the ’60s and envy its crazy natives, but Bob Levis’s notorious and rarely-seen Gold (1968) manifests a beaut: in those days, the rules that govern mass culture could be treated like toilet paper. Music and movies could not just toss out the rulebook but act as if it never existed, making up stuff as they went along with the copious assistance of very good dope, a ubiquitous and intoxicating sexual chaos, and a happy disdain for the establishment that’s never been equaled. (American youth since then has been mere sheep — sheep! )

HBO Picks Up Luck with Dustin Hoffman

File this one under no-brainer. HBO just sent out an announcement stating that the network has picked up the David Milch/Michael Mann co-production Luck , starring Dustin Hoffman, Nick Nolte and a host of other recognizable character actors. The series — which will shoot this fall — centers on the seedy world of horse racing, and with Milch’s proclivity for eccentric swearing in past efforts like Deadwood and NYPD Blue , that milieu should suit him just fine.

How Does The Price is Right’s ‘Perfect Bid’ Coup Rank Among Game Shows’ Greatest Scandals?

The Price is Right is more than a game show. It’s one of our richest traditions, an Easter-colored riot of sound effects, Plinko chips, Jenny-O products, Barker’s Beauties, and importance. We need its aggressively nostalgic appeal for sustenance, and our kids need its Jiffy Pop-sponsored comfort for sick days. But a new Esquire article sheds light on recent contestant Terry Kniess’s perfect showcase bid and casts some doubt (and a little applause) on the staggering perfection with which he bid $23,743 on a karaoke machine, pool table, and camper. Impressive, yes, but did jilted ex-producer Roger Dobkowitz clue in Kniess on the price? Instead of figuring out this mess, we’re ranking Kniess’s perfect bid as one of the five biggest game show scandals in history. Is it the biggest one ever? Join us for a historical rundown of the greatest game show scandals, hoaxes, and mysteries.

Jon Hamm’s ‘Beautiful’ Sex Tape

How gallant is Jon Hamm? During a joint W interview with his The Town costar Rebecca Hall where the reporter dared to ask Hall about rumors that she’d wrecked the marriage of Sam Mendes and Kate Winslet, Hamm swooped in, stating, “The reality is that I broke them up.” Hall gamely agreed, adding, “Jon Hamm was sleeping with Sam Mendes.” When the reporter then asked if a sex tape existed, Hamm said, “Does it? He directed it. It’s beautiful.” [ W ]

George Steinbrenner Dead at 80; Remember His Best Seinfeld Rant

George Steinbrenner, whose 37-year run as the principal owner of the New York Yankees transformed professional sports for better or worse, died this morning after suffering a massive heart attack. He was 80. More than just a shipbuilding magnate turned Major League oligarch, Steinbrenner also became a pop-culture monolith in fairly short order; his penchant for hiring and firing more managers in the ’70s and ’80s than most teams see in a half-century (including Billy Martin five times ) made him a polarizing figure in New York and beyond. And he could thank Seinfeld for at least some of that notoriety.
