Now that NFL lockout has ended, EA ‘able to flip the switch on roster updates pretty easily,’ rep says. By Russ Frushtick Madden NFL 12 Photo: EA Sports What would the world be like without football? Thankfully, fans needn’t concern themselves with such a horrible scenario (at least for another 10 years), as NFL owners and the NFL Players Association came to an agreement to end a months-long standoff that might have cancelled the 2011-2012 season. Because the lockout ended early enough, there will be no impact on the season itself, but what about this year’s installment of “Madden”? “Madden NFL 12” is scheduled to be released in about a month, but video games are often finalized months before they hit store shelves. Does that mean anyone who buys “Madden” will be playing with out-of-date rosters from before the lockout was even settled? Anthony Stevenson, the director of marketing for “Madden NFL 12,” discussed how the development team is planning to keep everything up-to-date for fans. “From the game’s standpoint, what everyone wants to know is rosters,” he said. “You’re taking what historically would be five months of offseason activity and you’re condensing it into what would be as little as two to three weeks. So, there are going to be a lot of roster moves. And these aren’t inconsequential moves: There’s Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb; these are moves that could shape a division. But we’re fortunate that we’re able to flip the switch on roster updates pretty easily.” Mike Young, the game’s creative director, confirmed that the rosters would be up-to-date not only at the beginning of the season, but also straight on through to the Super Bowl. “Our ratings people and our roster guys are going to be really, really busy,” he said. “Day one, anybody with an online connection is going to have all these moves and up-to-date rosters. All season long, we’ll support that really well.” Young confirmed that while the rosters and player stats will be up-to-date, EA won’t be able to implement all of the just-agreed-upon rules. “Some of the new rules we will not get in the game this year. Unfortunately, [the end of the lockout] happened too late,” he explained. “It’s kind of a complicated system to change with something like a patch.” As for which new rules didn’t make the cut, Young revealed, “The rookie cap stuff, a lot of the business part of football. So your Franchise mode will be using last year’s rules for another year. That was the only disappointment. But, as far as rosters, I think we’re the best at having those up-to-date.” Those roster updates will require an Internet connection for your console. If you don’t have your console hooked up to the Internet, Young suggested taking advantage of nearby gamers. “Take it over to your friend’s house, plug it in,” he recommended. “There are a lot of free trials for Xbox Live and PSN [PlayStation Network] is free. Update your game, save it to your hard drive, and bring it home. You need the rosters!” Certainly, fans who are just thrilled to have an NFL season will consider updated rosters the cherry on top. The developers of the many existing social game networks on iPhone and iPod Touch got a surprise during Apple’s iPhone OS 4.0 unveiling yesterday: Apple’s entering their territory. Apple announced Game Center, a cross-platform, cross-game service not unlike Xbox Live and PlayStation Network that incorporates achievements, leaderboards, matchmaking — services that companies like ngmoco with Plus+ and Aurora Feint with OpenFent have been pushing themselves for months. Apple is secretive about its reveals, even to its developers. OpenFeint found out about Apple’s Game Center plans, effectively destroying the usefulness of many like services, with the rest of us. “We were not aware of the [Apple Game Center] announcement but, like many in our space, we’ve been anticipating it for quite some time,” said OpenFeint VP of marketing and developer relations Eros Resmini to me over e-mail yesterday. “We view it as a validation of what we’ve been working so hard to support: a fantastic mobile gaming experience.” Both OpenFeint and ngmoco have announced plans to move from attempting to become the standardized social gaming network across Apple devices to supplying developers with robust tools to better deliver virtual goods and microtransactions in their games, a new field for iPhone games. “Things change quickly in a rapidly moving space like mobile gaming,” said Resmini. “We’re used to it. If you look at the gaming ecosystem as a whole it’s clear that there are multiple ways to participate. Running a social graph tied to a network like OpenFeint is just one of them. Plugging into a social graph like we do with OpenFeint X, our hosted solution for running Facebook style games on mobile devices, is another one.” Despite the change of focus, Resmini isn’t worried about the future of OpenFeint. “We have more ideas than you can imagine,” he promised. Game Center won’t launch until sometime this summer, however, when iPhone OS 4.0 is scheduled for release. It won’t hit iPad until later in the fall for unknown reasons. In the interim, Resmini promised it would continue to work with developers on supporting OpenFeint and transitioning to the future. “We will continue to work with our developers to ensure that OpenFeint plays well with the new Apple ecosystem,” concluded Resmini. “We’ll also continue to focus on our premium services of OpenFeint X and hosted Multiplayer. Much more to come!” Have something to share? Sitting on a news tip? E-mail me . You can also follow me on Twitter . Aurora Feint – IpodTouch – Apple – iPhone – OpenFeint
Apple announced plans today to roll out their own system-wide social gaming network across iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad called Game Center. Several of these networks already exist — i.e. Plus+, OpenFeint — each vying for the attention of developers and consumers, hoping their network catches on and becomes the de facto platform standard. Instead, it looks like Apple will take that spot. What does this mean for companies like Plus+ developer ngmoco (aka the studio behind your latest obsession, We Rule )? Besides games, ngmoco’s been focused on pushing Plus+, one of the many social gaming networks that’s popped up in a number of games, attempting to tie them together. ngmoco president Simon Jeffery is actually applauding Apple’s efforts to unify their platform. “Game Center is an exciting first-party innovation for the ecosystem that reinforces much of what plus+ has already accomplished and proven out early in its life cycle,” said Jeffery in a n e-mail statement released to me this afternoon. “It will effectively clean up the social space on the iPhone, which has become confusing and cluttered to consumers due to the number of social gaming networks vying for attention. ngmoco has anticipated this move from Apple for some time, and is happy to see a cleaner developer and consumer experience on the horizon.” Plus+ incorporates achievements and friends lists across all of ngmoco’s games and other titles. Game Center will do this, too. ngmoco was one of the first companies to try and bring the vision of Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and other unifying online services to Apple’s expanding games platforms. Here’s why Jeffery doesn’t foresee Game Center tearing down what they’ve accomplished so far. “As we demonstrated at the recent GDC [Game Developers Conference], plus+ took a strategic shift in direction a few months ago toward being a service, and less about being a set of social gaming features,” he explained, while noting the recent hire of MySpace exec. Jason Oberfest. “plus+ is all about empowering monetization and discoverability mechanisms for the development community, and we have clearly demonstrated with games like We Rule that these mechanisms work.” ngmoco’s Plus+ might have started as Xbox Live for iPhone, but that’s not the case anymore, a vision no doubt accelerated by today’s news and understanding that Apple will likely dominate the space. iPhone OS 4.0, which includes the addition of Game Center, is scheduled for a summer launch. A private beta is now available for developers. The iPad version of the OS is coming in the fall. Have something to share? Sitting on a news tip? E-mail me . You can also follow me on Twitter . UPDATE 4:09 PM: Aurora Feint, creators of OpenFeint, have taken a similar stance as ngmoco. From a just released statement: “OpenFeint X is currently built on top of OpenFeint and in the future it will also sit on Apple’s Game Center social graph, achievements and leaderboards so developers and gamers don’t miss a step,” said CEO
In addition to giving everyone around the G4 offices a little taste of Scandinavian despair via various types of disturbing candy, developer Fatshark really showed us a great time when they stopped by a few months back to show off their downloadable shooter Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West . And while it was announced a couple weeks ago that the game would be hitting the PC (on Steam, $14.99) April 8, the status of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions has been a mystery. Well, Fatshark CEO Martin Wahlund recently told Joystiq that the multiplayer western will hit PlayStation Network in late April, and Xbox Live Arcade sometime thereafter. Fatshark has said it plans to support the game with post-launch downloadable content, and I don’t think they’d release DLC unless all versions of the game are out, so chances are the XBLA version can’t be that far off. The game is a blast, so the more channels it’s available on, the better. Source: Joystiq Lead & Gold: Gangs of the Wild West – Fatshark – PlayStation Network – Xbox Live Arcade – PlayStation 3
Apple was smart to open the doors to the iPad section of the iTunes App Store ahead of the actual launch of the iPad, as it’s giving consumers and content makers a chance to see what people are willing to pay for iPad games right out of the gate. Right now, the top end for games is $14.99. At the moment, Electronic Arts is asking $14.99 for Need For Speed Shift and Activision’s charging the same price for the iPad version of Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies . Access Need For Speed
