A n entrepreneur is aiming to create a hub for Black literature in Orlando, Florida. Trenessa L. Williams has plans on expanding her online bookstore Kizzy’s Books & More into a brick-and-mortar store which would make it the only Black-owned bookstore in Orlando, Black News reported. Entrepreneur Trenessa Williams currently sells African American books online… But once she launches her brick and mortar storefront, it will be the only Black-owned book store in Orlando, Florida! #blackpreneur #blackgirlsrock #blackgirlmagic https://t.co/qYEjAG7ciE — Black News (@BlackNews) January 4, 2019 Williams initially started the online store as an avenue to promote literacy in the Black community, the news outlet writes. She wanted to create a space that sold literature where African Americans could see themselves reflected in the material that they read. Kizzy’s Books & More also sells different products that capture the essence of Black culture. The store’s moniker was inspired by the character Kizzy from Alex Haley’s Roots . Williams wants the brick-and-mortar store to be built in the historically Black neighborhood of Parramore. The neighborhood—which was hugely impacted by racism that stemmed from the Jim Crow era—is currently being revitalized. Williams believes that it’s essential to have a store like Kizzy’s Books & More in the neighborhood because there is a lack of accessibility to Black literature. She has launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds to bring her vision to fruition. Throughout the country, there has been an effort to create bookstores centered on Black literature and save ones that have been staples in African American communities for decades. In 2017, a Black couple opened MahoganyBooks in Anacostia. It was the first bookstore to open in 20 years in the Black Southeast Washington, D.C. neighborhood. During the same year, there was a major push to save Hakim’s Bookstore in Philadelphia. The store is the oldest Black-owned bookstore in America. According to Black Enterprise , the show has teamed up with the app Scholly to help students pay off their student loans. @FreeformTV ’s @grownish and scholarship app @MyScholly have partnered up on a program that will pay off up to $125,000 in student loan debt. https://t.co/iZnX9j24kM — Black Enterprise (@blackenterprise) January 3, 2019 The app—which was launched in 2013—was designed to help students find scholarships, the news outlet writes. It was featured on Shark Tank and backed by investors Daymond John and Lori Greiner and subsequently garnered national attention. Cognizant of the burden that student loan debt can have on students, the company has decided to join forces with grown-ish and pay off $125,000 in student loan debt. “Scholly, up until now has focused on helping students avoid student loan debt but, we want to help those who have already amassed a certain amount of student loan debt break free of it,” Scholly founder Chris Gray said in a statement, according to Black Enterprise. “This is just the beginning. Our plan is to do a lot more of these sorts of grants in the near future.” Since its inception, Scholly has helped students across the nation secure $100 million in scholarship money. The winners of the student loan contest will be revealed at the 2019 Freeform Summit. Many companies and institutions have been stepping up to help individuals pay off their student loan debt. Last month Jasmin Ford —a single Black mother from Chicago—had $150,000 of her student loan debt paid off by Fifth Third Bank. After witnessing the impact that the generous act had on Ford, the bank decided to launch a contest similar to grown-ish and Scholly’s. 5 American (Or Canadian) Pop Stars Who Have Showed Off Their Spanish Chops With Latin Collaborations

Go here to see the original:

Source: George Pimentel / Getty Drake has been the talk of the town all day since releasing a brand new track titled “Mia” with Bad Bunny . The up-tempo record features Aubrey singing in Spanish, as Bunny follows up with a long verse of his own. The visual, released simultaneously, sees both stars enjoying an evening block party, equipped with dancing, hookahs, and a game of dominoes. Bad Bunny feat Drake – “Mia” But 2018 is far from Drake’s first time teaming up with a Latin-American superstar. Back in 2013, Drizzy teamed up with former Aventura lead singer  Romeo Santos for “Odio,” in which the Canadian also showcased his Spanish singing skills. This initial collaboration was especially fitting following the lyrics from Drake’s 2011 smash hit “The Motto,” where he rapped, “Spanish girls love me like I’m Aventura.” What foreshadowing. Romeo Santos feat Drake – “Odio” Though Drake is known for his ability to “adapt” into other cultures like they’re his own, he’s not the first–and won’t be the last–to experiment with some bi-lingual singing skills. Let’s take a look at other huge stars who have crossed over into collaborations with Latin sensations. Before Romeo and Drake came Romeo and Usher .  Mr. Raymond doesn’t actually show off any bi-lingual chops on his track “Promise” from Romeo Santos’ 2011 album  Fórmula, Vol. 1 , but the collaboration was a big deal for both artists, nonetheless. Romeo Santos feat Usher – “Promise” We can’t talk about North American pop-stars crossing over without talking about Justin Bieber . The Canadian heartthrob hopping on the remix to Daddy Yankee  &  Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito” is probably the most successful Spanish crossover of all-time–and with the original video boasting 5.5 billion views on Youtube, it’s one of the most successful singles ever, in general. Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee feat Justin Bieber – “Despacito (Remix)” Keeping it in the family, Luis Fonsi’s brother  Jean Rodriguez is actually the one who coached Beyoncé  on her Spanish chops before she hopped on J Balvin’s “Mi Gente.” Though the release of this song (and Bey’s involvement in it) had everybody freaking out, this wasn’t Mrs. Carter’s first time around the block. The superstar has made her fair share of Spanish remixes to her very own songs including “Si Yo Fuera Un Chico (If I Were a Boy),” “Oye (Listen),” and “Irreemplazable (Irreplaceable).” J Balvin & Willy William feat Beyoncé- “Mi Gente” Though it wasn’t a collaboration with a Latin musician, Kendrick Lamar paid tribute to his Los Angeles roots by rapping his a$$ off en Español for his feature on labelmate Schoolboy Q ‘s track “Collard Greens.” Schoolboy Q feat Kendrick Lamar – “Collard Greens” Those five aren’t the only North American artists to dabble in some Spanish, check out these honorable mentions to get well-versed in the bi-lingual world of American music. DJ Snake feat Selena Gomez, Ozuna, Cardi B – “Taki Taki”

Source: Ron Tom/ABC / Getty College…the best days of our lives. Whether you’re reading this from your dorm room or you’re well into your career thinking back on the old days , you know higher learning institutions provide a different kind of fun, freedom, and sense of camaraderie you can’t find anywhere else. And if you made the extraordinary decision to attend an HBCU, that feeling is twice as intense. Historically Black College and Universities give non-wypipo a home away from home, where we can learn about our history, make like-minded friends, have fun, and learn to love ourselves for who we are. For many of us, it’s the first time we see other Black people in positions of power, influence, and esteem. It’s a gold mine for Black excellence, enlightenment, and scholarship. It’s oh so necessary. Depending on our personalities and overall life goals, we all end up playing a different part at our respective HBCUs. There are the geeks, who are all about getting higher grades than every other living being—because, what’s life if you don’t make valedictorian at the end of such an expensive education? There are the athletes, who are dedicated to looking good and feeling great. Going pro is a dream come true for many of these types, but for those with less ambitious goals, it’s all about the sweat and competition. Don’t forget the kid who lives life as a voice for the Black community. This student is most likely to become the president of the Black Student Union.(S)he is all about uplifting Black people, building Black influence and they’ll probably go on to fight for Black rights all over the nation. And it wouldn’t be a historically black college or university if we didn’t talk about Greek life. You know who they are, you know what they’re about, and you know it’s LIT lit when they come through. No matter who you are/were on campus, it’s time to turn up. Homecoming season is upon us and HBCU students and alumni everywhere are about to celebrate like only we can. Race Matters: Asian Fraternity Member Makes Video In Blackface Trying To Be Jay-Z, University Calls Video A “Teaching Moment”

Really? In 2013 people still do blackface ? Asian Fraternity Makes Video In Blackface According to News One You’d think that folks would know by now that donning Blackface in YouTube videos will not go down well, but one fraternity in California clearly didn’t get the memo. NBC 4 Los Angeles reports that several members from Lambda Theta Delta, an Asian-American fraternity at University of California, Irvine, made a video in which they danced and lip sync to Justin Timberlake’s “Suit and Tie.” Fifty-five seconds into the two-minute video, a man donning Blackface appeared, supposedly portraying hip hop star Jay-Z. The fraternity’s president, Darius Obana, says that his chapter has been accused of racism. An accusation he firmly denies. He says the person wearing Blackface in the video is a UC Irvine junior who was “just trying to be Jay-Z.” Students interviewed over the incident did not agree. The university’s vice chancellor told NBC 4 that his office has fielded complaints from the Black Student Union and has launched an investigation into the incident. Though the office is treating it as a “teaching moment.” Obana said the fraternity apologized for the video on its website and has reached out to the Black Student Union. One of the latest incidents of someone wearing Blackface came out of New York City, when state Assemblyman Dov Hikind donned it during a Jewish celebration at his home in February. After a few days of denying he had done anything wrong, Hikind was forced to apologize So this is a “teaching moment” for the Asian fraternity. We wonder if this had been a black fraternity doing something equally racist, would they still call it that? Youtube
