And Now a Final Word About Jack and Jill

Glenn Kenny didn’t quite make the cut in last week’s scathing critical responses to Jack and Jill , but his withering postscript deserves a look: “One thing I did not get into in my review of Jack and Jill for MSN Movies was just how (ostensibly) insultingly sub-pro forma is its actual filmmaking. It isn’t even just a matter of how obviously its indifferent redemption-narrative structure is the Avid-enabled equivalent of a very sloppy butter sculpture. The indifference is felt in almost every aspect [… T]his is the first time it really hit home for me just how mindful Sandler, director Dennis Dugan, and the rest of the perpetrators are with respect to keeping overhead down. Good lord.” [ Some Came Running ]

Why The Dark Knight Rises Didn’t Film at Occupy Wall Street

Co-star Matthew Modine, promoting his short Jesus Was A Commie , explained why the notion to film the megabudget blockbuster at Occupy Wall Street was scrapped. “The wisdom of Christopher Nolan and his incredible team was that, while it seemed like a good idea to give [the protestors] an opportunity for work, to give them money, it would send a terrible message . At the end of the day, we’re making a movie. What’s happening down there is more important than that. To co-opt what’s happening there and around the country… we didn’t want to trivialize it. It was more important to respect what they’re doing than to do anything that could potentially trivialize the political situation downtown.” [ indieWIRE ]

Harry Potter’s Warwick Davis on Wand Choreography, George Lucas and What He Won’t Miss About Potter

Even though you may not immediately recognize the name Warwick Davis, you are familiar with his work. That’s because the English actor has been involved with two of the most storied franchises in all of film history — the first being Star Wars , where Davis made his onscreen debut as Wicket in Return of the Jedi at the tender age of 13. Nearly three decades (and title roles in Willow and the six-part Leprechaun series) later, Davis helps close the door on the Harry Potter franchise, where he has played Hogwarts charms master Professor Flitwick and Gringotts goblin Griphook for 10 years.

Is Fincher’s Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Too Extreme for Oscars?

Over at Entertainment Weekly, David Fincher plays coy joking about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ‘s Oscar chances. [Some spoilers follow, though they’ll come as no surprise to those familiar with Stieg Larsson’s book or Niels Arden Oplev’s 2009 film adaptation.] How likely is is that the Academy will be so turned off by the extremes seen in Fincher’s film that they’d pass it over come nomination day?

Kevin Clash, the Man Behind Elmo, on Jim Henson, Puppetry, and Jason Segel’s The Muppets

The Muppets are legendary TV and film characters, but there’s something about Sesame Street ‘s giggliest resident, Elmo, that makes small children perk up. Constance Marks, the director of the new documentary Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey , put Elmo’s appeal this way: “Kids sit up, pay attention, and turn on. There’s that bright red fur and adorable bulgy eyes, but it’s the soul of the puppeteer that people are responding to. It’s an amazing gift.”
