Anne Hathaway Cast As Catwoman In ‘Dark Knight Rises’

Warner Bros. also reveals that Tom Hardy will play Batman villain Bane. By Eric Ditzian Anne Hathaway Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images Last week, word out of Gotham City was that five actresses were competing for possibly two roles in “The Dark Knight Rises” : Keira Knightley, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Biel, Kate Mara and Charlotte Riley. Now, one of those women officially has a job. Warner Bros. announced in a press release Wednesday (January 19) that Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle, a well-established character in DC Comics lore who is the alter-ego of Catwoman. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story,” director Christopher Nolan said in the press release. Hathaway’s turn on the character will come as only the latest take. Catwoman has previously appeared on both the big and small screens, most recently as played by Michelle Pfeiffer in 1992’s “Batman Returns” and Halle Berry in 2004’s “Catwoman.” In addition to this major casting news, Warner Bros. finally announced the identity of the character that Tom Hardy, who signed on to the project back in October , will play: the mighty villain Bane, bringing the character back to the screen for the first time since 1997’s “Batman & Robin.” “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies,” said Nolan, who previously directed Hardy in “Inception.” Based on a script Nolan wrote with his brother, Jonathan, “The Dark Knight Rises” is set to hit theaters July 20, 2012. ‘Tourist’ Star Angelina Jolie Talks Catwoman, Working With Brad Pitt

During our rapid-fire questions, MTV News also asks about Lady Gaga, ‘American Idol’ and retirement. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Angelina Jolie Photo: MTV News It’s time to play “Address That Rumor” with Angelina Jolie! Interviews with the Oscar winner don’t come along every day, and when you actually have the opportunity to chat with her, you’ve got to maximize your time. Thus, when MTV News sat down with Jolie in Paris while she was promoting “The Tourist,” we took the opportunity to throw out some rapid-fire questions about upcoming projects, persistent rumors and pop-culture preferences. OK, Angie, let’s get down to business! Rumor has it that your husband, Brad Pitt, is going to have a cameo in your directorial debut, a drama set during the Bosnian war. True or false? Jolie: “Possibly.” Cryptic! Moving on: There’s another Jolie/Pitt rumor floating around the Web, this one that you guys will reunite onscreen for “The Tiger,” possibly directed by “Black Swan” helmer Darren Aronofsky. Yes or no? Jolie: “I don’t really know much about that, but I love Darren Aronofsky.” Fair enough. Christopher Nolan is hard at work on his third “Batman” film, “The Dark Knight Rises,” and the Internet has decided you’d be perfect to play Catwoman. Whatcha think? Jolie: “I haven’t heard anything about it, but I thought they did it.” Well, yes — once with Michelle Pfeiffer in Tim Burton’s “Batman Returns” and again with Halle Berry in 2004’s “Catwoman” — but never in Nolan’s version of the franchise. Jolie: “I see. Thank you. Flattering.” Enough with rumors, Miss Jolie. Let’s talk about leisure-time activities: Do you prefer “American Idol” or “The X Factor”? Jolie: “I’m not really familiar with both. I would assume ‘X Factor’? But I’m not sure what I’m saying!” Oh, awkward. We promise we’re almost done! Lady Gaga or Kanye West? Jolie: “Ask my kids!” Lame! And finally, when it comes down to it, will you ever retire or will you act to the bitter end? Jolie: “Retirement. Certainly not act to the bitter end. I’d like to think I’d do other things.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Tourist.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
