In the children’s section though? Woman Fired For Reporting Sex In Library It’s sad to see folks fired for doing their job. Hope the poor thing had a savings plan. According to KOB 4: A now-former assistant librarian claims the mayor fired her after she witnessed two town employees having sex in the children’s section of the Estancia Public Library. “Right in the middle of the library, in front of God and everybody,” attorney Joseph CampBell said. He’s representing Jaime Kurz who was terminated last week. CampBell said Kurz arrived at the library just before it opened on August 20th. He said she heard noises, set down her bags, and quickly discovered the employees having sexual intercourse. Later that day, he said Kurz contacted Julie Carter, who was the town clerk at the time, to report what she witnessed. CampBell said Carter then contacted Mayor Sylvia Chavez. In early October, CampBell said Kurz wrote a letter to the mayor requesting time off to avoid a “hostile work situation.” The mayor signed the letter, he said. A few days later, CampBell said Kurz and Carter both learned that they would lose their jobs. The town terminated Carter’s employment two weeks ago. “They’re two outsiders, non-locals,” he said. “You know, they stumbled upon and kicked up a hornets nest.” This is what she gets for her hard work. KOB Eyewitness News 4 attempted to contact Mayor Chavez in-person on Friday, but learned that she was out of town. In a phone conversation with Catherine Robinson, the city’s attorney, Robinson said Kurz and Carter were not terminated for reporting the alleged sex act, but said she could not elaborate since it was a personnel matter. Robinson confirmed that the sex allegations were addressed and dealt with after they were reported. A KOB Eyewitness News 4 crew found one of the accused employees at work on Friday. In a letter from Mayor Chavez to Kurz dated October 10th, Mayor Chavez told Kurz that she was being terminated for failing to turn over keys to the library when asked and for failing to meet with the mayor to discuss the hostile work claims. CampBell said the city’s arguments don’t hold water. “Yeah, it’s like a sieve,” he said. Although Kurz and Carter were at-will employees, meaning they could be terminated for no reason at any time, CampBell said they fall in a protected class under the Whistleblower Protection Act since they reported misconduct or inappropriate behavior. CampBell said he plans to file a lawsuit against the city in the next several months on Kurz’s behalf. Gary Mitchell, the attorney for Julie Carter, also said he’d do the same. The kids will be back in the children’s section touching those books. Eww. Shutterstock

Edward Snowden has been revealed as the whistleblower who provided The Guardian (UK) with information for its groundbreaking new report on the NSA. The man who controversially outed the National Security Agency’s surveillance practices to the newspaper unexpectedly outed himself on Sunday. He’s been working with the NSA for four years and copied the last set of documents he intended to leak three weeks ago at his Hawaii office. Snowden, 29, is a Booz Allen Hamilton employee who requested a two-week leave of absence, told his girlfriend he had to leave and flew to Hong Kong. Why there? “Because he believed that it was one of the few places in the world that both could and would resist the dictates of the US government.” Snowden, who previously worked at the CIA after being discharged from the U.S. Army, has now been holed up in a Hong Kong hotel for three weeks. He’s seemingly at peace with the consequences his actions could bring, although he is “intensely nervous” about being spied on, according to reports. “I understand that I will be made to suffer for my actions,” he tells the Guardian . “I will be satisfied if the federation of secret law, unequal pardon and irresistible executive powers that rule the world that I love are revealed even for an instant.” “The only thing I fear is the harmful effects on my family, who I won’t be able to help any more. That’s what keeps me up at night,” he added. Snowden’s motivation for leaking NSA documents and information are rooted in a desire to check what he considers government’s abuses of power: “The government has granted itself power it is not entitled to. There is no public oversight. The result is people like myself have the latitude to go further than they are allowed to.” Snowden will likely draw comparisons with that against Wikileaks source Bradley Manning , though Snowden, as a civilian, will not face a military tribunal. Just the same, several lawmakers have already called for him to be prosecuted. The Guardian also published a video interview with Snowden came as the paper was under increasing pressure this weekend to be more transparent. After doubts were cast on its original reporting about the NSA’s surveillance programs, Snowden’s choice to reveal himself immediately turned heads.

By Stephen C. Webster Friday, November 19th, 2010 — 4:27 pm It's too early to say for sure, but Oregon Senator Ron Wyden could very well go down in the history books as the man who saved the Internet. A bill that critics say would have given the government power to censor the Internet will not pass this year thanks to the Oregon Democrat, who announced his opposition during a recent committee hearing. Individual Senators can place holds on pending legislation, in this case meaning proponents of the bill will be forced to reintroduce the measure and will not be able to proceed until the next Congress convenes. Even then, its passage is not certain. The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) would have permitted a blanket takedown of any domain alleged to be assisting activities that violate copyright law, based upon the judgment of state attorneys general. “Deploying this statute to combat online copyright infringement seems almost like using a bunker-busting cluster bomb, when what you need is a precision-guided missile,” Wyden said. The act was unanimously approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday. “Few things are more important to the future of the American economy and job creation than protecting our intellectual property,” said Senator Patrick Leahy, a Democrat from Vermont who co-sponsored the bill. “That is why the legislation is supported by both labor and industry, and Democrats and Republicans are standing together.” Opponents of the bill insist that many sites which contain allegedly infringing materials also traffic in legitimate data that's constitutionally protected. There's also a fear that whatever action the US takes, other countries will seek to emulate, and some to a much more zealous degree. Activist group DemandProgress, which is running a petition against the bill, argued the powers in the bill could be used for political purposes. If the whistleblower Web site WikiLeaks is found to be hosting copyrighted material, for instance, access to WikiLeaks could be blocked for all US Internet users, they suggested. A group of academics, led by Temple University law professor David Post, have signed a petition opposing COICA. “The Act, if enacted into law, would fundamentally alter U.S. policy towards Internet speech, and would set a dangerous precedent with potentially serious consequences for free expression and global Internet freedom,” Post wrote in the petition letter (PDF). “Blacklisting entire sites out of the domain name system,” explained the Electronic Frontiers Foundation (EFF), a privacy and digital rights advocate group, is a “reckless scheme that will undermine global Internet infrastructure and censor legitimate online speech.” The EFF has published a list of Web sites it believes are at highest risk of being shut down under the proposed law. Included in the list are file-hosting services such as Rapidshare and Mediafire, music mash-up sites like SoundCloud and MashupTown, as well as “sites that discuss and advocate for P2P technology or for piracy,” such as pirate-party.us and P2PNet. The Internet's creator, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, has called such Internet disconnection laws a “blight” on the net, citing French policies to deal with online copyright infringement. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2010/11/oregon-senator-vows-block-internet-censorship… added by: treewolf39

A former contractor who worked for BP claims the oil conglomerate broke federal laws and violated its own internal procedures by failing to maintain crucial safety and engineering documents related to one of the firms other deepwater production projects in the Gulf of Mexico, according to internal emails and other documents obtained by Truthout. The whistleblower, whose name has been withheld at the person's request because the whistleblower still works in the oil industry and fears retaliation, first raised concerns about safety issues related to BP Atlantis, the world's largest and deepest semi-submersible oil and natural gas platform, located about 200 miles south of New Orleans, in November 2008. Atlantis, which began production in October 2007, has the capacity to produce about 8.4 million gallons of oil and 180 million cubic feet of natural gas per day. (more at link) added by: Vierotchka
