Jeff Conaway to Be Taken Off Life Support

Grease star Jeff Conaway’s family members haave decided to turn off the actor’s life support system, marking a sad end to his battle with substance abuse. The family, who has kept a vigil at the L.A. hospital where Conaway is in a coma after being found unconscious at home, say his fight will end. “Doctors advised the family that Jeff has had no brain function since he was brought into the hospital,” a source close to the situation said. It looks unlikely that Jeff Conaway will emerge from his coma . “The feeding tube has already been removed. The ventilator which is breathing for Jeff, will be removed sometime this afternoon.” “Jeff is in no pain whatsoever.” It’s unknown how Conaway will cope when the machine is switched off, but there will be no further attempts to resuscitate the actor. “No measures will be made to try and revive him once the breathing tube is removed,” the source said. “Jeff has remained unconscious.” The former Taxi star, now 60 years old, was hospitalized back on May 11 for what was though to be a prescription drug overdose. Dr. Drew Pinsky, who treated Conaway on Celebrity Rehab, said the star was suffering from pneumonia and sepsis, a severe blood illness. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. The NFL Lockout Has Officially Begun And It May Be A Long Time Before It’s Over

We all hoped that it would never come to this but unfortunately there will be a work stoppage this NFL season because the millionaires and the billionaires can’t get along. Now that the NFL Players Association has decided to decertify, here’s a road map of what might happen next. 1. The NFL will immediately file a grievance with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in an attempt to block the decertification. The NFL will argue that the NFLPA is acting in bad faith and that the NFLPA’s true goal is to get the NFL exposed to antitrust litigation as a way of grabbing owners’ money. 2. The NLRB takes no immediate action on the NFL’s grievance over the weekend as its offices will be closed. The NFLPA proceeds as if it has decertified. Monday comes along and the NLRB schedules a hearing, possibly for later in the week, to review the NFLPA’s decertification. 3. In addition to the NFL’s NLRB grievance, the NFLPA will file a request for a temporary restraining order with U.S. District Judge David Doty in an attempt to block the NFL from executing a lockout. The NFLPA, with Tom Brady and Peyton Manning as named plaintiffs, will argue that the lockout would violate players’ employment contracts with NFL teams and would constitute a group boycott under federal antitrust law, which it can now turn to since the NFLPA has decertified. Federal antitrust law is very threatening, as damages in a successful antitrust lawsuit are automatically multiplied by three. We have to side with players on this one. You can’t ask for a billion dollars and then not be willing to show a reason why you need it. Sh*t if you ask us for $50 we’re gonna wanna know why… Who’s side are you on, the players, the owners, or do you not give a damn and just want them to play?? Source

Damn bruh, you STILL need rehab??? Thought you woulda BEEN got sober… The phone rang early yesterday morning. On the other end was Dwight Gooden. Roommate of Mike Starr Details Rocker’s Final Hours, Drug Use

The day after former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr was found dead in his home, we may have a better idea of what led to this tragedy. While autopsy results have not been revealed, Starr’s roommate tells TMZ his friend was “mixing” methadone and anxiety medication hours before he died. He had reportedly been using the former in an effort to get sober, while downing the latter to deal stress from his arrest last month. Says the roommate: “Mike was a beautiful person who was fighting to stay sober… I am going to miss him greatly.”

Mike Starr’s Death Should Be A Warning, Addiction Specialist Says

‘As tragic as that is to watch, almost 20 million people are living in recovery,’ Robert J. Lindsey says of ex-Alice in Chains bassist’s death. By Ryan J. Downey Mike Starr in 1990 Photo: Marty Temme / Getty Images The death of ex-Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr raised a number of questions for his fans , as the loss of anyone who publicly struggled with drugs or alcohol often does. Why wasn’t his treatment, documented on VH1’s “Celebrity Rehab” and “Sober House,” a success? Why can’t someone like Starr just stop using drugs? “[The addiction] literally hijacks the person’s brain and takes over,” Robert J. Lindsey, president and CEO of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, told MTV News on Wednesday (March 9). “For somebody who has become physically and emotionally addicted, stopping and staying stopped is the hardest thing in the world to do. “The first thing to understand about alcoholism and addiction is that it’s similar to other chronic illnesses, like heart disease or diabetes. It’s chronic, it’s progressive and it’s fatal if it’s untreated,” he added. “Some people, despite the best efforts on their part and others, will die from their addiction. It’s our hope that Mike’s death will serve for many as the opportunity for them to either seek help for themselves, a friend or family member.” The NCADD estimates that there are more than 23 million people in the United States who are addicted to alcohol and other drugs. “That’s almost 10 percent of the population,” Lindsey pointed out. And while Starr’s death made headlines, as the seemingly endless relapses of other celebrities do as well, he’s quick to illustrate the growing picture of treatment. “It’s equally important to highlight the fact that we estimate that maybe 20 million individuals and family members are living lives in recovery today.” The history of Alice in Chains is unfortunately tied to drugs, specifically heroin, in many ways. The group wrote several songs about it and regularly disappeared from the limelight while singer Layne Staley battled his demons . He eventually died of an overdose of heroin and cocaine in 2002 while living as a virtual recluse. Starr had been gone from the group for nearly two decades already, reportedly fired for his inability to manage his own drug habits. In more recent years, he seemed to be doing well on “Celebrity Rehab” and “Sober House.” He was living in Salt Lake City, Utah, and reportedly making music with Days of the New when he was arrested on suspicion of drug possession during a traffic stop last month. TMZ reported on Wednesday that Starr had been mixing methadone and anxiety medication just hours before his death, according to his roommate. The report maintains that Starr was using the drugs as part of his effort to stay clean and had been “doing a pretty good job.” “In terms of recovery, for most that are successful, it starts with abstaining completely from the use of alcohol or other drugs,” countered Lindsey. “At the same time, we certainly have had some experience that in some cases some medications can be very helpful in people’s recovery. But it needs, absolutely, to be managed by a physician who is both specifically trained, experienced and certified in addiction medicine. This is not something that can or should be done by the individual or done with a physician who is not certified in addiction medicine.” So what separates someone like Starr from rockers like Keith Richards or Lemmy from Mot

Michaele Salahi: Kicked Out of Celebrity Rehab!

White House party crasher and The Real Housewives of D.C. annoyance Michaele Salahi was just kicked off Celebrity Rehab. The reason for this is simple: She has no actual addition. Sources on the set say Michaele was asked to leave Dr. Drew’s hit program because she has “no addiction,” and thus had “no reason to be there.” It’s a familiar theme for her … Michaele is as unwelcome on VH1 as she is at the State Dinner . Last week, we learned Michaele and Tareq Salahi were both cast on Rehab for reasons unknown. We feel bad that Michaele has MS, but … you can’t rehab that. Apparently the producers had this realization a little late. Wouldn’t you think the show could figure out that she wasn’t an addict before they cast her? Then again, they cast Michael Lohan and his ” anger issues .” Clearly they’re just trying to score whoever they can for ratings and work out the details later.
