African-American teachers all across the country have decided to switch from the tradition BHM celebration for something newer, truer and more fun. Although there’s nothing wrong with honoring our forefathers by dressing up as them or reading about the same people — educators these days understand the importance of creativity and fun when it comes to teaching young Black kids about their history. Social media has sparked a trend of teachers decorating their door with Black cultural icons of the past and present, all with the help of a little construction paper. One of the first decorated doors to go viral was Glen Mourning , a 4th grade reading teacher at Friendship Public Charter School in Washington D.C. Mourning’s life sized door version of Colin Kaepernick had Black Twitter so proud. View this post on Instagram I’ve always dreamed of becoming an NFL superstar and when this guy right here decided to fight for love and equality…He changed my perspective on what being a big time play maker actually meant. The sign read, “They didn’t steal slaves. They stole scientists, doctors, architects, teachers, entrepreneurs, astronomers, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, etc, and made them slaves. Sincerely, your ancestors.” A photo of Lake Alfred Elementary School teacher Chanique Davis’ classroom door also made its rounds on social media. I mean, who doesn’t want to see features of a young Black girl rocking a tilted crown, natural hair and kente cloth during Black History Month. Davis told Edweek , “In a lot of corporate American settings, they don’t allow such a style. I wanted [my students] to know that this style is to be celebrated—it’s not to be shunned and it’s not anything negative. It’s a beautiful style, and … it’s just like anyone else’s hair: It’s welcomed, it’s celebrated. Since they are learning about the Martin Luther Kings and the Malcolm Xs in other settings, I want to be the one to let them know there are people who are currently adding to black history.” Anecia White of Harvest Preparatory School opted for the beautiful Black woman visuals too. She told People magazine “My source of inspiration for the door was every student in my classroom. They inspire me to be a better teacher every day, and I hope to inspire them to continue to learn about themselves.” Only two weeks left of Black History Month. We can’t wait to see else folks will come up with. *Raises fist in the air*

SMH: Baltimore High School Student Caught On Camera Sucker Punching Elderly Teacher For “Getting Smart” With Her [Video]

Student Caught On Camera Punching Teacher In Class Clips like these help us understand why that California teacher decided to deliver the smackdown to an aggressively disrespectful and threatening student last week. According to WMAR ABC News Baltimore , a female student at Frederick Douglass High School in Baltimore City got into a verbal disagreement with a teacher and was caught on tape sucker-punching the woman in the jaw in a now-viral clip. In the video, the young woman can be heard accusing the teacher of “getting smart” with her as another student attempts to calm her down. Next, the girl pushes the other student away and punches her teacher on the left side of her face, seemingly attempting to knock the woman unconscious. Still, the teacher exhibited grace and patience, calmly following the student out of the room and it appears attempting to reason with her. Several social media users who have posted the video claim that the teacher was fresh back in the classroom after a leave of absence to have surgical cancer treatment. SMH. ‘They’ Schools: Study Shows American Kids (And Teachers) Are Dismally Uneducated About Slavery

Kean Collection/Getty Images High School Students And Educators Woefully Uninformed About Slavery This should come as no surprise as many times as we’ve posted about some of the stupid lessons on slavery kids are receiving in the US, but a new report released by the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance project reveals the widespread failure to accurately teach the history of American slavery and enslaved people. According to Atlantic reports Teaching Tolerance conducted online surveys of 1,000 American high-school seniors and more than 1,700 social-studies teachers across the country. The group also reviewed 10 commonly used U.S.-history textbooks, and examined 15 sets of state standards to assess what students know, what educators teach, what publishers include, and what standards require vis-à-vis slavery. What they found was that only 8 percent of 12th-graders could identify slavery as the cause of the Civil War. Fewer than one-third (32 percent) correctly named the 13th Amendment as the formal end of U.S. slavery, with a slightly higher share (35 percent) choosing the Emancipation Proclamation. And fewer than half (46 percent) identified the “Middle Passage” as the transport of enslaved Africans across the Atlantic Ocean to North America. Fewer than one-quarter (22 percent) of participating high-school seniors knew that “protections for slavery were embedded in [America’s] founding documents”—that rather than a “peculiar institution” of the South, slavery was a Constitutionally enshrined right. And fewer than four in 10 students surveyed (39 percent) understood how slavery “shaped the fundamental beliefs of Americans about race and whiteness.” The teachers didn’t do much better than the students. While teachers overwhelmingly (92 percent) claim they are “comfortable discussing slavery” in their classroom, only slightly more than half (52 percent) teach their students about slavery’s legal roots in the nation’s founding documents, while just 53 percent emphasize the extent of slavery outside of the antebellum South. And 54 percent teach the continuing legacy of slavery in today’s society. Additionally, dozens of teachers rely on “simulations”—role-playing and games—to teach slavery, a method that Teaching Tolerance has warned against on the grounds that it can lead to stereotypes and oversimplification. Meanwhile, a large majority—73 percent—use “slaves” when talking about slavery in the classroom instead of “enslaved persons” (49 percent), the latter term of which has gained favor for emphasizing the humanity of those forced into bondage. That’s a strong point about slaves vs. enslaved persons. Did you ever consider the impact of the wording? Also those games and simulations are how so many teachers are getting in trouble. Teachers — stop playing GAMES. Just keep it 100 with the kids and make sure they know HUMANS were treated INHUMANELY! LaGarrett King, an assistant professor of social-studies education at the University of Missouri, served on the Teaching Tolerance advisory board that developed a framework for teaching American slavery—basically, the concepts that every graduating high-school senior should know—as part of the report’s recommendations. As a teacher educator, he said the study fills a significant void. Students training to be teachers, especially those being educated to teach in elementary schools, know little about the history of slavery, he stated, noting that “much curriculum and teaching around racially and ethnically diverse [people] features a fun—foods and festival—approach to learning.” By contrast, King said, the framework provides a guide to delve into topics such as slavery and black history with a thorough and academically sound approach, versus teaching slavery in reductive and superficial ways. “Can you teach slavery without it being psychologically violent to the children? The answer is no, violence will occur and is expected,” he said. “The key is the recognition of white supremacy and [of] the humanity of black people that helps aid in the complexity of the subject.” What steps do you think need to be taken to make sure that the harsh realities of slavery and the impact of the institution on America overall are taught? New Jersey High School Students Walk Out On Teacher Who Instructs Them To “Speak American”

Teacher Tells Latino Kids To “Speak American” An English teacher is under fire today as a student in her class caught her on SnapChat telling Latino children they need to speak “American.” According to People Magazine , the Cliffside Park, New Jersey school boasts a large population of kids from bilingual Latino families. But according to students, that has never stopped her from telling kids she passed in the hallway to speak English when she passed them speaking Spanish or Portuguese, or making generally racist comments in class. The video shows the teacher telling the kids that their Spanish-speaking is disrespectful, as soldiers are fighting for their right to “speak American,” not Spanish. She actually kicks the students who dare speak Spanish in her presence OUT of the classroom…but it appears they complied in protest. In the video, recorded by a student, the English instructor at Cliffside Park High School says: “Men and women are fighting. They are not fighting for your right to speak Spanish. They’re fighting for your right to speak American.” First of all…what? The students clearly had the same reaction to the teacher’s lowkey racist comment, which they say is far from her first, and decided to protest her ignorance by walking out. SMH. She’s BEEN doing this and facing no consequences? SMH.
