Holy Macross, the first trailer for Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim is here, and I can’t believe what I’m seeing! Dimensional rifts, enormous monsters, and sweet sweet giant mechs battling it out over the streets of a large city while the helpless populace flees. Someone finally figured out how to update the kaiju genre without ruining it. Glory be! I’ve been keeping my powder dry on this since Del Toro isn’t always 100 percent successful making films that live up to his vision, but you know what? Done. I’m now an extreme religious fundamentalist for Pacific Rim . Watch this trailer and you will be too: “Today, we are canceling the apocalypse!” What a line, and considering the timing of the trailer, what a lovely middle finger to everyone ruining your Facebook feed with nonsense about Mayan calendar realignment. Pacific Rim looks like it lacks even a shred of knowing campiness or edgy BS; it just coasts on a sincere awesomeness of the sort we haven’t really seen since the ’70s, only with funding. It’s The Space Giants with humans controlling the robots! It’s Robot Jox with a budget. It’s the live action Robotech* movie we’ve been dreaming of since the ’80s. It’s anything you want it to be because it loves you more than anyone else ever could, and will probably send you your favorite cupcakes on your birthday. * Yes, we know Robotech was cobbled together from Macross , Mospeda and Southern Cross . If you claim to have seen any of them before you saw Robotech and you aren’t from Japan, I don’t believe you. Pacific Rim hits theaters July 12, 2013. By Amy Wilkinson Isabelle Fuhrman Photo: MTV News Few film roles in recent memory have been as hotly contested as the bow-and-arrow-wielding heroine of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian ” Hunger Games .” A year ago, it seemed every working actress in Hollywood under the age of 25 was auditioning for the role of Katniss Everdeen — a part that eventually went to Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence. But director Gary Ross was able to utilize at least one would-be Katniss, namely Isabelle Fuhrman, who plays District 2’s vicious tribute Clove. “I saw myself as Katniss, but I think everyone does when they read the book, because that’s the character that you related to so much because you’re seeing the whole story through her eyes,” Fuhrman told MTV News recently. “From page one, I was like, ‘Oh, I want to be Katniss so badly.’ That’s what I wrote in [a] letter to Gary, how much I wanted to play Katniss. I went in and actually auditioned for her, but I was too young because I [was] 14.” Of course, Fuhrman said there are no hard feelings between her and Lawrence, whom she described as the “perfect” Katniss. In fact, landing the role of Clove came with the bonus of learning a new (potentially lethal) skill: knife throwing. “I’m not going to be modest right now: I’m very good at it, and I’m very proud of that,” Fuhrman said with a grin. “That was so hard to learn how to do, because there is a lot of physics involved with it. The knife goes three knife-lengths each rotation, and [you have to] how much force you want to put into it so it lands with the blade in versus the butt. It was difficult, to say the least, because I did training for about only two weeks before we started shooting, so I had to pick it up pretty quickly.” You can witness Fuhrman’s nifty knife skills when “The Hunger Games” opens Friday. With Katy playing a Marine in the ‘Part of Me’ video and Rihanna joining the Navy in ‘Battleship,’ we ask Katy who would win in a throwdown. By James Montgomery Katy Perry Photo: MTV News Earlier this month, Rihanna showed off some impressive tats (and an even more impressive machine gun) on a brand-new poster for the upcoming not-entirely-based-on-a-board-game-mostly-because-they’ve-added-aliens blockbuster “Battleship,” and with it, basically claimed the bad-ass pop chick crown all for herself. At least until Wednesday, when Katy Perry unveiled her “Part of Me” video , in which she goes through boot camp and gets down and dirty (and we mean, actually down and dirty, like, in the mud and everything) with actual Marines at Camp Pendleton. And just like that, she served notice that RiRi wasn’t the only bad-ass on the block. But which of the two besties is actually the baddest? Does Rihanna’s Naval training top Katy’s Marine Corps skills? We asked Katy to settle the dispute once and for all. Though, to be fair, she mostly just wanted to talk about aliens. “I don’t even think [Rihanna] knows that I have a service-based video,” she said. “I saw a little clip of her in the [‘Battleship’] trailer — I’m very excited for that film, especially because there’s aliens in it now. It’s not, you know, ‘Battleship, your move, bro,’ it’s like aliens. I love aliens. “She’s an amazing actress, I think the ‘We Found Love’ video is so on point, especially how it’s delivered,” Perry continued. “Even though it’s controversial, it is exactly a moment in that person’s life, and it’s delivered so well. And you have to be a natural actress to be able to do that so I give her props.” OK, we suspect she’s just being polite, which is why asked her once again about battling it out with the Bajan beauty. And let’s just say Katy likes her chances. “Concerning a throwdown, I don’t know. … She’s super hood, but the thing about me is that people don’t expect me to be super hood,” Perry laughed. “But I just did ‘N- words in Paris’ on the BBC Live Lounge, and they didn’t expect that either, so, you know, I can ball so hard.” So, who’s the baddest of them all? One day, God-willing, there will be an amazing DVD consisting entirely of previews for Boa vs. Python , the almighty Sharktopus and every other Megalodon/Mega-Python/Gateroid direct to video creature feature of the last five years. Hopefully with commentaries. But for now, we’ll take these trailers one at a time and give thanks when a new one brightens an otherwise drab week. That brings me to Megashark vs. Crocosaurus which features the two title characters battling it out as well as a grown up Jaleel White (that is, Steve Urkel from Family Matters ) flexing some pretty hefty acting muscles.

Rodriguez/ WireImage She had two singles battling it out for the summer jam of 2010, tackled hosting duties for the Teen Choice Awards, is vying for two VMAs (her “California Gurls” is up for Best Female Video and Best Pop Video) and now America’s current pop sweetheart Katy Perry can add “SNL” performer to her ever-expanding resume. Perry’s more astute fans might have been able to guess the news before the singer made it official, given Perry’s somewhat cryptic Tweet directed at “SNL” alum and the 36th season premiere host, Amy Poehler: “Dear Amy Poehler can I please be your braced faced neighbor friend that hangs out with you & RICKKKKK!” We assume that comment is referring to Poehler’s “Kaitlin” character — the precocious, excitable and extremely loud 10-year-old who appeared in a series of sketches alongside “Rick!” (played by Horatio Sanz). Shortly thereafter, Perry followed her Poehler-themed Tweet with the official announcement: “OKAY! My BIG surprise is I’m opening the season of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE on Sept 25 W/SNL Alum Amy Poehler!!!” she wrote, followed by a link to her official website with the announcement. MTV News tracked down a representative from “SNL” to confirm Perry’s appearance, though whether the pop star will be included in any of the cast’s sketches remains to be seen. Given Perry’s plucky performance at the — during which she impersonated a series of stereotypical high school characters with her co-hosts (the guys from “Glee”) — she seems a shoe-in for inclusion in at least one of the show’s many vignettes.
