Jennifer Lopez Not Planning Steven Tyler Duet

‘American Idol’ judges aren’t looking to hop on the ‘Moves Like Jagger’ bandwagon with their own collabo, Lopez tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Jennifer Lopez Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images The usual rule in Hollywood is that if something works once, it’s probably worth doing it again, and again, and again, and then maybe once more just to make sure the concept hasn’t run out of legs. But even though “The Voice” mentors Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera smashed digital sales records with their collaboration “Moves Like Jagger,” don’t expect “American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez to follow in their fancy footsteps. “None of us are kind of followers in that way,” Lopez told MTV News when asked if she and Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler might consider putting their very different pipes together to see if they could capture their own lightning in a bottle. “We kind of do what feels right, and anybody that’s been in the business a long time knows that you don’t chase.” You could see why they might consider it, though. Since joining the revamped “Idol” panel last year, Lopez and Tyler have helped set a standard for how career artists can reboot their fortunes by making a move to prime time. Aerosmith’s back catalog sales blew up, while Lopez scored her biggest hit in years with the “Idol”-promoted single “On the Floor.” Despite that visibility, the singer said she’s not into leading from behind. “You set the trail. You go out front, and anything that we do is something that feels good to us,” she said, leaving the door open just a crack. “If that happened, it would happen. If a performance happened, it would happen. But it would have to feel real. … Last year, we talked about performing together on the show for the finale, and we just couldn’t agree on the same thing that felt good for all of us, so we just didn’t do it.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. ‘American Idol’ Ratings Down Again, But Show Still Tops The Night

Ratings down 12 percent from last year. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez on “American Idol” Photo: FOX There was a bit of good news/ bad news for “American Idol” on Friday morning (January 21). When the ratings came in for Thursday night’s second audition episode of season 10 , the numbers were once again down from last year, but on its new night, the show also notched the highest Thursday night ratings in more than 15 years for the Fox network. The Hollywood Reporter reported that the show averaged 22.9 million viewers and a 7.8 rating in the crucial 18-49 demographic, easily winning the night and more than doubling the numbers put up by the next-highest-rated show, NBC’s “The Office” (8.3 million viewers, 4.5 rating). The show was down 9 percent overall among total viewers and down 15 percent in the 18-49 demo compared to the first hour of Wednesday night’s season premiere . It also took a dive from last season’s second audition show, which rang up 26.4 million viewers and a 10 rating in the demo. The show moved back a night this year, switching from its Tuesday/Wednesday schedule, where it faced less competition, to Wednesday/Thursday this year. Overall, the first two shows are down 12 percent from last year’s opening episodes. Another good sign is that “Idol” beat CBS’ “Big Bang Theory,” one of the leading comedies on TV, which still put up strong numbers (13.6 million viewers/4.2 share). The other positive is that the move to Thursday gave Fox its highest-rated night of regular programming since 1995. While ratings have slid, so far audience and expert reaction to the new judging panel has been mostly positive and bodes well for greater tune-in once the show goes live in the first week of March. ‘American Idol’ Season 10 Premiere: Fans Sound Off!

Fans review new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson on the season premiere of “American Idol” Photo: FOX The morning after the debut episode of season 10 of “American Idol,” fans are saying the long-running reality singing program has regained some of its lost luster. Considering that the early audition rounds are usually filled with the most “entertaining” singers, a lot of that praise had to do with the bang-up job of new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez. MTV News’ comments sections and a special Twitter feed tied to our first-ever post-“Idol” were inundated with comments, rants and raves about Wednesday night’s show, some positive, some negative and a few just plain angry. “I thought Steven Tyler was hilarious,” Garrett wrote. “I personally loved him, and I can’t wait to see more.” Ted agreed, adding, “My expectations were low but I thought they did good. I will watch it again.” Plipton approached the show with caution, fearing it would not be as good without beloved iconic “mean judge” Simon Cowell. “But I truly enjoyed it,” Plipton said. “I thought Steven was hilarious and honest. I didn’t expect much from him or Jennifer and I thought they did a great job. I think this season is going to be great. I loved their rawness and honesty. More than anything, I enjoyed Steven. He is a funny guy.” Sarah, however, was not won over. She said she watched Wednesday night’s show, but would probably bail until the Hollywood rounds. “I used to enjoy the auditions, mainly for the bad ones,” she said, offering an early assessment of the audition rounds. “But this season has fallen flat. Sorry, the goofs are just more entertaining.” DPB thought the show was just boring and suggested that none of the judges “know what they were talking about or doing,” labeling Tyler’s comments “superficial” and “obvious.” Over on Twitter, we were swamped with comments at the #idolwithoutsimon hashtag we created for the live stream. Mrs_FiFi said, “Steven Tyler made me forget all about Simon last nite. Steven is fascinating, funny & he can SING.” ArchuletaGirl begged to differ, though, tweeting, “Idol just isn’t the same without Simon. These new judges keep getting suckered into putting bad people through.” Others dubbed Tyler “kinda pervy,” possibly for the legendary rock star’s long, lusty looks at some of the contestants and comments about their skirt lengths. Adam Mersel had props for Lopez, opining that “J.Lo is poppin’ on #A10. She knows what’s up. And Steven Tyler is officially creepy. Oh Idol how I missed you.” What did you think of the first night of “American Idol”? Sound off in the comments below! Steven Tyler’s Best ‘American Idol’ Quotes From New Orleans

‘From my melodic sensibility, it was really delicious,’ new judge tells one contestant. By Kara Warner Steven Tyler Photo: FOX Night number two of “American Idol” season 10 was shorter than the first, but just as sweet, particularly if you are a fan of new judge Steven Tyler . The unpredictability and wackiness of the Aerosmith frontman is quickly becoming one of the most entertaining aspects of the show. “Idol” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe recently told MTV News that Tyler will be on a tape delay when the show goes live, but even though he is already bleeped out accordingly during these first few weeks of audition rounds, his unique commentary and compliments deserve a recap of their own. So without further ado, here are Thursday night’s (January 20) top Tyler-isms:

‘American Idol’ Alum Allison Iraheta Weighs In On Revamped Show

‘Fifteen? That’s when everyone is figuring out who the hell they are,’ singer says about new minimum age limit. By Gil Kaufman Allison Iraheta via streaming video on Wednesday Photo: MTV News Allison Iraheta knows what it’s like to be the young kid on “American Idol.” She made it to the top four in season 8 when she was just 16, making her the youngest singer to ever advance that far on the show. But when the now-18-year-old music biz veteran dropped in to participate in MTV’s first-ever post-“American Idol” live stream on Wednesday night, even she was shocked at how young some of the contestants were on night one of season 10’s audition round. “Damn, that’s scary!” Iraheta said via Skype. “I was scared for my auditions. Fifteen? That’s when everyone is figuring out who the hell they are. I didn’t even know who the hell I was until a year ago.” With the age limit dropped to 15 this year, Iraheta said she hopes a young ‘un can win, but admitted that before she came out onstage when she was on the show, she would often totally freak out due to nerves. “Really, be you, be who you are, be true to yourself,” Iraheta advises contestants. The big question of the night, of course, was whether Iraheta missed departed judge Simon Cowell, who famously put her through the ringer a few times during her season. “It was different, right?” she said of the vibe with new superstar judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez . “I think change is good. We all miss him. It’s a little weird at first. I think it’s cool. It’s about time they did a little something different.” Iraheta is sporting new dark locks, which replace her signature flame-red hair. She said the radical change came about after she grew tired of seeing “16 chicks at the mall” with the same kind of red streaks in their hair. Though she couldn’t reveal much detail about her upcoming second album, Iraheta said it was going to be a “hell of a year,” promising some rocking new music. Unlike pal and season 8 “Idol” winner Kris Allen , Iraheta didn’t have specific comments on how Tyler and Lopez did, but she was happy to sing a bit of J Lo’s “Jenny From the Block” to spice up her appearance. ‘American Idol’ Alum Matt Giraud Thinks Steven Tyler Was ‘Really Funny’

‘To sit in front of an icon like that has got to be ridiculous,’ the season eight finalist says. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Matt Giraud via streaming video on Wednesday Photo: MTV News On Wednesday night, the new and revamped “American Idol” debuted. It was Simon Cowell-free and featured new judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler . So, what did season 8 contestant Matt Giraud think of the show without Cowell? “I did kind of miss him. I was kind of thinking, ‘Oh yeah, can’t wait to hear what Simon says … oh yeah, there’s no Simon.’ [But] I think they did pretty well,” he told MTV News on Wednesday night during “Judging the Judges.” “We missed him. He adds something for sure.” While he was mourning the loss of Cowell, as did fellow Season 8 contestant Allison Iraheta , Giraud did have an interesting analysis of one new judge’s style. “I know the producers are worried about Steven Tyler ‘s mouth,” he joked. “I thought he was really funny, how he was checking out all the contestants. Watch when they go live. He’s going to look like a puppy on a leash.” Regarding Tyler’s somewhat animated judging style, Giraud says that he may have scatted right back at him if given the chance. “I would do the same thing back! I would probably want to sing an Aerosmith song,” he laughed. “To sit in front of an icon like that has got to be ridiculous. I think the judges this year, it’s kind of cool to see actual entertainers who are still relevant.” With the judges’ table completely revamped save for “Idol” vet Randy Jackson, does it even matter who sits at the table in the long run? “They do give you advice. I think in the beginning rounds, every word they say is so important. It means a lot in the beginning,” he explained. “But I think as you go along and you know you have fans out there, they matter less and less.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. ‘American Idol’ Exec Says ‘Legend’ Steven Tyler Will Be Good TV

‘You never know what he’s going to say. That, as a TV producer, you’re interested in,’ Nigel Lythgoe tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Matt Elias Nigel Lythgoe Photo: MTV News One thing that fans of “American Idol” can count on each season is a level of unpredictability, particularly once the show narrows the contestants down to 20 and the performance rounds and weekly eliminations begin. This season has upped the unpredictability factor in the form of new and potentially wayward, wacky judge Steven Tyler. When MTV News caught up with the reality show’s returning executive producer Nigel Lythgoe , we asked if he was worried about having to censor the Aerosmith frontman. “Oh yes, [I have] every worry about that,” Lythgoe readily admitted about Tyler’s sometimes-potty mouth. “But we’re on a delay, and he’s already done it. And then he forgets that he’s not allowed to say it, so he’ll say, ‘F—! Did I say f—? Oh f—. Sorry mate.’ ” Lythgoe — who also appears as a judge on Fox’s other reality talent show, “So You Think You Can Dance”— has said that a large part of Tyler’s appeal is not being able to predict what he’ll say or do. “He has come through that whole rock and roll circus,” said Lythgoe of Tyler , whom he also hopes will perform on the show, along with judges Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson, at some point. “Why wouldn’t you want a legend there? You never know what he’s going to say. That, as a TV producer, you’re interested in.” As for 62-year-old rock icon Tyler , he seemed genuinely excited about the entire process but with one concern as the show prepares for its season 10 kickoff. “The part that’s a little difficult is judging young kids,” he said this week. “It took me a couple minutes to get into the role of that, but I’ve grown accustomed to it and it’s fun and I get to sit next to J.Lo and Randy taking [the] you-know-what out of everybody.” Don’t miss our “American Idol” live stream “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon,” featuring post-show analysis from Jim Cantiello and special guests, on MTV.com tonight at 10 p.m. ET. ‘American Idol’ Revamp Includes Axing Top 24, Adding Video Competition

Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe also says Randy Jackson is ‘pulling his weight’ for the upcoming season. By Gil Kaufman Nigel Lythgoe Photo: Mathew Imaging/ Wireimage Call it the 10-Year Itch. A decade into its run, “American Idol” is getting a face-lift courtesy of returning executive producer Nigel Lythgoe. When the 10th season kicks off on January 12, contestants will be faced with a series of new challenges that will make the reshuffling of the judging panel seem tame by comparison. According to an interview with TVGuide.com , Lythgoe has plans to streamline the show while giving contestants challenges that will potentially better prepare them for pop stardom. Among the fresh wrinkles being thrown at the aspiring singers are contests to make the best music videos and promote themselves and a chance to work with a band and dancers for an awards show-style performance. The biggest tweak, however, has to do with the mechanics of the show, namely the elimination of the round of 24 that shrinks the cast down to the final 12. “I didn’t think [the top 24] were very good, I was bored with them by the time they got there,” Lythgoe said. It was not specified, however, if the adjustment means that judges will pick the top 12 or what will replace the shows that formerly made up the early audience voting rounds. So far, Lythgoe said new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez are settling in to their gigs and taking the job very seriously. “They both listen intently and don’t make glib remarks,” he said. “They give honest critiques.” At the same time, he noted that sole remaining judge Randy Jackson, best known up until now for his mostly lightweight, catchphrase-heavy critiques, has upped his game. “Randy is pulling his weight,” Lythgoe said. “He really has stepped up. He’s essentially come out of himself. He’s enjoying being in that position.” Among the other new aspects contestants — who can now be as young as 15 — will face are theme weeks that will cover certain decades rather than the catalogs of popular artists and a new in-house mentor in the form of Interscope Geffen A&M Records chairman Jimmy Iovine. ‘American Idol’ Judges Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez Talk ‘Tough Love’

‘We’re sure going to send some people home with broken hearts,’ Aerosmith frontman insists. By Kara Warner Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images We have been following news on season 10 of “American Idol” before season nine even began. It all started back in January with the shock of Simon Cowell’s departure . Then Ellen DeGeneres was out ! Then Kara DioGuardi ! The rumored new judges piled on from there, with names like Jessica Simpson, Elton John and Justin Timberlake thrown up for consideration. Eventually, that field was narrowed to two: Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler , who were announced as official “Idol” judges during a Fox press conference Wednesday (September 22). One of the many questions asked of the new panelists during the big event was: Will they get in touch with their inner-Simon Cowell and be tough on the contestants? “How tough will I be? I believe in tough love,” Lopez said. “But I don’t think I will ever, as an artist myself, I could never be cruel to another artist,” she added. “I think there are definitely better ways to get your point across. I’ve mentored on the show before, so I think people have seen that and kinda can feel how I’ll be — or maybe they’ll be surprised.” Tyler said he, too, has no plans for outrageous tongue-lashings and will instead be trying to protect himself from getting too attached. “We’re sure going to send some people home with broken hearts,” Tyler admitted. “But with all that we’ve been through in our careers, living vicariously through the young talent out there, it’s going to be hard. But it’s also going to be fun, because they’re stepping up to the plate, and so are we.” Who will be tougher: Lopez or Tyler? Sound off in the comments!
