VMA nominee’s voice sounds mature, but he tones down the lyrics. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Jesse Grant/ WireImage Justin Bieber and Drake are certainly besties, and on Sunday (August 28), Bieber dropped his version of Drake’s “Trust Issues,” just in time for both guys to make appearances at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles. While he maintains much of the integrity of the song musically, Bieber does clean up the language, swapping some of the more-adult lines for PG-rated versions. Instead of the original’s “I’mma sip until I feel it, I’mma smoke it till it’s done,” Bieber sings, “I’mma sing until I feel it, I’mma go till it’s done.” Later, the Biebs sings, “You just need to listen, I’ll teach you how to fix it/ But you’re the only one, ’cause I don’t trust these women/ I don’t, I don’t trust these women.” Drake’s original verse? “You know what I’m sippin’, I teach you how to mix it/ But you’re the only one, ’cause I don’t trust these bitches/ I don’t, I don’t trust these bitches.” The song still does keep some of its lyrical edge when Drake makes an appearance via samples from the original track. While the lyrics might be very different from Drake’s original — which will appear on his next album, Take Care, due in October — the aspect of Bieber’s track that will stand out to his loyal devotees is the singer’s voice: It’s much deeper than what fans have heard from him in the past. Bieber is nominated for one Moonman at the 2011 VMAs: Best Male Video for “U Smile.” His competition includes Eminem, Cee-Lo, Bruno Mars and Kanye West. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. ‘These are all people who have their own movements,’ the ‘Black and Yellow’ MC says of fellow nominees. By Rob Markman Wiz Khalifa Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Let’s be clear, while Wiz Khalifa has respect for his fellow Best New Artist nominees, he fully excepts to beat out the competition on Sunday night at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards . “I’m trying to crush everybody,” the Rolling Papers MC told MTV News from the red carpet of the BMI Urban Awards in Los Angeles on Friday. “No disrespect, just crush them and do what I do.” Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” video is up against tourmate Big Sean’s “My Last,” Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci,” Tyler, the Creator’s “Yonkers” and indie-pop band Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks.” “I think it’s really good competition, and it’s just a good sign of the new wave of how an artist can come up and get recognition these days,” Khalifa told MTV News in July when he first learned of the nomination. “Big Sean, I know his situation, how he came from nothing. Kreayshawn, she built her buzz similar with the Internet, and Tyler as well. These are all people who have their own movements.” Aside from his nomination, Wiz is just looking forward to some memorable moments at the VMAs. “I expect some real big performances, I expect some shockers, man. Some big things, people usually pull out all the stops at the VMAs,” he said. “That’s a big deal so I expect some entertainment.” Voting for the Best New Artist continues through the show, which airs live on Sunday (August 28) at 9 p.m. ET. I think we can expect a little bit of everything in this performance.” Backed by a full band, the Cash Money Billionaire ran through his set, which included a heavy-metal take on one of his songs. Demi tells MTV News why she’s looking forward to Britney’s VMA tribute. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: MTV News Britney Spears is set to get the tribute treatment this Sunday at the 2011 Video Music Awards . At 29, she may be younger than your typical awards show tribute subject, but looking back at Brit’s catalog of great videos and memorable VMA moments , we think she deserves it. As part of the new generation of pop stars following in Britney’s footsteps, Demi Lovato is pretty excited to see how the icon will be honored on Sunday night. “Who isn’t a Britney Spears fan?” Lovato asked, just days before the show goes live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. “My favorite Britney Spears song is ‘I Wanna Go,’ ’cause it’s the latest song that she has and I love it.” Go behind the scenes as Britney films her 2011 VMA promo. Since Spears first took the VMA stage back in 1999, alongside ‘NSYNC, she’s managed to rack up five performances and take home four Moonmen, the first of which was back in 2008, over 11 years after her first appearance on the show. At this year’s show, she’s up for two awards for her video for “Till The World Ends,” Best Pop Video and Best Choreography. Demi has a simpler reason for a Britney tribute: ” ‘Cause she’s the ultimate pop star; nobody can touch her,” Lovato said. “She’s been around for such a long time now and she’s the epitome of pop. So when I think of pop music, I think of her.” While Demi is gushing about Brit’s long pop career, she’s poised to launch the next phase of her own. She will drop her album Unbroken next month. Its lead single, “Skyscraper,” rocketed to the top of the charts when it was released earlier this summer. What are you hoping to see in the Britney Spears tribute? And as she prepares to take the stage at Sunday night’s VMAs , where she’s nominated for seven awards for the smash hit from her breakthrough effort, “Rolling in the Deep,” she can also take heart in knowing that a lot of her fellow divas are crushing on her as well. “She’s a breath of fresh air and she’s so exciting and her music is adding another dimension to radio that’s so important,” Lady Gaga, who is opening the 2011 VMAs , told MTV News. “She’s [also] a truly lovely person — which, to me, is always my favorite.” Whether they’re enamored with her powerful singing voice, her sweet disposition or her stirring live performances, Adele has plenty of other professional admirers. “I’m so proud [of her],” said “Price Tag” singer and pal Jessie J, who will be the house artist at Sunday’s VMAs . “I did go to school with Adele and she’s a good friend of mine, and I’m so proud of her and I’m so excited to see her. I definitely think she should win something this year. She deserves it.” “Victorious” star Victoria Justice is also a big fan. “I’m really excited to see Adele perform. … ‘Rolling in the Deep’ is amazing, but her new album, 21, is just really, really great. I’m excited to see her live. I think she’s so talented, and I’m so happy that she’s become this huge star.” In addition to her multiple nods, Adele will take the stage Sunday night to perform at the VMAs, along with Beyonc
‘Two of the best-dressed men in the business, what more can you ask for?’ Ne-Yo teases to MTV News. The video for the song, which also features Nayer and Afrojack, is also up for Best Pop Video and Best Collaboration. “This is my first time performing at the VMAs, so this is going to be big,” he pledged. “This was the show where, before I made it, where I was like, ‘When I make it, yeah, I definitely got to do that one.’ ” He continued, “And I’m here. I’m happy. I’m definitely beyond happy. I’m gonna maintain; very ecstatic to be here.” So, what should fans expect? “We have some backup dancers: one or two or 60,” Ne-Yo teased. “And two of the best-dressed men in the business, what more can you ask for?” While Pitbull and Ne-Yo are certain to make the Nokia their own party central, they’re not the only big names on the roster of VMA performers. Take a look at the nitty-gritty details of transforming a hotel lobby into an intergalactic fantasia. By Gil Kaufman Crew members assemble the 2011 VMA black carpet Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — It takes an army to build the massive set for the 2011 VMAs . And over the course of the last week, that tireless militia has been working around the clock to transform the lobby of the J.W. Marriott hotel in downtown Los Angeles into the intergalactic fantasia that will greet stars on Sunday night. The production has taken over just about every corner of the lobby, with lighting designers hanging a series of shimmering white curtains laced with more than 300 twinkly lights over a space that was previously a couch-filled lounging area. They’ve also laid down more than 12,000 square feet of black carpet throughout the lobby, covering the nearly 18,000 square feet of real estate the hotel has ceded to the production. Watch the black-carpet live stream to see the action as it unfolds! The first thing fans will see when they tune in to the VMA pre-show is the space-age “portal” celebs will be stepping through, a series of four undulating white shapes, the tallest of which is more than 16 feet high. That will eventually lead them to a 100 -foot long, glittering paparazzi plaza, where the night’s biggest names will face a sea of flashes. That space will be blazed by 1,700 silver-tipped incandescent bulbs that will light up the A-listers for their close-ups. VMA pre-show production designer Scott Storey promised that viewers at home would not see the same old “step-and-repeat” space they always get at the average awards show, and he wasn’t kidding. His vision of eight rib-cage-like towers that will “hug” the talent loom large, their wavy forms broken up by more than 40 pop-art-esque angular “pow” signs for this year’s awards show. The production crew also ensured that the whole thing would look fabulous by laying sheets of black plastic over more than 300 windows and doors on the front and back of the hotel. ‘That cat was disgusting. It would only poop in drains,’ Best New Artist nominee recalls of her pet as a teenager. By Kara Warner Kreayshawn Photo: MTV News This week’s new episode of “When I Was 17” is full of VMA Best New Artist nominees. Tune in to MTV on Saturday at 11 a.m. to hear stories of awkward teen memories from Big Sean , Tyler, the Creator and Kreayshawn. It wasn’t so long ago that 21-year-old hip-hop “it” girl Kreayshawn was 17 and starting out on her own. “When I was 17, I had saved up a little bit of money, and I got my first apartment,” Kreayshawn recalled. “Everyone knows I’m a cat person, so my friends surprised me with a cat. “This cat was definitely slow,” she continued. “It would crawl into the blinds, curl itself into the blinds and just sit there. Maybe it was trying to kill itself?” According to the “Gucci Gucci” rapper, the cat’s questionable behavior didn’t end there. “That cat was disgusting. It would only poop in drains,” she revealed, adding that it made taking showers particularly precarious and smelly. “You’d be taking a shower and the water would start backing up,” she said. “Even worse you’d have to dig it out from the drain. It was so gross.” With the days of questionable cat behavior and clogged drains behind her, for now, and on a cleaner and much more glamorous note, Kreayshawn will be bringing her outgoing personality and sass to the VMA red carpet as a host for MTV.com . “I’m super excited to be the red-carpet host at this year’s VMAs,” Kreayshawn said. “I can harass celebrities about what they’re wearing, what they ate before they got to the carpet, all sorts of funny stuff.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring VMA nominees Big Sean, Tyler, the Creator and Kreayshawn — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.
