Social media has led to a social gaffe for Steve Martin, but he’s taking full responsibility for his racist tweet and explaining in detail how it came about. The actor, writer and former Oscar host, 68, was quipping with fans on Twitter when he apparently went too far when the topic turned to grammar. Asked by a fan, “Is this how you spell lasonia?” Martin said: “It depends. Are you in an African-American neighborhood or at an Italian restaurant?” Quickly realizing the line might offend, Martin deleted the tweet and apologized . In the face of criticism that ensued, he offered a longer explanation. “I was riffing on Twitter, inviting people to ask me grammar questions,” the funnyman wrote. “I replied with what I hoped were funny answers.” “For example, a person might write ‘What’s the difference between then and than?’ I would say, ‘then is a conjunctive preposition, and than is a misspelling of thank’.” “I have done similar things to this on other occasions, and there is a great spirit of fun between me and the Twitter followers.” “I was going along fine when someone wrote, ‘How do you spell lasonia?’ I wrote: ‘It depends if you are in an African American neighborhood or an Italian restaurant.'” “I knew of the name Lasonia. I did not make it up, nor do I find it funny.” “So to me the answer was either Lasonia (with a capital), or Lasagna, depending on what you meant. That they sounded alike in this rare and particular context struck me as funny.” “That was the joke. When the tweet went out, I saw some negative comments and immediately deleted the tweet and apologized.” “I gathered the perception was that I was making fun of African American names. Later, thinking it over, I realized the tweet was irresponsible, and made a fuller apology on Twitter.” “Comedy is treacherous. I used to try out jokes in clubs and the audience’s feedback would tell me when I had crossed a line, or how to shape a joke so it is clear.” “Today, the process is faster. It’s your brain, a button, then millions of reactions. But it’s my job to know.” Apology accepted?
A party at Justin Bieber’s house a couple weeks ago nearly ended in tragedy, as a guest fell unconscious and a friend of the singer’s phoned the authorities. An ambulance was dispatched to the scene but later recalled when the victim stumbled to her feet and was taken home. Now, though, the 911 call made by Bieber’s unnamed pal has surfaced… and it’s raised a few questions concerning what the heck went down on the night of December 13. At first, the security team member tells an operator that someone is “hyperventilating.” Then, he says the person is having a seizure. Then, he changes his story again and say she simply passed out. We may never know what actually happened, but listen in now and try to discern for yourself: Justin Bieber 911 Call: WTF? Of course, Bieber fans have something else to focus on and worry about these days: Did Justin really retire on Christmas Eve ?!?!?!?!?
Really? In 2013 people still do blackface ? Asian Fraternity Makes Video In Blackface According to News One You’d think that folks would know by now that donning Blackface in YouTube videos will not go down well, but one fraternity in California clearly didn’t get the memo. NBC 4 Los Angeles reports that several members from Lambda Theta Delta, an Asian-American fraternity at University of California, Irvine, made a video in which they danced and lip sync to Justin Timberlake’s “Suit and Tie.” Fifty-five seconds into the two-minute video, a man donning Blackface appeared, supposedly portraying hip hop star Jay-Z. The fraternity’s president, Darius Obana, says that his chapter has been accused of racism. An accusation he firmly denies. He says the person wearing Blackface in the video is a UC Irvine junior who was “just trying to be Jay-Z.” Students interviewed over the incident did not agree. The university’s vice chancellor told NBC 4 that his office has fielded complaints from the Black Student Union and has launched an investigation into the incident. Though the office is treating it as a “teaching moment.” Obana said the fraternity apologized for the video on its website and has reached out to the Black Student Union. One of the latest incidents of someone wearing Blackface came out of New York City, when state Assemblyman Dov Hikind donned it during a Jewish celebration at his home in February. After a few days of denying he had done anything wrong, Hikind was forced to apologize So this is a “teaching moment” for the Asian fraternity. We wonder if this had been a black fraternity doing something equally racist, would they still call it that? Youtube
Another day, another school shooting. Grady High School Student Shoots Self In Leg Via MyFoxAtlanta Atlanta police tell FOX 5 a 17-year-old person shot herself outside of Grady High School on Wednesday morning, causing the school to go on lockdown for over two hours. Atlanta Public Schools says the person is a student, and they don’t know if the shooting was accidental or intentional. Police say the shooting occurred at around 9:40 a.m. They say the student was between buildings of the campus, and not inside, when the shooting happened. They say they do not know why the student was on the campus with the gun. Police reiterated there is not a gunman loose on campus. Atlanta Public Schools tweeted that there are no reports of any suspects on campus, and that the gun has been confiscated. Police say the 17-year-old student suffered a wound to her upper leg, and was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition. A student tells FOX 5 the gun may have been in her pocket when it went off. Another student says he heard a “pop,” but didn’t think anything of it at the time. That’s exactly what her dumb a$$ gets for bringing a gun to school. Image via Doug Evans/FOX 5
Is Chris Brown the man gettin’ down and freaky with Draya Michele in a new sex tape that’s making the Internet rounds? Or is it some Breezy impostor? Brown’s rep says the person who stars in a new XXX video being shopped around L.A. is definitely not Chris, despite salacious reports to the contrary. According to MediaTakeOut, the mystery seller wants $50,000 in exchange for footage which allegedly features Brown and the Basketball Wives star. Draya Michele, as you can see, is not shy. But did she freak with Breezy? MediaTakeOut claims they have seen the alleged Chris Brown sex tape, but sadly, were forced to pass on the thing because it was out of their price range. Nevertheless, the singer’s rep says “The report is absolutely not true.” A second source in Brown’s camp smells a conspiracy, in fact. “Doesn’t it seem like a coincidence that every time Chris has a major performance or event on the horizon, some fake story like this breaks?” he asked . It’s true. These stories do seem to follow Chris Brown wherever he goes … though he can take responsibility for some of that with his well-documented actions.
