It had its big debut in Cannes in May and its U.S. release at the end of August. Now John Hillcoat ‘s Lawless is headed to Blu-ray and DVD. Based on Matt Bondurant’s novel The Wettest County in the World , the film stars Shia LaBeouf ( Disturbia ), Tom Hardy ( The Dark Knight Rises ), Academy Award-nominee Gary Oldman ( Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy ), Mia Wasikowska ( Alice in Wonderland ), Academy Award-nominee Jessica Chastain ( The Help ) and Emmy winner Guy Pearce ( The King’s Speech ). The Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD will include special features. Hitting retail on November 27th, special features include an audio commentary from director John Hillcoat and author Matt Dondurant. It will also have two featurettes: The True Story of the Wettest County in the World and Franklin County, VA: Then and Now . Willie Nelson’s Midnight Run music video is also a part of the nifty additions. Commenting on the film in Cannes last May, John Hillcoat noted : “There are a lot of parallels to today with the economic crisis, today’s Mexican cartels, heroin in New York, crack and cocaine in the ’80s and the war on drugs. All this feeds back to Prohibition in the ’30s.” Lawless opened with just over $10 million in its opening weekend theatrical release in late August, and has taken in over $36.27 million through last weekend. Official logline : They were brothers who became outlaws, and outlaws who became heroes…The three Bondurant boys (Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Jason Clarke), along with their sultry new hire (Jessica Chastain), command the most lucrative bootlegging operation in Franklin County, Virginia.  The locals consider them “indestructible.”  But the law – in the form of a corrupt special deputy (Guy Pearce) – wants a cut of their action, at any cost.  When youngest brother Jack (LaBeouf) gets a taste of power with a deadly gangster (Gary Oldman), the whole business blows sky high.  Based on the astonishing true story, the Bondurant brotherhood is the stuff of legend.

About That Time Shia LaBeouf And Tom Hardy Got Into A ‘Tussle’ On The Set Of Lawless

Now that John Hillcoat ‘s brutal Prohibition tale Lawless has hit screens ( read Movieline’s review here ) you can more vividly imagine the testosterone-and-moonshine fueled atmosphere that might have permeated the set, where, as Lawless legend has it, co-stars Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy had an unscripted scuffle. Nevertheless, while making the press rounds Hillcoat and LaBeouf both tried to squash rumors of the brotherly beef. Just a little innocent horseplay gone wrong? LaBeouf and Hardy play Jack and Forrest Bondurant, two of a trio of bootlegging brothers who come to blows with the law (and, sometimes, each other) as they run a moonshine empire out of their hill country home base. A third brother, Howard (played by Jason Clarke) rounds out the sibling dynamic, but it’s the strained relationship between the cardigan-clad family head Forrest and young, headstrong Jack that provides the bulk of the dramatic push and pull. As the story goes, one day on set LaBeouf knocked out Hardy and Hardy “never did that roughhouse stuff with me again.” The tangle first came to light in LaBeouf’s fantastically unfiltered Details interview , though that was, understandably, overshadowed by his revelation about hooking up with Transformers co-star Megan Fox and other assorted truth bombs. Then, while promoting his MMA pic Warrior , Hardy dropped a few cheeky quotes about the incident. “I got knocked out by Shia LaBeouf, actually,” Hardy said to journalists, as recounted by Den of Geek . “In Wettest County , apparently .” Apparently! So now comes Hillcoat to set the record straight. “There was this kind of, like, this challenging brotherly thing that starts going on with him,” Hillcoat admitted in an interview with Yahoo . “But yeah, there was a tussle, but it wasn’t quite the thing that was described.” LaBeouf, who’s yet again spilled so many juicier, more distracting quotes of late — from his acid-dropping Method acting to his embracing of real sex in Lars Von Trier’s Nymphomaniac to his maybe-joke that he got the job by sending in a sex tape — tells MTV that the fistfight was borne out of love. “That was straight love,” he said. “There was a lot of love on that set in general. There was a lot of aggression in me and a lot of aggression on [Hardy’s] side. We were playing brothers. There was a constant finger-in-the-ear [teasing] thing going on for a while.” [ Yahoo , MTV ]

Watch the 2012 Oscars Trailer, Starring Billy Crystal and the Stars of… Transformers

ABC released a cutesy trailer for the 2012 Academy Awards telecast that speaks loads to the youthful new direction the show’s makers were going in when they brought Brett Ratner aboard, before his untimely exit ; in a slick parody of globe-trotting Hollywood fare, two heroes are tasked with tracking down wizened Billy Crystal for hosting duties on the Big Night. Those heroes? None other than Transformers castmates Josh Duhamel and Megan Fox, because of course. Nothing says current like the girl who was the hottest thing on earth three years ago! Watch the trailer and see if it entices you with its “Hey kids, check us out!” hip comedy stylings. The trailer even comes courtesy of Funny Or Die, it’s so plugged in! And hey, isn’t that Vinnie Jones as a mysterious bartender with inside intel? And Bill Fichtner as Oscarcast producer Brian Grazer? (At least that much makes sense.) And, well, Robin Williams as a Himalayan ferryman? (That cameo actually just makes me sad that he’s not hosting or co-hosting with Crystal.) See, the Oscars are for everybody! This milquetoast-but-four-quadrant trailer proves it! Verdict: The 84th Academy Awards will be televised live on Feb. 26 at 4p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET, and from the looks of it we’ll be in for a loooong night.

Shia LaBeoummer: Wettest County Dumped to August

After their not-so-dextrous handling of The Road throttled director John Hillcoat’s film into cultural oblivion, let’s be honest: There’s something bittersweet about watching the Weinsteins suffocate Hillcoat’s anticipated follow-up Wettest County for old times’ sake. Starring Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy and Jessica Chastain in an adaptation of Matt Bondurant’s acclaimed Depression-era novel The Wettest County in the World , the movie has been shifted from its relatively favorable April 20 release date to the death row of Labor Day weekend — Aug. 31, where, to be fair, where Focus Features has dined out the last two years with similarly adult-targeted fare like The American and The Debt . Of course, those movies had proven stars in George Clooney and Helen Mirren, respectively; practically since its inception, Wettest County has been viewed as a dramatic mainstream proving ground for leading men LaBeouf and Hardy. Now it’s more like some kind of three-legged race to the holiday box-office finish line, with the duo facing off against the supernatural thriller 7500 . Good luck, fellas! Anyway! All the more resources for the surging #ConsiderUggie campaign . [ LAT ]

First Look: Shia LaBeouf Gets His Prohibition On in The Wettest County in the World

For a lot of film aficionados, The Wettest County in the World is one of the most highly anticipated projects currently in production. The adaptation of Matt Bondurant’s Prohibition-set novel has attracted a host top-line talent — including Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Guy Pearce, Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain and Gary Oldman — and director John Hillcoat, meaning it should be equal parts gritty and violent. Not this first image from the set though, which features LaBeouf grinning alongside some youngsters in their best period-appropriate wardrobe.
