‘Big’s charisma, his sense of humor is what used to catch me,’ Lil’ Cease tells MTV News of late rapper’s prowess on the mic. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Notorious B.I.G. Photo: MTV News The ability to tell a story is one of the most revered skills a rapper can possess. Slick Rick, Ice Cube, Nas and Ghostface are all heralded as master storytellers. The Notorious B.I.G. is also considered among rap’s greats, thanks to his vivid collection of story raps like “Warning,” “Somebody’s Gotta Die” and Lil’ Cease’s favorite, “I Got a Story to Tell.” “My favorite record — and I still think I get the same feeling today as when he recorded it — is ‘I Got a Story to Tell,’ ” Cease told MTV News’ Sway Calloway. The Buckwild-produced “I Got a Story to Tell” is bare-bones as far as rap tracks go. With its drum track reminiscent of MC Lyte’s “Paper Thin” and its sparse acoustic guitar strokes, the song’s beat is the perfect background for Big to weave his complex robbery tale. In addition to its detailed imagery, the late rapper injected a healthy dose of humor into the track; that, for Cease, is the song’s greatest quality. “Me and Big used to listen to records all the time, and when I heard ‘Story to Tell,’ just the story line … Big’s charisma, his sense of humor is what used to catch me about him,” he said. “He could take you off and on, light switch. It could be so hard and in a minute you’ll be crying, laughing in tears, like, hold up, you gotta rewind that back.” On the song, Big warns against having one-night stands with women who may be married or have boyfriends. He opens by painting a club scene. When the party is over, Biggie ends up riding home with a woman he’s just met. It turns out, however, that the temptress lives with her man, an unnamed NBA basketball player. When the two are in the throes of passion, her 6’5″ boyfriend comes home early, and B.I.G. is forced to tie the woman up and fake a robbery. At the end of the almost five-minute-long record, Biggie retells the story in prose. “He didn’t want anybody in that room to be confused with what he was saying, so he would explain to the room,” DJ Clark Kent said of Biggie’s in-studio routine. “To be great, you have to be able to do it all, and he was just sitting there laying down the format to let you know, ‘I can do it all. I can rhyme, I can do the metaphors, I can do the punch lines, I can do the stories, I can make you think, I can make you dance, I can make you chant,’ ” Cease said. “He made sure he balanced himself and made himself that well-rounded rapper, and ‘Story to Tell’ just [has] one of those feelings of being great.” Join MTV News as we celebrate the Notorious B.I.G.’s life on the 15th anniversary of his death. ‘I’m sure she’s got some things from Kim, but Nicki’s setting her own lane,’ Cease says of the female MCs’ rivalry. By Shaheem Reid Lil’ Cease, Lil’ Kim pose with Jay-Z Photo: MTV News Lil’ Cease thinks nothing’s wrong with one MC paying homage to another MC. “All of us had an influence in the game,” Cease said when he visited MTV News earlier this week. “We all came up listening to somebody, so it’s not bad to say it.” And Cease is like most hip-hop fans: He’s been keeping an eye on the unfolding Lil’ Kim/ Nicki Minaj controversy . The Queen Bee has come out swinging, claiming the voluptuous Young Money Barbie bit her fashion style without paying homage. Kim also accused Minaj of sneak-dissing on songs like the Diddy-Dirty Money “Hello, Good Morning” remix , taking exception to the line “Did I kill the Queen?” “When I heard about that, I didn’t have no real reaction to it,” Cease said of the flap. “At the end of the day, it’s a real competitive sport in hip-hop. Kim is one of them people. No matter how you look at her, as an icon or whatever, she’s definitely [an icon]. But she’s also an MC. She feels like she still maintains that [top] spot. She still feels like she holds that spot. You can’t knock her for that. But the paying homage thing, when I seen Nicki Minaj with the green hair, when I seen her do similar pictures that Kim has done — I look at that as paying homage. I saw other things where Nicki did pay homage; she said some [complimentary] things about Lil’ Kim. “But we don’t know what’s going on,” Cease added. “We don’t read between the lines like MCs do. Kim probably sees or hears things none of us probably sees or hears. She’s just making her judgment from what she’s seeing. We can’t knock her for that. At the end of the day, Nicki is Nicki. She’s building her own lane. She’s doing what she’s gotta do. She’s hot, she’s sexy. I’m sure she’s got some things from Kim, but [Nicki’s] setting her own lane … But Kim’s got a right to her opinion, she’s got a right to say how she feel. I’m used to Kim being that way. She’s very aggressive. If she feels like she ain’t getting the proper respect, she’s gonna speak her mind.” In the past few weeks, Kim has spoken out often about Minaj, while Nicki has remained silent. But Diddy , a host of female MCs and Drake have weighed in on the feud. On Tuesday morning, Drake told Houston radio station 97.9 the Box that he had nothing to say in response to Lil’ Kim calling him a “punk” in an interview with Thisis50.com. The Brooklyn MC was irate after Drake spoke out, during a concert, against her jabs at Nicki. “Nicki’s got records climbing the charts,” Drake said Tuesday, as he celebrated his debut album’s official release. “Today, Thank Me Later is out. It’s just about relevant people today.” Do you agree with Cease? Has Nicki Minaj paid homage to Kim by sampling some of her looks? Tell us what you think in the comments! ‘I know Big would want us all eating together in one room,’ Cease tells MTV News. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes and Sway Calloway Junior M.A.F.I.A. Photo: VH-1 One of music’s all-time great lyrical masters, Christopher “The Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace would have been 38 years old on Friday (May 21) had he lived. Biggie has been gone 13 years , but everyone who loved him still celebrates his memory. Junior M.A.F.I.A. member Lil’ Cease told MTV News that he wants to make Biggie look down smiling by setting up a major reconciliation. “If I could give Big a gift for his 38th birthday, it would be to bring the family together,” Cease said. “Just to see all the people he had around him in one room together: Me, Kim, D-Roc, Gutter, the whole M.A.F.I.A. Those people, it wasn’t business with us — it was friends. I didn’t write rhymes. I’m sure [Biggie] didn’t put me in the group because I had talent. He said, ‘I wanna make sure you good for the rest of your life. I’mma build you your own lane. You take it from there.’ He did that for me and nine other people in the group. “He also did that for the people that surrounded us, the friends like [Lance] ‘Un’ Rivera. A lot of us are here because of what Biggie built. At the end of the day, no matter what [gripes M.A.F.I.A. members may have], if everybody say they love Big like they say they would love him, I know [a reunion] is something he would want. I know something that’s [probably] bothering him is that everybody is separated.” The Junior M.A.F.I.A. imploded a little more than five years ago, when Lil’ Cease and M.A.F.I.A. member Banger were forced to testify in Lil’ Kim’s infamous perjury case . In the aftermath, Kim publicly disassociated herself from her onetime close friends. There have been dis records, lawsuits and obviously the Queen Bee’s nearly 10-month incarceration . Still, Cease says he wants to continue to try and come back together. “We’re working on it,” the Brooklyn-born Cease continued. “That’s something I would definitely want to do. I tried it for a year. Especially for Kim — I reached out for years. Everybody else is kinda in sync: I speak to Roc, Nino, D, [Money] L, everybody else is still kinda connected. The only one I wasn’t connected [with] was Kim. “I been swallowed my pride. Because as a family, when you know somebody for so long, you go through things. I didn’t think our situation would go this long and this far. As you get older, you start to appreciate that family value. It’s hard to try and do that in this day and age, when you this age. It takes a lot to build that kind of loyalty and trust. As days went by, I thought, ‘This is something Big would want.’ I hear it every day. I’m in the neighborhood and I’m outside. When they see Kim, they think of Big. When they see me, they think of Big. When they see D-Roc, they think of Big, and we’re all separated. I know Big would want us all eating together in one room. I’mma do my best to make that happen.” Cease-A-Leo insisted that despite his long estrangement from Kim, he still has love for her and is optimistic that they can at least talk to start the healing process. “We’re still talking to the same people,” he explained. “I guess people are starting to come around now and they are trying to make it happen. I speak to some of her close friends that I’m still close friends with and we working on it. It’s about that time,” he added about mending the divide between him and Kim. “It’s something that needs to happen. I don’t want no drama, especially with somebody I came up with. These are the things I think about.” Do you think it’s about time Junior M.A.F.I.A. reunited? Share your thoughts in the comments! Related Videos Happy Birthday Notorious B.I.G. ‘It’s like a real underground album,’ the MC tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Lil Cease and Notorious B.I.G. Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Happy birthday to the one and only Notorious B.I.G. — the hip-hop legend would have been 38 years old on Friday (May 21). And, just like they did on the 13th anniversary of his death on March 9 , his fans, friends and family will be celebrating his legacy all day. One of Biggie’s closest confidants, Lil’ Cease, is not just going to play the tunes of his best friend — he’s putting out music that he feels the Notorious One would have been proud of. ” Everything Is Hardbody, the first mixtape dropping May 21 [on] B.I.’s b-day,” Cease explained. “I think that’s the day for it. It was just the timing around when I finished it — I was like, ‘This is a good day to drop it on. It’s the time when people are thinking about a Lil’ Cease or B.I. or Junior M.A.F.I.A. They’re thinking about us on March 9th or May 21.’ I was like, ‘Let’s go for that date. It will be something monumental, something special.’ When people think of B.I. Day, I’m sure I come to their minds. I’ll give them a whole 12-, 13-joint mixtape with some nice exclusive music from me. “I stepped my game up as far as the lyrics, concepts. It’s gonna show my maturity,” Cease continued about the upcoming mixtape. “I took time off from the music just to learn it. The music is different from when we was up and moving with it. You gotta be persistent with it, make authentic music. I took it back to that ’94, ’95 era. Thanks to people like Raekwon, who kinda made the music authentic again. You ain’t gotta do the dance music. I kept it basic. That real M.A.F.I.A. sound. It came out dope. I did all new music. It’s more like a free album. I wanted to do something different with the mixtape.” Busta Rhymes, Cardan and Fabolous appear on the tape as well as some new talent. “I got one I just dropped called ‘Just Here to Hustle’ with my boy Apollo Creed — he’s from L.A.,” Cease said. “We just dropped the video online — every site been showing love. I got this one called ‘Yessir’ — we about to shoot the video with my artist Cancun … it’s dope. It’s like a real underground album. If you liked the first Wu-Tang album, this is in that mode. Real gutter, grimy beats.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .
