If you don’t know who Alizée Jacotey is, she had the bestselling French-speaking album in the last 20 years in 2001, and is the most iconic French recording artist of the 21st Century, according to Wikipedia. And according to my more reliable sources, every single teenage French-speaking guy used to beat it to her. You can probably see why after looking at these new promo pics for her latest album. Which means now might be a good time to invest in Kleenex in France, because sales are about to go through the roof. » view all 15 photos
Joan Rivers made headlines this week when she handcuffed herself to a cart at Costco in protest of that chain refusing to sell copies of her memoir, shouting to customers that the store is akin to ” Nazi Germany .” In response, the Anti-Defamation League issued a statement that called out the comedian for these remarks, saying: “Such comparisons only serve to trivialize the Holocaust and are deeply offensive to Jews and other survivors.”
David Rakoff, an award-winning author best known for his dark humor and cynical outlook on life, passed away today after a long battle with cancer. He was 47. Rakoff wrote for The New York Times and Newsweek , among other publications, and his essay collection “Half Empty” won the Thurber Prize for American Humor. He also penned the bestselling books “Don’t Get Too Comfortable” and “Fraud.” Rakoff’s death was confirmed by Doubleday and Anchor Books. “The world is a little less kind and a little less beautiful today,” his longtime editor, Bill Thomas, said in a statement, adding: “There were hundreds of reasons to love David. He was of course incredibly charming, witty and learned, a brilliant raconteur with the quickest mind imaginable, but most of all he was a generous soul. Though his life was cut infuriatingly short, it was rich beyond measure.” Doubleday will publish Rakoff’s final piece in 2013, a work titled “Love, Dishonor, Marry, Die; Cherish, Perish.”

Adele’s vocal cords are in bad shape. After a year plagued with canceled tour dates and serious bouts of laryngitis, the British singer is on the shelf for the remainder of 2011 after throat surgery. Her record company announced the news with “deep regret,” confirming that all Adele’s concert dates and promotional appearances are cancelled until 2012. Adele’s label said in a statement : “She is to undergo surgery to alleviate the current issues with her throat and a full recovery is expected. As a result, doctors have ordered her to rest her voice and completely recuperate before looking to schedule any work commitments.” It’s unclear when the 23-year-old – whose 21 is currently the bestselling album of the year – is expected to return, but the surgery will not impact her voice. No 2012 appearances have yet been set, but the Grammys are set for February 12. That would seem like an appropriate time and place for a comeback. Unlike the reaction of most Red Sox fans when they heard John Lackey will miss all of 2012 with Tommy John Surgery, here’s hoping Adele returns ASAP!
Kendra Wilkinson failed to impress again on Dancing With the Stars, finishing tied for last Monday (albeit with two other couples, and a decent score). Decked out like a figure on a Fourth of July cake, the E! star looked less than inspired and more like she was simply trying to get through the foxtrot. She’s an amateur, of course, so no one expects her to be perfect. But you wonder if she’s still hurting from last week, after which she said she felt belittled and embarrassed by Carrie Ann Inaba. Watch and see: Kendra Wilkinson and Louis Van Amstel – DWTS Week 5 Will Kendra go home, or will fans come out in force to save the Playboy model out of sympathy and support? We’ll find out by the end of the evening. Who do you think will WIN Dancing With the Stars?
Elizabeth Banks has been rumored for the part of Effie Trinket in the upcoming film adaptation of The Hunger Games, according to new reports. A buzzed-about cast already features Jennifer Lawrence as lead character Katniss Everdeen, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta and Liam Hemsworth as Gale. The rumor of Banks as Effie , a flaky bureaucrat who escorts her district’s young death-match contestants to their fate, was first reported by Variety. Lionsgate would not confirm whether Banks will be joining the film, based on the bestselling young-adult novel (the first in a hit trilogy) by Suzanne Collins. The Hunger Games takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, one boy and one girl from each district are chosen to fight to the death in a televised event. Banks has already taken on one huge new role this year: Mom. She and hubby Max Handelman welcomed a son, Felix, by gestational carrier in March. [Photo: PacificCoastNewsOnline.com]
