An Instagram photo of two gay fathers, Kordale and Kaleb, has gone viral for a number of reasons, some of which you might not expect at first glance. Kordale and Kaleb, who have three kids and a sizable social media, have been receiving homophobic and racist backlash after sharing the image below: The idea of two gay black men raising kids, it seems, is just too much for Twitter to take. Even some positive responses are more like backhanded compliments. Many of the more overtly racist, homophobic Tweets have been removed, but the ones like “finally a black gay couple” are equally as problematic to the duo. Most of the positive feedback hit on two key points: That Kordale and Kaleb are a black gay couple, in general That it was nice to see black men taking care of children Indeed, the controversy surrounding this photo raises many broad cultural questions. Kordale and Kaleb responded to them in a statement to the Huffington Post : As far as the positive; yes we are two gay men with three kids who have no problem with preparing them for their education every morning; that comes with anything and everything they may need for school! Our kids are blessed to have three parents (Kordale, Kaleb and their Mother) who love, care and support them in every decision they have made and will continue to make as they get older. We are blessed to have the ability to provide for them in ways that a lot of people cannot for their family, which ultimately makes us happy knowing that they don’t want for much! Our main objective as parents is to provide, love, educate, support, encourage, and love some more! In regard to the negative, people fail to realize that we are people too with kids who love us. We do what is necessary for them to succeed in this ever-changing world but it’s sad that we’re discriminated against because of our sexuality and/or what we do behind closed doors – which is no one’s business. In the same breath, we take all of what’s been said in stride. The picture was put out on social media for an opinion so we can’t be mad when people give just that: an opinion. People tend to think that gay people cannot raise their children to be heterosexuals. Instead, they have derogatory thoughts of us “tainting” our children or “confusing them” with what society sees deems as wrong an unmanly because we’re gay. But this is all comical because people forget where a lot of gays come from: a heterosexual household. This is another prime example of where we are as a nation in 2014 – continuous discrimination against gays. Being gay is the new normal for a lot of people and judgment isn’t needed, just equality! We may be gay but this does not mean we are incapable of what a heterosexual couple is capable of! Us gays are just as educated and passionate about what we do and how we do it!
Saturday Night Live will soon have a new Oprah Winfrey. And Michelle Obama. And Condoleezza Rice. The iconic NBC sketch comedy series has responded to its lack-of-diversity criticism by hiring Sasheer Zamata. The comedian will debut on the January 18 episode of the program, which will be hosted by Drake . Zamata trained at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York and will become SNL’s first African-American female since Maya Rudolph left five years ago. After hiring six new cast members prior to this season, none of whom were black, Lorne Michaels held auditions across the country last month for someone to fill this role. And Zamata – a graduate of the University of Virginia and someone who has appeared on Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell on FX, and Inside Amy Schumer – beat out stiff competition to land the part. Evander Holyfield may have made his living as a professional fighter, but son Ewin says his dad is really just a lover. Yes, even of gay people. The ex-Heavyweight Champion made headlines over the weekend when he said on UK Celebrity Big Brother that homosexuality is a handicap that can be fixed by a physician. Evander Holyfield Slams Homosexuality as a “Handicap” But Ewin Holyfield tells TMZ that his father is deeply religious and was merely expressing a biblical belief. “My dad is the most loving and caring person you will ever meet. He treats everyone like a human being … even if they are homosexual,” Ewin says , adding that he has a gay uncle who gets along very well with Evander and concluding: “My dad feels that being gay is a choice … and naturally that’s how things work. “You cannot procreate and make a baby with two women, or two men. But at the same time, my dad is not going to judge someone for their sexual orientation.” Again, it’s worth noting that Evander Holyfield has TWELVE KIDS by SIX WOMEN and has been divorced three times. As he contemplates the controversy drummed up by his Big Brother remarks, perhaps Holyfield can go find a few passages in the bible that talk about those topics as well.

Jack Harry is under fire, but he’s not out of a job. The Kansas City-based KSHB 41 Action News anchor was hosting the station’s weekly sports show last Sunday night when the topic turned to the struggling Kansas Jayhawks basketball team, who had lost three out of four. Speaking to a colleague, it seems pretty clear Harry referred to the squad as the “gayhawks,” causing an uproar on social media: Jack Harry Slams Kansas as “Gayhawks” Despite seemingly clear video evidence, KSHB News Director Carrie Hofmann is standing by Harry and claiming he didn’t actually utter this pejorative term. “We believe he said Jayhawks,” said Hofmann in a statement. “It’s open to interpretation. I think there are people who hear Jayhawk, I think there are people who hear ‘Gayhawk’ and I think there are people who hear variations of those. I stand behind Jack. I believe Jack. I understand what people think and I certainly am sorry if people are interpreting it any other way.” Hoffman says she spoke to Harry, who denied he used the homophobic insult and who is “flabbergasted” by the controversy. Harry has been with the NBC affiliated since 2002 and faced no disciplinary action from this incident. And that doesn’t sit well with critics. “He’s always been unprofessional,” said Jason King, a former Kansas City Star and ESPN sports reporter who now works at Bleacher Report. “He just tries to get a rise out of people.” Watch the video for yourself and decide: What, exactly, did Harry say?
Alec Baldwin has been suspended by MSNBC for hurling homophobic slurs at a photographer earlier this week, and the actor has issued a real apology. After previously denying he used a gay slur , then claiming he didn’t know an obvious anti-gay epithet was anti-gay, he’s finally admitting what he did. Alec Baldwin Goes OFF on Reporters The 55-year-old says in a statement, “I did not intend to hurt or offend anyone with my choice of words, but clearly I have – and for that I am deeply sorry.” Trying to rationalize, or at least explain his rage in context, he adds, “What I said and did this week, as I was trying to protect my family, was offensive.” Baldwin admits it was “unacceptable” to shout the phrase “c**ksucking f*g” while chasing a photographer on Thursday. In his apology, Alec concedes: “Words are important. I understand that, and will choose mine with great care going forward. Behavior like this undermines hard-fought rights that I vigorously support.” Baldwin’s issued his apology after the controversy he ignited and MSNBC announced it was yanking his weekly show off the air tonight and next Friday. Anderson Cooper , among others, called him out for the ridiculous story he tried to spin, which he seems to have come to grips with now at least. Meanwhile, the actor exchanged heated words with multiple reporters yesterday (see above) and appeared to hit a parked car while he was driving off.
