Steven Tyler To Release Tell-All Autobiography In May

‘Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?’ is Aerosmith frontman/’Idol’ judge’s second memoir. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler Photo: Tony Duran / FOX Some rock-and-roll lives are so epic that they require more than one official telling. That’s clearly the case with colorful Aerosmith frontman and “American Idol” judge Steven Tyler , who is preparing to release his second memoir, “Does the Noise in My Head Bother You,” on May 3. According to the book’s publisher, HarperCollins, the long-in-the-works book promises to share “the unbridled truth, the in-your-face, up-close and prodigious tale of Steven Tyler straight from the horse’s lips … All the unexpurgated, brain-jangling tales of debauchery, sex & drugs, transcendence & chemical dependence you will ever want to hear.” Tyler (born Steven Victor Tallarico), 63, wrote about his wild life in 1997’s Aerosmith autobiography “Walk This Way,” but with his higher profile on “Idol,” now seems like the time to let his younger fans get a window into his 40-plus years of rock-and-roll high life. “I’ve been mythicized, Mick-icized, eulogized and fooligized, I’ve been Cole-Portered and farmer’s-daughtered, I’ve been Led Zepped and 12-stepped,” Tyler explains in promotional materials in his classic hoodoo jive talk about his colorful past. “I’m a rhyming fool and so cool that me, Fritz the Cat, and Mohair Sam are the baddest cats that am. I have so many outrageous stories, too many, and I’m gonna tell ’em all.” He’s added plenty of new drama since the last book, including a very public feud with his longtime bandmates , an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a few stage falls, a relapse, a split with his second wife and the death of his first wife, a battle with hepatitis C and throat surgery, and a triumphant return to the spotlight on “Idol.” It was unknown at press time, though, if the book will contain much material on his “Idol” gig. “Tyler tells what it’s like to be a living legend and the frontman of one of the world’s most revered and infamous bands — the debauchery, the money, the notoriety, the fights, the motels and hotels, the elevators, limos, buses and jets, the rehab,” reads the book description. “He reveals the spiritual side that ‘gets lost behind the stereotype of the Sex Guy, the Drug Guy, the Demon of Screamin’, the Terror of the Tropicana.’ And he talks about his epic romantic life and his relationship with his four children.” Are you excited for Steven Tyler’s book? Steven Tyler Talks ‘Long Road’ To ‘American Idol’ Top 24

‘Idol’ judge tells MTV News ‘it’s heartbreaking’ to let go of hopefuls with loads of ‘character’ but OK voices. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Steven Tyler Photo: MTV News Those who’ve been following the revamped 10th season of ratings juggernaut “American Idol” know that the addition of new judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler have spiced things up a bit. Particularly in the case of Tyler, who has peppered each episode with his colorful musings, mugging for the cameras, and interactions with contestants and fellow judges. When MTV News spoke to the Aerosmith frontman during NBA All-Star weekend, we asked how he’s doing, now that they’ve narrowed the thousands of “Idol” hopefuls down to a competitive 50. “It was a long road whittling it down from 700 [contestants] to 400, then Hollywood Week and then, aw man … letting them go,” Tyler said, adding that it’s particularly difficult to let go of the ones who are OK singers, but potentially great performers. “You know what? Not everybody that’s great sings good. They’ve got character, that certain something you can’t put your finger on,” he explained. “And man, when they sing, look out. A lot of these kids have got it, but we have to let them go and it’s heartbreaking.” Tyler went on to say that his road to success in the music industry was paved with a few more hard knocks than the “Idol” contestants have to endure. “I didn’t watch ‘Idol’ because I grew up from, you had to play clubs. If you don’t play in front of the people and get your hard knocks from that and get booed, [you don’t learn] how to stand up when you fall back down,” he said before likening himself and judges Lopez and Randy Jackson as the “American Idol” school of hard knocks. “[When] they’re in front of us,” he said of the contestants. “We’re the club.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Ashlee Simpson And Pete Wentz: Details Behind The Divorce

Insiders say the couple have ‘just grown apart.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz in 2008 Photo: Gustavo Caballero/Getty Images Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz’s split may seem shocking to fans, but insiders close to the pair say there’s little drama behind the scenes. According to People, sources close to Simpson and Wentz have said the pop star and Fall Out Boy rocker aren’t mixing any emotional theatrics into their impending divorce. One person connected to the situation said the pair are riding out the breakup peacefully. Check out photos of the ex-couple throughout the years. “It’s very amicable. They’re on very friendly terms and speaking — it’s fine,” an insider said. “They’ve just grown apart. They’ve been growing apart for quite some time.” The source added that parenting their toddler remains their top priority. “It’s all about [their 2-year-old son] Bronx for them. They’re fantastic parents — Pete says she’s a great mom, and she says he’s a great father,” the insider said. “It’s about Bronx’s care and well-being and happiness for them.” Insiders have also echoed the “growing apart” reasoning to TMZ, adding that their respective careers — Simpson has largely eschewed the spotlight since 2008’s Bittersweet World, while Wentz has dabbled in fashion and piloted other musical projects — wedged them apart. “After Bronx was born, Ashlee made a conscious decision to get out of the business, but Pete’s heart was in music so he kept touring and that became a big issue in their relationship.” While insiders have maintained the split is drama-free, TMZ reports that Simpson left due to Wentz’s antics. “It’s really all about Pete’s erratic behavior,” the source said. “She really wanted out.” Publicly, the couple have been big on e-affection, gushing about each other on Twitter as recently as two days ago. “Dont forget 2 notice-when i look into the lil dudes eyes & smile, the way he loves. i realize @ashsimpsonwentz is a good moma + so much more,” Wentz tweeted Monday. Just last month Simpson doled out a sweet missive to her husband. “@petewentz I already miss your handsome face!” she wrote on January 19. James Durbin’s ‘American Idol’ Audition Recalls Adam Lambert

While both singers can wail, Durbin is more gritty than glam. By Adam Graham James Durbin auditions on “American Idol” Photo: FOX “American Idol” loves it when contestants come to them with a backstory, and they got a whopper of one on Wednesday (February 9) with James Durbin. The 21-year-old from Santa Cruz, California, explained that not only is he an unemployed father with a young child at home, but he was diagnosed with Tourette and Asperger’s syndromes after his musician father died of a drug overdose when he was 9 years old. He was bullied and made fun of at school and described himself as “lost,” until he met his wife, Heidi, whom he called an “angel” and who leaves him mini-messages of encouragement around the house (“I believe in my music,” “I believe in my gift,” etc.). Durbin has a propensity for crying — he welled up several times when telling his story — and was worried about keeping his emotions in check when going in front of the judges at the San Francisco auditions. “I’m gonna have to keep calm and keep still and keep my mind on what I’m here to do,” he said. “And what I’m here to do is to show America who James Durbin is.” He then managed to blow away the judges with a take on Muddy Waters’ early ’60s blues single “You Shook Me,” which was later made famous by Led Zeppelin. The slender-framed Durbin’s powerful, bombastic vocals and outstanding range immediately brought to mind season-eight belter Adam Lambert, though Durbin leaned toward gritty where Lambert was glam. Durbin then asked Steven Tyler’s permission to test drive “Dream On,” which he performed in front of the Aerosmith frontman while wiping away tears. Tyler closed his eyes and took it in, audibly approving of Durbin a number of times and later exclaiming his “over-the-top” vocals were “so, so good.” Randy Jackson praised Durbin’s range, describing it as “crazy” no less than three times. “And that’s full voice, that’s not falsetto or anything,” he raved. Jennifer Lopez was taken aback by the passion and raw emotion in Durbin’s voice, noting, “You sing from a very different place than a lot of the people we see. You sing from where you’re supposed to sing from: from feeling, from heart, from your soul. From the need to feel and make others feel.” “That’s what my goal is; that’s all I wanna do,” Durbin said. And with three “yes” votes and a ticket to Hollywood, he’s on his way. What did you think of Durbin’s audition? Let us know in the comments! ‘American Idol’ Champ Kris Allen Rates Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez

‘Steven Tyler was obviously the most interesting one,’ he tells MTV News ‘Idol’ expert Jim Cantiello during our post-show live stream. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Kris Allen during MTV News’ post-“American Idol ” live stream on Wednesday Photo: MTV News For our first-ever post- “American Idol ” live stream, “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon,” MTV News’ resident “Idol” expert Jim Cantiello brought in the big guns to discuss and dissect the premiere episode of the 10th season. A major highlight was the appearance, via Skype, of season-eight champ Kris Allen, who said hello with his dog Zorro and offered his thoughts on the new judges. “I thought they were good. I thought Steven Tyler was obviously the most interesting one,” Allen said. “I figured he was going to be a wacky kind of guy, and, I mean, you can’t be mad at him for singing [along] all the time — he’s freakin’ Steven Tyler! I thought it was awesome, I really did.” When asked how Tyler and Lopez might have influenced his audition, had they been the judges during Allen’s winning season, the 25-year-old said he hoped the Aerosmith frontman would have joined in on his audition like he did on Wednesday’s episode. “That would [have been] awesome,” Allen said. “It’s probably a little bit different to sing for someone like Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, because they have been in the industry for so long and you’ve been watching them do it forever, so it would probably be weird.” On the whole, Allen said the evening’s viewing experience — which he shared with his wife, Katy, and a couple of friends — was a good time. “It was fun,” he said. “It wasn’t mind-blowing or anything. I thought there were some good singers. I thought there was some funny stuff, and I thought Steven Tyler was great,” he said, adding that his dog, Zorro, definitely liked J.Lo the best. ‘American Idol’ Judge Steven Tyler Talks Sex, Drugs On ‘Howard Stern’

Aerosmith singer doesn’t hold back on the eve of his family-friendly new gig. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler Photo: Kevin Kane/ WireImage This is not going to be your grandma’s “American Idol.” When the show that’s beloved by everyone from tweens with blue hair to their indigo-coiffed nanas comes back Wednesday night with the first episode of season 10, it will have more surprises than the ones we’ve already told you about . “Idol” has always been a kind of wholesome family affair that the entire clan can sit down and watch together without worrying about foul language, nudity or any other PG-13 antics. That’s before new judge Steven Tyler came onboard, so don’t be surprised if your sixth-grader starts asking, “Mommy, what’s a Lunesta?” or “Daddy, what’s a three-way?” Tyler has done it all as the lead singer of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame act Aerosmith, and he’s not afraid to talk about it in its X-rated glory, even when promoting his new G-rated gig. Appearing as the surprise guest on Howard Stern’s Sirius satellite radio show Tuesday (January 18), the motor-mouthed rocker made a modest attempt to play down his colorful past, but still ended up discussing the kind of sex, drugs and rock-and-roll debauchery you’ve never heard about from any of the past “Idol” judges. Tyler left no stone unturned, speaking about everything from the inspiration for the song “Big 10 Inch Record” (hint: it’s not about vinyl) to masturbation, his active (and colorful) sex life with his current girlfriend, his love of guns, multiple trips to rehab for drugs and Penthouse Forum-worthy backstage activities with his sweetie and an eager groupie during a recent Aerosmith tour. “He’s angry with me for what? Because I took f—ing ‘Idol’? What a crock of sh–!” he responded vehemently when Stern asked if the TV gig was putting even more distance between Tyler and Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry. “Wait till Wednesday,” he teased. “I saw the debut … I’m not a TV guy, I’m a rock-and-roll junkie whore. I’m not used to your stuff, [but] it blew me away,” he added about the emotions he felt watching the first 10 minutes of the debut episode. Though he complained about his bandmates sometimes kicking him when he’s down (or in rehab), Tyler said he loves his Aerosmith pals dearly and said he explained to them that “Idol” was a good chance for him to slow down and get off the road for a while to rest his chronic and painful foot condition. “This is something else I could get into and see if it was a good fit,” he said. Putting aside his belief that no one can really be a star without paying their dues in a million dingy clubs (though his wording was much more colorful on Stern’s show), Tyler, 62, said he realized it’s a new day in the music biz, and after boiling 700 contestants down to 20, he finally gets the show. “It’s something that I’ve never got into because I never caught the rhythm of the show,” he said. “When you watch it, you kind of fall in love with this guy … there’s some people who sing their ass off.” He also explained for the first time how he got the gig, saying he was writing a song with former judge Kara DioGuardi last year for a Japanese movie, and she got him thinking about the show. Tyler said producers came to him after Aerosmith’s 2010 summer tour ended and made an offer. “She [DioGuardi] was talking to [executive producer] Nigel [Lythgoe] … and so Nigel got to management,” and that got the ball rolling, though Tyler said he swiftly rejected the show’s first offer with a brusque “f— that!” And, in another breach of past “Idol” etiquette, Tyler alluded to his payday for the gig. When Stern suggested that fellow newbie judge Jennifer Lopez was earning $12 million a year on the show, Tyler sniggered and said, “More!,” then instantly realized he may have crossed a line in discussing his paycheck. When Stern countered that perhaps it was more like $18 million, Tyler declined to answer, but did admit that he’s free to bail after one season if things don’t work out. But when it came to discussing their sex life, Tyler wasn’t so shy, with his girlfriend admitting that he’s still got plenty of stamina and never needs Viagra to get his motor running. “It gives me a headache!” he demurred of the male impotence drug, before describing his first experience on the pill a few years ago, as well as the laundry list of exotic drugs he did back in the bad old days of his addiction. In fact, it was Tyler who asked Stern if he’d ever been with two women at the same time, telling the radio host that it was “the secret to life.” But when the singer’s girlfriend suggested that she and Tyler had already invited another woman into their circle of trust, the Aerosmith frontman suddenly got a bit more squeamish and tried to change the subject. “Ah, Jesus, we’re on television!” he moaned about the Stern TV cameras focused on him, before again insisting that it hadn’t (yet) happened, but might in the future. But, soon enough, the story about the backstage tryst unfolded and Tyler groaned, “Wouldn’t you know, it would go to here?” Finally, after nearly an hour of the most unconventional “Idol” judge interview ever, he’d had enough when she divulged the gritty details of the encounter. “You’re going too far!” he yelled. “No more! No more Joe Perry, no more the band! No more sex. We got too close. It’s enough.” Asked if he was being shy because of ” ‘Idol’ and his new image,” Tyler snorted, “F— no!” Don’t miss our “American Idol” live stream “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon,” featuring post-show analysis from Jim Cantiello and special guests, on MTV.com this Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET. Steven Tyler Explains His ‘American Idol’ Judging Style

‘I take what I’ve grown up with, which is being a very harsh judge of myself, of my vocals, of my band,’ Aerosmith frontman says. By Kara Warner Steven Tyler Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images The “American Idol” season 10 premiere is just a day away, and to celebrate, MTV News has been rolling out our big guns, with “Idol” cheat sheets , breaking news and everything you need to know before Wednesday night’s big opener. On Tuesday (January 18), we had the opportunity to chat with new judge Steven Tyler, by way of a conference call with a handful of curious reporters. The Aerosmith frontman was just as energetic and amusing as he’s been in recent appearances, proving that his presence and commentary on the show will likely be a highlight each week. Of his experience thus far, Tyler said it has been good, adding that his judging style comes from his personal experience in the business. “I don’t take what happened to me this morning or last night or with the band … I don’t take that into judging kids [like] other people might have,” Tyler explained. “I kind of take what I’ve grown up with, which is being a very harsh judge of myself, of my vocals, of my band, and lay that across the talent that comes across my view.” Given that Tyler seems to be enjoying his new position — particularly that he gets to sit next to fellow newbie Jennifer Lopez, who he called “a fox,” — everyone wants to know how long he plans to be on the show. “I have more than a one-year contract,” Tyler revealed. “But as you know, things are what they are. But I have more than a one-year contract. I’ll give you that one.” Although we’re still far from season 11, we also got an early tip for next season’s contestants. Tyler cautioned against auditioning with Aerosmith tunes, specifically “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” — unless you can knock it out of the park. “They have to sing it good, you know. They must have sung in the seven weeks [of auditions], they probably got, you know, 15, 16 [performances of] ‘I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,’ ” Tyler said. “It was hard for me because it always seemed to me when they said they were going to sing it, I knew someone at home was … like, ‘If you sing that song, Tyler will be enamored.’ And when I didn’t like it, I felt a little ill at ease to tell them, ‘You know what? You really didn’t sing it good.’ ” But Tyler said that if we should hear any Aerosmith on the show beyond the tryout rounds, those performances will likely be solid. “If any of them sing it now, remember we are down to 20 great people. So if they did, it would be nothing but good.” Don’t miss our “American Idol” live stream “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon,” featuring post-show analysis from Jim Cantiello and special guests, on MTV.com this Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET. New Green Lantern Still Showcases Yet Another Hideous Face

You may recall that the main reaction to the last Green Lantern trailer here at Movieline was along the lines of, “Peter Saarsgard’s Dr. Hector Hammond is the grossest super villain in history!” Well, no one saw it coming, but this new still of the Lantern’s ally/mentor Tomar-Re actually tops Hammond’s grossness. Or maybe it just co-exists in some equally bizarre dimension where dead fish wear green tights. Have a look for yourself, I’m at a loss.
