OpenFeint Wasn’t Briefed On Apple’s Game Center Reveal, But Expected It

The developers of the many existing social game networks on iPhone and iPod Touch got a surprise during Apple’s iPhone OS 4.0 unveiling yesterday: Apple’s entering their territory. Apple announced Game Center, a cross-platform, cross-game service not unlike Xbox Live and PlayStation Network that incorporates achievements, leaderboards, matchmaking — services that companies like ngmoco with Plus+ and Aurora Feint with OpenFent have been pushing themselves for months. Apple is secretive about its reveals, even to its developers. OpenFeint found out about Apple’s Game Center plans, effectively destroying the usefulness of many like services, with the rest of us. “We were not aware of the [Apple Game Center] announcement but, like many in our space, we’ve been anticipating it for quite some time,” said OpenFeint VP of marketing and developer relations Eros Resmini to me over e-mail yesterday. “We view it as a validation of what we’ve been working so hard to support: a fantastic mobile gaming experience.” Both OpenFeint and ngmoco have announced plans to move from attempting to become the standardized social gaming network across Apple devices to supplying developers with robust tools to better deliver virtual goods and microtransactions in their games, a new field for iPhone games. “Things change quickly in a rapidly moving space like mobile gaming,” said Resmini. “We’re used to it. If you look at the gaming ecosystem as a whole it’s clear that there are multiple ways to participate. Running a social graph tied to a network like OpenFeint is just one of them. Plugging into a social graph like we do with OpenFeint X, our hosted solution for running Facebook style games on mobile devices, is another one.” Despite the change of focus, Resmini isn’t worried about the future of OpenFeint. “We have more ideas than you can imagine,” he promised. Game Center won’t launch until sometime this summer, however, when iPhone OS 4.0 is scheduled for release. It won’t hit iPad until later in the fall for unknown reasons. In the interim, Resmini promised it would continue to work with developers on supporting OpenFeint and transitioning to the future. “We will continue to work with our developers to ensure that OpenFeint plays well with the new Apple ecosystem,” concluded Resmini. “We’ll also continue to focus on our premium services of OpenFeint X and hosted Multiplayer. Much more to come!” Have something to share? Sitting on a news tip? E-mail me . You can also follow me on Twitter . Aurora Feint – IpodTouch – Apple – iPhone – OpenFeint

UPDATE 4:09 PM: Aurora Feint, creators of OpenFeint, have taken a similar stance as ngmoco. Warhammer Online Inadvertently Adds Charges To Players’ Credit Cards

If you play Warhammer Online , you should check your bank account, quick. Yesterday, gamers started flooding Mythic Entertainment’s Warhammer Online forum with reports that the company billed them repeatedly for services they neither requested nor wanted. Some report multiple charges that add up to over $1,000. Of course many gamers don’t have that kind of cash sitting in their account, and that means many were also charged overdraft fees. Mythic quickly responded, reassuring (?) gamers that it is a billing error, and not a hack, all monies will be returned, and their personal and financial information is safe. Andy Belford, Mythic

F.E.A.R. 3 Confirmed, Monolith No Longer Involved

Alma is back for another round of first-person horror with F.E.A.R. 3 from Day 1 Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC later this fall. Day 1 Studios, you ask? Original developer Monolith, owned by Warner Bros., does not appear to be developing the third installment. Day 1 Studios, the developer of MechAssault and most recently Fracture , is not new to the series, however; they ported F.E.A.R. to Xbox 360 and PS3. Monolith has not totally disappeared from the picture, though. The press release states the studio is a collaborative partner with Day 1 Studios. 3. Day 1 Studios is the one calling the shots. Perhaps most interestingly, Warner Bros. has enlisted the help of legendary horror director John Carpenter ( Halloween, They Live ) and Steve Niles ( 30 Days of Night ) to oversee the horror aspects. In addition to the return of Alma, F.E.A.R. 3 will introduce “divergent co-op,” where each character has distinctly different abilities. These abilities don’t just affect the enemy in front of you, either, apparently. Each co-op partner will have abilities that affect their co-op partner. The co-op characters available are Point Man, “a genetically enhanced super soldier originally introduced in F.E.A.R. ,” and his brother, Paxton Fettel, a dead man with telekenetic powers. Tech Review: AVADirect Gaming PC

Watch Larger Version | Watch HD Version Usually budgeting and gaming PCs don’t go hand in hand, but AVADirect is out to change all of that with their gaming PC rigs. Kevin Pereira and Olivia Munn review this computer with its Intel Quad Core processor, 4 gigs of DDR3 RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5770 video card for under $1,000. Find the full review from Gadget Pron on Attack of the Show after the cut. What You Need to Know This is one of the smallest gaming towers we’ve ever reviewed at just over 1’ tall. It’s only 6” wide. The computer can be rotated to work on its side or as a tower. AVADirect did a great job of cable managing everything so it looks clean. There’s enough room for a huge video card (like the ATI we used in the review). You might have trouble getting RAM in the slot next to the heatsink, because it’s so big. There is also only one slot for video cards, so you won’t be able to expand with a second card. Overall, though, we were surprised with the amount of space in the case. It blows through games like Battlefield Bad Company 2 ; we maxed out pretty much every setting and it looks amazing. In our normal 3DMark Vantage Tests, it performed really well, scoring about 10,700 points. Price $1,000 We can finally recommend an affordable system that will play any new game on the market well. We are also really impressed with what AVADirect can do on a budget. Overall Rating 4 Seals of Approval Out of 5 ( How do we rate gadgets? ) Click here to order the gaming PC from the AVADirect website . Don’t forget to enter “AOTS” in the discount field on the shopping cart form, and then update your order total for a $25 discount!

The Verdict: Mass Effect 2: Kasumi – Stolen Memory PDLC

I’m not sure how I feel about EA and Bioware’s new DLC strategy these days. At first, I loved the idea of incremental content which added an hour here, an hour there to games that I already enjoy but now that I’ve played it that way, I’m not sure it’s working. To be fair, Kasumi – Stolen Memory , the first of Mass Effect 2 ’s premium DLC, is a fine addition to the ME2 universe. Ringing in at about $7, Stolen Memory introduces a new character, Kasumi Goto, a master thief with the ability to cloak herself to stealthily dispatch bad guys. While Kasumi can simply become a member of your crew, it’s her loyalty mission that adds new content to the game with a heist mission that plays out as one part covert op spy thriller, one part action shooter. As a change of pace from other Mass Effect 2 missions, the idea of gathering DNA to thwart a security vault’s sensor is clever, but in execution, it boils down to running around clicking on hotspots or brief dialog trees to elicit voice password samples. Great on paper, kind of lousy in-game. To be clear, I’m totally onboard for a less run-and-gun experience in these types of games, which is why I’m hopeful that Alpha Protocol comes together; I just didn’t feel like this aspect of the PDLC really met its potential. If it allowed for more strategy or multiple options in how to solve a problem, I’d have been more of a fan but everything seemed a little too straight-forward. Of course, not all goes to plan and eventually the mission devolves into a firefight, which really showcases Kasumi’s abilities. Her Shadow Strike cloaking ability is a great way to thin out soldiers, and combined with my Dominate skill, I was able to walk all over the Eclipse soldiers and mechs to the end scenario of the mission. It’s just Kasumi and yourself, so you may want to make sure you have the right equipment to take on shielded or barrier-infused foes. I won’t spoil what comes later, but the action was satisfying all the way through and ends on a nice note.
