‘X-Men: First Class’: Meet The Mutants

James McAvoy, Kevin Bacon and more of the film’s stars lead us through this new batch of X-Men. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Eric Ditzian James McAvoy in “X-Men: First Class” Photo: 20th Century Fox With “X-Men: First Class” being the fourth “X-Men” film released this decade, you might think you know a thing or two about our favorite friendly (and not-so-friendly) neighborhood mutants, but the latest installment of the franchise, out Friday (June 3), is here to prove you wrong. MTV News caught up with the stars of the summer blockbuster recently, and they were more than willing to clear up any preconceived notions we might have had about their characters. “Professor Charles Xavier, when we meet him, is actually Dr. Charles Xavier, but he becomes a professor during the course of the movie,” James McAvoy clarified. “His power is he can read, bend and manipulate your mind, and his relationship with Erik [a.k.a. Magneto] is probably the closest relationship he’s ever had.” “Erik Lehnsherr-slash-Magneto, he is ruthless, intelligent, charming and adaptable,” Michael Fassbender teased. Jennifer Lawrence explained how her character, Raven Darkholme/ Mystique, is connected to the two main men. “Magneto to her is kind of this iconic man that’s kind of the crush that she’s always had and she admires him very much. And Charles [Xavier] has always been like a brother to her,” Lawrence said. There are quite a few new characters to add to the mix as well, most notably Kevin Bacon as bad guy Sebastian Shaw, the head of the Hellfire Club. “My power is to be able to absorb energy and harness it and throw it back at whoever is trying to use that energy against me,” Bacon explained to MTV. Then there’s Emma Frost, played by January Jones, who is Shaw’s right-hand woman. “Her powers are twofold,” Jones explained. “She has the mental capacity to read minds or control them, and then also, physically, she can change into a diamond form, which makes her physically indestructible.” Some other new characters are Zoe Kravitz’s Angel Salvadore, a go-go dancer who is able to sprout wings, and Lucas Till’s Havoc, a liability who has no control over the beams he can sprout from his body. You can bet there are plenty more mutants that join the first class, but you’ll have to meet them on your own in theaters now. ‘X-Men: First Class’ Star Michael Fassbender Leads Us Through Trailer

Actor talks about two Magneto helmets, being a student and pulling from Ian McKellen’s performance and X-Men comics. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Michael Fassbender in “X-Men: First Class” Photo: 20th Century Fox Early in the evening on Thursday, the first trailer for “X-Men: First Class” popped up online — the general consensus on the footage being: dope! — and only hours later, we found ourselves chatting with star Michael Fassbender, who was in town to promote “Jane Eyre.” Charming, self-deprecating chap that he is, the 33-year-old actor agreed to walk MTV News through the trailer, pointing out his favorite bits and the scenes that make him cringe and offering some newsy insight into the way his character fits into the narrative. Fassbender plays Erik Lehnsherr, the magnetically enhanced mutant who eventually becomes the villain Magneto. But when we first meet Erik in “First Class,” he’s a close confidant to Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), who is gathering a collection of mutant-students and teaching them how to maximize their potential. As Fassbender noted, Erik is not Xavier’s fellow teacher, but his student. “I’m not a teacher; I’m a pupil,” he said. “Charlie boy is the teacher. That’s the cool thing. He sees the potential in this new race and gathers us all together to really fulfill our ultimate powers, to really unleash these gifts.” In the trailer, Erik can be seen rocking two different helmets. You won’t see a third enter the picture, Fassbender told us, though he stopped short of explaining exactly how and why the mutant switches up his headgear — “There are two versions. There’s that silver one and that red one,” he said coyly. But based on his nervous laughter on the topic, we have a feeling the helmet switch speaks to an important plot development, perhaps the point at which Erik formalizes his change from Charles’ friend to his nemesis. Magento, of course, was famously brought to the big screen in three previous “X-Men” films by Ian McKellen. Fassbender, however, took his creative cue not from the Oscar-nominated actor, but the character’s comics-based mythology as a Holocaust survivor who eventually relocates to Israel after the war. “I always had little remnants of [McKellen] somewhere in here,” Fassbender said, pointing to his head, “but I used the comics as the source material.” Check out everything we’ve got on “X-Men: First Class.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . ‘X-Men: First Class’: Everything We’ve Seen So Far

Before the hotly anticipated trailer debuts, we thumb through our first peeks at Magneto, Charles Xavier, Emma Frost and more. By Eric Ditzian Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr in “X-Men: First Class” Photo: Murray Close The first trailer for “X-Men: First Class” is only hours away from going live on the film’s Facebook page, giving us our first look at footage from the upcoming superhero flick. It’s been a long time coming, considering that Fox first gave a go-ahead for the script back in 2008. Since then, we’ve gleaned all sorts of insight into the project, from interviews with behind-the-scenes players to production rumors to casting confirmations. And since filming began late last summer, we’ve been gifted with a slew of set photos and official production shots. Before the trailer arrives, let’s review everything we’ve seen so far. First Look at January Jones Our initial peek at “X-Men” came early last September, when photos of the “Mad Men” star — in full, fur-hatted costume as telepathic Emma Frost — popped up online. The aesthetic for the outfit seemed to be retro-futuristic, at once in keeping with the film’s ’60s-era setting and the mutants’ ahead-of-the-human-curve outlook. The photos also indicated — based on the presence of a red-starred jeep and helicopter — that the military will somehow factor into the story line. Meet James McAvoy Weeks later, we got our first look at McAvoy as Charles Xavier . Although taken at night and a little blurry, the photos once again showcased the film’s retro vibe. According to a report from an onlooker on the Oxford, England, set, the scene in question features Xavier “getting doctorates in theology and philosophy from Oxford University in the 1960s, his manipulation of student uprisings using his psychic powers and the way he meets best friend-turned-archrival Magneto.” The Fallen Blackbird By December, the production had shifted Stateside and we got a tantalizing look at Xavier’s Blackbird ship. The aerial shots seemed to indicate the ship had crashed on a beach. The actual location of the shoot was an island off the coast of Georgia, but speculation suggested the in-film setting would be Muir Island, Scotland, where Xavier conducts experiments to better understand the mutant gene. Weeks later, a supposed “X-Men” storyboard indicated that a mutant may be responsible for a Blackbird crash. Look at All Those Mutants! In January, a photo popped up showing a bunch of mutants together, including Jones, McAvoy, Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Rose Byrne (Moira MacTaggert) and Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique). It turned out the photo was an early leak , and director Matthew Vaughn was not pleased. “When I found out, I said, ‘What the f— is this sh–?’ and Fox is running around trying to figure out what happened as well,” he said. “I agree. It’s like a bad Photoshop, which maybe it was by someone. It didn’t reflect the movie. I was shocked when I saw it.” Official photos soon arrived: Kevin Bacon as Hellfire Club baddie Sebastian Shaw, rocking an ascot and talking business with Jones; Fassbender and James McAvoy looking stylish and concerned alongside some of their mutant students; a helmet-clad Fassbender as Magneto ; and McAvoy employing Xavier’s gift of telepathy. Most recently, looks at Magento from behind and the full X-Men logo were published on Wednesday, ahead of the trailer premiere. “I’m a fan of X-Men. We’re not bastardizing X-Men, I’m trying to get them back to being whole again,” Vaughn said. “It’s definitely more serious and more realistic, and I think that’s something that had to happen. That’s my feeling about the world we live in right now. I think the glossy colorful superhero film sorta had its day.” Check out everything we’ve got on “X-Men: First Class.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . James McAvoy To Star In ‘X-Men: First Class’

Actor has been cast as a young Charles Xavier. By Adam Rosenberg James McAvoy Photo: Getty Images The X-Men are coming back, but not the way most know them. Fox is prepping “X-Men: First Class” for a June 3, 2011, release, and the big news is that James McAvoy will star as a young Charles Xavier, better known by his superhero name, Professor X. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news Thursday, though there’s no word yet whether McAvoy’s younger X will sport the older character’s trademark baldness. Previous “X-Men” movies, which have drawn characters directly from the comics, feature an older Charles Xavier played by Patrick Stewart. In “X-Men: First Class,” the story rolls the mythology back to a time long before Cyclops, Jean Grey and the rest of the crew lived and learned under the tutelage of Stewart’s Professor X. Next year’s movie will instead focus on the relationship between Charles Xavier and Eric Lensherr, the mutant who one day becomes supervillain and X-Men arch-nemesis Magneto. Before they parted ways, Xavier and Lensherr were close friends and allies. According to Fox’s description, “First Class” finds the two working together “with other mutants (some familiar, some new) to stop the greatest threat that the world has ever known.” These events directly inform their split, with Xavier going off to form his crime-fighting mutant X-Men while Lensherr assembles the more militant, human-hating Brotherhood. For McAvoy, “First Class” isn’t exactly new territory. The actor previously starred in “Wanted,” Timur Bekmambetov’s slick action movie loosely adapted from the Mark Millar comic books. Next year’s “X-Men” will be directed by Matthew Vaughn, who also has some recent comics experience, adapting Millar’s “Kick-Ass.” The story for “First Class” comes from “X-Men” and “Superman Returns” director Bryan Singer, who will produce with Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg.
