Black Love Matters: Over A Century Old Restored Silent Film Is A Beautiful Portrait Of African American Affection

Source: JGI/Jamie Grill / Getty ‘Something Good – Negro Kiss’ Silent Film Goes Viral After Restoration This week actresses Tracee Ellis Ross and Viola Davis both reposted a beautiful piece of history — the 1898 silent film ‘Something Good – Negro Kiss,’ which was recently restored and was announced on the list of the Library of Congress’ 25 films added to the National Film Registry. We felt the love depicted in this clip is so beautiful and groundbreaking and stands at such a contrast to the many negative stereotypes carried out about our race that we wanted to share with you as part of our political content for the day. Watch below as Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden announces the selection of 25 of America’s most influential motion pictures to be inducted into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress because of their cultural, historic and aesthetic importance to the nation’s film heritage. Selection to the registry will help ensure that these films will be preserved for all time. Here is the list of 25 films added to the 2018 National Film Registry. 1. Bad Day at Black Rock (1955) 2. Producer and Oscar-Nominated Production Designer Polly Platt Dies at 72

You might not know the name Polly Platt on first glance, but you know the movies she was involved with both as a production designer ( The Last Picture Show , A Star is Born ) and producer ( Broadcast News , Say Anything , Bottle Rocket ). Platt passed away on Wednesday morning from complications due to ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). The former wife of director Peter Bogdanovich, she was Oscar nominated for her production design on Terms of Endearment . Let’s remember Platt with a clip from that James L. Brooks film ahead.

DVD: Are We Allowed to Call Broadcast News a Classic Yet?

While Network is the movie that prophesied the future of corporate-controlled TV news, James L. Brooks’ 1987 Broadcast News was more zeitgeist-y. The shift toward happy-talk infotainment had been going on long enough that Brooks had satirized it in the 1970s on The Mary Tyler Moore Show , but the battle against what Holly Hunter’s character calls “the historic influence of Entertainment Tonight ” had not been so roundly lost as it is now.
