Also in Thursday’s round-up of news, the Palm Springs International Film Festival sets its lineup including opening and closing titles; Sundance unveiled its competition juries; and release dates are set for Arnold Schwarzenegger ‘s Ten and Paramount’s Anchorman sequel. The Dark Knight Rises Most Watched Movie Trailer in 2012 The film ranked highest of any film related trailer, placing third followed by Skyfall (4th), Ted (5th) and Hunger Games (6th). The top two spots in the rankings, based on how many times a cop was viewed, how long people stayed on the clip and how many times people searched for a clip instead of clicking on an ad, were two video games: Activision’s Call of Duty Black Ops 2 , Deadline reports . Thanks to absolutist firebrands such as Rand and Ron Paul , laissez-faire economic sentiment has been gaining momentum in the GOP for some time. But with the nomination of deficit hawk wunderkind — and notable Ayn Rand devotee — Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney’s running mate, movement libertarianism has officially been added to the Republican presidential platform. Regardless of whether Romney is elected and Ryan’s controversial budget proposals are made law, the rebranding has already created two decisive effects: first, it has excited the fiscal-conservative base enough to warrant representation at the penultimate level; and second, it has convinced swaths of more marginal voters, who vaguely recall skimming through Atlas Shrugged as undergrads, that they were ardent “objectivists” all along. In honor of the libertarian strain of Republicanism getting its RNC coronation this week, here are the top nine films that evoke a reverie for free markets and, in some cases, the dystopian nightmare that’s sure to follow if we ignore Rand’s literary prophecy. 1. Top Gun (1986): Many conservatives credit Ronald Reagan with bringing down the Berlin Wall and ending the Cold War. Cineastes know it was Maverick and Goose. The recently deceased Tony Scott’s pop art masterpiece did for capitalism what Eisenstein’s innovation of montage did for Bolshevism. (Just substitute the jittery stomping of horses with more photogenic F-16 fighter jets. Today’s audiences smirk at the towel-clad locker-room romping and blue-jeaned volleyball homoeroticism , but the convergence of “Danger Zone” aerial balletics and the mega-wattage of a then 23-year-old Tom Cruise is still enough to raise long-dormant goose-bumps for American exceptionalism.) 2. Casablanca (1942) : Humphrey Bogart’s Rick runs the best casino-bar in town, traffics in guns for African rebels, and appeases the Nazi occupation just to keep it all in the black. He is the archetype of the cutthroat entrepreneur: “I stick my neck out for nobody,” he unhesitatingly declares. Randians will rejoice as Rick wheels and deals in dubious moral territory with the stoic confidence of a man who believes doing what makes sense for Rick is the only true imperative. Just make sure to tune out before the last act when Bogey’s iconic hero contrives a plot for the good of humanity capped with the ultimate act of altruism: saying goodbye to Ingrid Bergman. 3. The Dark Knight Rises (2012): Yes, Christian Bale as Batman selflessly gives nearly everything to save his fellow Gothamites in the concluding chapter of Christopher Nolan’s magnum opus trilogy – including an attempt to develop a MacGuffin fusion technology. Free socialized energy for the whole world! Yet, the politics of Nolan’s franchise are more inscrutable than Bane’s face mask-muffled line readings. A short list of the thematic evocations, in no particular order, include: 9/11, the subprime crash, Occupy Wall Street, kangaroo-court tyranny, class warfare and vigilante justice. Alas, none of these threads cohere into a mission-statement that that transcends the film’s deafening soundtrack, or its grimly self-serious hero mythology. Because the leftist aspirations of Bruce Wayne are so dwarfed by the narrative’s hodge-podge of political themes, avowed libertarians should simply enjoy this film’s spectacular set-pieces while delighting in the bleak vision of a militarized proletariat revolution. Hint: it mostly involves sending the “productive class” on a short-walk over a thinly frozen East River.

The Farce is still strong in Seth Green and Matt Senreich. The boy geniuses behind Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken series joined collaborator Todd Grimes at Star Wars Celebration VI on Friday to unveil footage of their new animated series Star Wars: Detours . IGN reports that the comedic CGI animated series — which depicts the very familiar Star Wars crew in “exaggerated Chibi/super deformed style” (translation for the uninitiated: small bodies, massive heads) — takes place in-between Episodes III and IV of George Lucas’ Star Wars canon and will focus on the what these characters do in their downtime. “Where do Gamorrean Guards grocery shop? Does Darth Vader do online dating? The answer is yes,” Grimes told the gathered Star Wars super fans. ” We answer all these things.” Among the footage fans saw was Obi-Wan using a Jedi Mind Trick on his audience after he bombs at stand-up comedy. (“That joke was hilarious and you all liked it.”) In another scene, Jar Jar Binks asked Dexter Jettster why everyone hates him and Jettster replies by asking the Gungan how honest he wants him to be. According to IGN, the Star Wars: Detours team did not announce a debut date or even if they’d been picked up by a TV network yet, but the site estimated that the show would probably bow in 2013. That sounds promising. Earlier this year , when I spoke to Star Wars creator George Lucas — who was working with Green and his team, on the show — he told me: “We just can’t get anybody to put it on the air” because, he explained, the show doesn’t fit into a neat demographic package. Most movies get a soundtrack after they’ve been filmed. Boyd Tinsley doesn’t work that way. On Aug. 30, the violinist for the Dave Matthews Band will premiere Faces in the Mirror a film that was shot after Tinsley and a group of musicians that included Matthews, other DMB members and the groups Maktub and The Silent Comedy. Tinsley, who produced and conceived of the film, tells me that he’s wanted to make a movie ever since the band shot the Dean Karr-directed video to the DMB’s 1997 hit “Crash Into Me.” In December 2008, he explained, he took the first step by going into a studio with a hand-picked group of musicians. He explained to the musical artists that he had a bare-bones concept for a story of a young man dealing with the death of his estranged father. “I knew there was a rift and the father and the son lost contact, but I didn’t know everything about the story,” Tinsley said. “I didn’t know how it ended.” Having expressed this rough outline, Tinsley said, “I told them, ‘Go into the room and play from the heart. Don’t let your head come into it.” The musicians recorded over the next five days, much of it in between sessions for DMB’s 2009 album Big Whiskey & The GrooGrux King. “Everything you hear on the soundtrack happened in the moment. Music just materialized,” Tinsley said. “Things happened that just don’t happen.” First timer Aaron Farrington directed the moody, lushly shot film that was adapted to the music. Ryan Orr plays Ben Fisher, an angry young man who returns home to bury his long-estranged father. On the day of his dad’s funeral, Ben finds himself on a trippy, stranger-guided journey to self-realization, forgiveness and possibly love. “It’s raw and it’s real,” says Tinsley who will take part in a post-premiere concert after Faces in the Mirror premieres in Seattle on Aug. 30 at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. Snagfilms.com will webcast the film. You can check out the exclusive clip of the film here . There’s also a sizzle reel for the film that includes footage of Tinsley performing .
