Beautiful. Sublime. Stunning. These are not usually words I usually associate with video game trailers (though there are exceptions [1]), but they could all be used to describe the newest trailer for Dead Island. Techland is the developer behind the game, but it’s had a pretty rough history; it was originally supposed to be released way back in 2008 on PC and on Xbox 360. Nonetheless, you can bet people… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : /Film Discovery Date : 16/02/2011 22:50 Number of articles : 3

Weekly Wrap Up: iPad Edition

The big news of the week: The iPad! Apple’s tablet was the total rage, with the faithful lining up to buy their own copy, and the rest of the world either feeling left out or snorting derisively (while secretly feeling left out.) But we tore ourselves away from our devices long enough to make the awesome web shows below for you. Feedback:

8-Bit Bear – The Dark Void Zero Soundtrack Review

With the release of the soundtrack for Dark Void Zero , I am now firmly convinced Bear McCreary is either a genius or a time traveler. McCreary has so uncannily captured the feeling and tone of the mid-1980’s game scene with this 8-bit soundtrack, that you would swear his name is just a pseudonym and he is actually a member of the Konami Square Wave Club of composers, who has come forward in time to remind gamers of their sonic roots. Ok, that’s not fair, because as we all know he is a highly accomplished composer in his own right. However, the music for Dark Void Zero is another reason why we should hope he treads from the film and TV score world, back into the realm of game music, sooner rather than later. Click the time travel link below and listen why. When I reviewed Bear McCreary’s soundtrack album for Dark Void earlier this year, I pointed out how I hoped the inclusion of an 8-bit rendering of his theme for the game wouldn’t over shadow the orchestral music he created. And while his music for Dark Void is some of the best sounding game soundtrack material released so far this year, McCreary’s 8-bit sounds for Dark Void Zero are even more magical in their own retro-tastic way. Where the Dark Void soundtrack’s 8-bit version of the game’s theme was very short, with Dark Void Zero , we get a glorious, nearly two minute version of McCreary’s theme song. If you haven’t heard it before now, you would be forgiven for thinking this was found in some dusty vault in a game studio in Japan. Watch Larger Version of this Video Next up we have “Valley of Doom” which is an upbeat piece, incorporating the overarching Dark Void Zero music motifs, just as McCreary did in the music for its parent game. The shuffle of the percussion supports the shifting melodies quite nicely. Watch Larger Version of this Video “Scientific Complex” sounds like it could trace its inspirational roots into the early iterations of the Castlevania series. What starts off slow, quickly builds into a high speed arpeggiated 8-bit sci-fi romp. Watch Larger Version of this Video If you haven’t played Dark Void Zero yet, it is a heck of a lot of fun on the DSi and now PC, iPhone and iPad gamers get a chance to go retro with the game starting Monday. Even better news is Bear McCreary’s ludicrously awesome soundtrack for the game is available for download from Sumthing Digital for a measly $1.99 ! Since the music of the 8-bit era was so important to video games, here is hoping Dark Void Zero developer Other Ocean brings back Bear McCreary (or at least someone with his passion for this sound), should they decide to release more games like this.

X-Play: Top 5 Intro Videos of All Time

A game’s opening cinematic is crucial to establishing plot, tone and pretty much everything else the game will deliver over the course of the experience. Or it can just be over-the-top ridiculous and share little to no resemblance to what’s actually going to follow. The point is, there have been tons of memorable game intros over the years, and the folks over at X-Play have compiled their top five favorites into one memory lane-strolling video of their own. Why, here it comes now… Watch Larger Version | Watch HD Version

Modern Warfare 2 and Mass Effect 2 Characters Infect Left 4 Dead

I love my homebuilt rig because the PC always wins when it comes to pure customization. Case in point: the clever folks that leveraged the character models from Mass Effect 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and integrated them into the zombie apocalypse, Left 4 Dead 2 . Unfortunately, no one has yet to integrate voice samples in game, but holding back the horde with Ghost or having Tali help you get back on your feet is kinda cool. Ex-Infinity Ward Leaders To Discuss Their "Creative Future" Soon

What’s next for Jason West and Vince Zampella, the former heads of Infinity Ward? We may have the answer soon. The duo’s lawyer released a statement to the LA Times that promises an “announcement very soon” that directly addresses the “creative future” of both developers. The statement pushes back at Activision’s lawsuit and paints Zampella and West in a positive light during the now-past negotiating phase with their former publisher. “Activision itself proposed spinning off Infinity Ward when, last year, it sought to renegotiate Jason and Vince’s contract,” reads the statement, “and induce them to forego developing a new game in favor of doing another Modern Warfare sequel. Jason and Vince had hired the Creative Artists Agency to advise them in their negotiations with Activision, and not to breach their contract.” Activision alleges West and Zampella were conversing with the company’s “closest competitor,” widely believed to be Electronic Arts. Whether the upcoming announcement is connected to EA is anybody’s guess, but it wouldn’t be the first time Activision and EA went head-to-head.

RIP Malcolm McLaren: Punk Rock Icon, 8-Bit Music Pioneer

We lost one of music’s true innovators yesterday. While Malcolm McLaren, may not be a name on the tips of the tongues of some post-Gen-Y’ers who might consider uploading the first Britney Spears album onto their ipods as “kickin’ it old school,” it is nonetheless an important name in music history who has even recently helped in the proliferation of 8-Bit music as an art form. McLaren, who succumbed to cancer at age 64, has made an influencial stamp that is still evident, even to those who may not have known who he was. “Mad, misunderstood genius” is a status that has been thrown around quite a bit to artists whose work was either hated or loathed. McLaren definitely fit that mold. (And understandably so.) The man who has been called “The King of Punk” came from beginnings as a London-based counter-culture clothier in the early 70’s. That path had somehow quickly taken him to briefly going stateside to manage punk pioneer act The New York Dolls, to being the creative marketing force who assembled The Sex Pistols, possibly the most definitive and seminal (albeit crudely stereotypical) vision of how “Punk Rock” would later be defined. The Sex Pistols, were, perhaps the greatest example of a proverbial middle finger to what he referred to as a “karaoke culture” that dominates pop music — especially today. In essence, the Pistols were just as much a concoction of strategic marketing as any other artificial pop or “boy” band that has ever existed. Yet, McLaren seemed to revel in the idea of agitation for agitation’s sake, and the Pistols, in their brief existence, certainly left their mark with outrageous lyrics and stunts during Punk’s late 70’s heyday. (Stunts like a public record contract signing outside Buckingham Palace pictured above.) It was a sort of nihilism that, while lacking a true ethos, reveled in the idea of life’s absurdities. While Socrates compared the truth-seeking nature of philosophy to a fly constantly stinging a horse, McLaren’s art carried the vanity of being petulant youth in perpetual dissent, always devoid of any societal responsibility. Perhaps, that idea, if anything, of “not giving a f**k” was the essence of what was dubbed “Punk Rock.” Releasing music in his own right, he was an unlikely early purveyor of the genre that would become known as Hip-Hop, with early 80’s hits like “Buffalo Gals” and “Double Dutch.” Throughout his own musical career, McLaren would embrace any form of music that stood out — even Opera ! However, in recent years, his attention had turned to what is known as “Chip” or “8-Bit” Music. He became fixated on the idea of extracting sound blips and bleeps from old, abandoned video game consoles and using them as makeshift media for music that continued to be a proverbial middle finger to the “karaoke culture.” As McLaren stated in a piece he contributed to Wired in 2003 : “Karaoke and authenticity can sit well together, but it takes artistry to make that happen. When it does, the results can be explosive. Like when punk rock reclaimed rock and roll, blowing the doors off the recording industry in the process. Or when hip hop transformed turntables and records into the instruments of a revolution. Now it’s happening again. In dance clubs across Europe and America, young people are seizing the automated stuff of their world – handheld game machines, obsolete computers, anything with a sound chip – and forging a new kind of folk music for the digital age.” The idea of making due with forgotten “low-tech” objects seemed to catch on with him as being in tune with the essence of his own brand of counter-cultural leanings. Was he a genius? I’m certainly not sure. Did any stunt he ever pulled have some deeper ideological or ethical meaning? Who knows? However, he was an undeniably important link in the evolution of Rock music from the stages of Punk to New Wave to Alternative to…whatever it is we have today. I’d say that was worth an acknowledgment and a brief music history refresher. RIP. malcolmmclaren – Sex Pistols – punkrock – Britney Spears – Buckingham Palace

Activsion Files Lawsuit Against Ex-Infinity Ward Leadership — Hint: They’re Upset

Activision is not taking kindly to the legal accusations from the former heads of Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward. The LA Times acquired the Activision counterargument, filed this morning, and it shows a publisher fully prepared to take on both Vince Zampella and Jason West. The suit, which says Activision will withhold future royalty payments the duo are seeking, claims Vince and Zampella both “morphed from valued, responsible executives into insubordinate and self-serving schemers who attempted to hijack Activision’s assets for their own personal gain.” Electronic Arts came up in a memo acquired by G4 when the news first broke. Activision suspected West and Zameplla were in discussions with the major Activision competitor, and while Activision doesn’t call out EA by name in the suit, they allude to the supposed discussions. Activision alleges the two went “on a secret trip by private jet to Northern California, arranged by their Hollywood agent [West and Zampella are now represented by the powerful Creative Arts Agency], to meet with the most senior executives of Activision’s closest competitor.” Clearly, Activision isn’t about to pay the demands of their former developer royalty without a fight. How these legal filings interfere with West and Zampella forming a new studio are unknown. Source: LA Times Have something to share? Sitting on a news tip? E-mail me .
