Harvey Pekar, ‘American Splendor’ Writer, Dead At 70

Comic book cult hero was the subject of 2003 Oscar-nominated biopic. By Eric Ditzian Harvey Pekar Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Famed comic book author Harvey Pekar has died at the age of 70, The Associated Press reports. He was found dead in his Cleveland Heights, Ohio, home early Monday (July 12). Pekar had been suffering from prostate cancer, asthma, high blood pressure and depression, according to Cleveland Heights Police Capt. Michael Cannon. He had gone to bed about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday and was discovered between a bed and dresser. His wife, Joyce Brabner, called officers at around 1 a.m. The irascible comic writer, long a beloved cult figure, reached a whole new audience in 2003, when Paul Giamatti played him in the Oscar-nominated biopic, “American Splendor.” Pekar also appeared as himself in the film, which was both a postmodern exploration of Pekar’s life and a dramatization of his autobiographical comics, also called “American Splendor.” “The filmmakers took a major risk by incorporating the real Harvey and Joyce and their oddball Cleveland friends into the film, and by introducing occasional elements of cartoon illustration into the story,” Kurt Loder wrote of the film. “This could have been a mess, but it works brilliantly, poetically, unforgettably. In a summer of lumbering, soulless Hollywood blockbusters, ‘American Splendor’ shines out like a diamond on a dunghill.” Not an artist himself, Pekar recruited iconic illustrator R. Crumb in 1976 to create the art for “American Splendor,” which followed Pekar’s struggles with work, finances and general boredom. A long list of other artists would eventually illustrate the series, which Pekar continued to write until 2008. In the 1980s, Pekar became an occasional guest on “Late Night With David Letterman,” where he openly battled with the host and heavily criticized General Electric, which owns NBC. The author was eventually banned from the show, until being invited back the next decade. Mr. Pekar was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer in 1990, and he documented the experience in the graphic novel, “Our Cancer Year.” “I’m always shook up and nervous and I’ve got the hospital record to prove it,” Pekar told the Cleveland Plain Dealer in 2003. “I wake up every morning in a cold sweat, regardless of how well things went the day before. And put that I said that in a somewhat but not completely tongue-in-cheek way.” Share your memories of Harvey Pekar’s work in the comments below.

‘Avatar’ Sex Scene Might Be In Extended Film, Sam Worthington Hints

‘There’s a sex scene that everyone keeps talking about, which is going to be unique,’ Worthington says, laughing. By Todd Gilchrist Sam Worthington Photo: MTV News While it’s not entirely clear what will be included in the extended version of “Avatar” slated for release on August 27, the film’s star, Sam Worthington, hinted at what could be in the film’s extra eight minutes during a press day for Full Clip Productions , the comic-book imprint Worthington launched with his partners John Schwarz and Michael Schwarz at Radical Studios. “There were several different hunts that the characters go on,” Worthington told MTV. “There’s a sex scene that everyone keeps talking about, which is going to be unique,” he added, laughing. “But there’s a lot of other stuff to do with the Na’vi, and then there’s also a lot of live-action stuff as well.” Since it became the biggest movie of all time, James Cameron has been largely mum on details about a follow-up to his 2009 blockbuster “Avatar,” probably due less to secrecy than the long gaps between his projects. In the meantime, Fox announced earlier this week that it will re-release the film in theaters with eight new minutes of footage. Although the running time of the original cut of the film was well over two hours, Worthington indicated that any excised footage was removed because it was already long enough, and Cameron didn’t want to push the audiences’ patience too far. “That [material] got taken out because of time constraints, and at the time, not knowing if the movie was going to be successful or not.” It remains to be seen how much more of “Avatar” audiences will want to see, at least in theaters. And although Cameron hasn’t volunteered more than vague details about sequels, it will be interesting to see how quickly even its most fervent fans will move on to thoughts of a follow-up. But Worthington indicated that if the director wanted to release more versions that are eight minutes longer than the last one, he could probably do so for years to come without exhausting his yet-unseen supply. “I think he’s got another eight hours of footage, to be honest with you,” Worthington said. “So I’ll be surprised to see what the eight minutes is.” Will you see the extended version of “Avatar”? Red Dead Redemption To Receive Massive Promotional Campaign

There are many comparisons to be made between Rockstar Games’ upcoming western title Red Dead Redemption and the developers’ money-printing Grand Theft Auto series. It’s no wonder then that Rockstar plans to throw an unprecedented amount of support behind the game. Rockstar general manager Neil Stephen recently told MCVUK that not only will the developer be “spending a larger proportion of our TV budget pre-launch than we ever have before,” but Red Dead will be the first game Rockstar will promote on the big screen. “We think the cinematic nature of the game makes it a perfect fit for cinema and we will be executing a nationwide ad campaign targeting the audiences of Robin Hood , Iron Man 2 and Prince of Persia .” There will also be movie theatre posters that will somehow let you download game content via Bluetooth, and Rockstar has also made deals with IGN , Gamespot , YouTube, Microsoft and LoveFilm to give away movie downloads and Xbox Live content. Considering Rockstar sees Red Dead Redemption as the official jumping off point for their “next blockbuster gaming franchise,” it’s no wonder they’re throwing so much ad support behind it. Guess we’ll find out if it pays off next month when the game moseys onto store shelves. Source: MCVUK (via Gamasutra ) Red Dead Redemption – Microsoft – Grand Theft Auto – Game – Rockstar Games
