There’s a good chance American Idol ‘s finale didn’t thrill you this year. You may have tuned out early in the season when plenty of decent talents were voted out of the Idol megadome, or you may have balked at Lee DeWyze, one of the show’s pitchiest dawgs, who became a judges’ favorite and ended up winning the competition. Crystal Bowersox Signs Record Deal

Here’s to hoping Crystal Bowersox has the same success as last year’s American Idol runner-up, Adam Lambert . Earlier this week, the unique, talented singer signed her first professional deal with 19 Recordings/Jive Records. Look for her to release a blues/folk/rock album later this year. “I’m really grateful to be given this opportunity to make an album and let people hear my music, and I’m looking forward to working with all of the folks at 19/Jive,” said Bowersox, who lost to Lee DeWyze on the season nine finale. Fans can see Crystal, Lee and company in concert this summer, as the American Idol tour kicks off its 49-date run July 1 in Detroit.

‘American Idol’ Season Nine: Neither Lee, Crystal Nor Casey Thought They’d Win

DeWyze, Bowersox and James never thought of themselves as front-runners. By James Montgomery Crystal Bowersox Photo: MTV News Modesty is an underrated trait — unless you’re a finalist on “American Idol,” a show that exists solely to discover music’s next great megastar. The whole point of appearing on it is to win, thereby securing a recording contract and the opportunity to become unbelievably famous and wealthy. Modesty, it would seem, has no place on the “Idol” stage. Except for the just-completed ninth season, that is. Because, wow, was this season’s top three modest. At no point during the show’s run did any of the contestants seem to think that they could actually win, and despite the best efforts of journalists — who labeled the final three as “the front-runner” (Crystal Bowersox), “the underdog” ( eventual champ Lee DeWyze ) and “the dark horse” (Casey James) — that never really changed. In fact, based on conversations we’ve had with all three finalists, none of them ever remotely considered themselves the favorite. Not in the slightest. “I never considered myself to be the front-runner, simply because ‘American Idol’ is a show where literally anything can happen,” Bowersox said. “A lot of people that went home we never expected them to go home. … My goal was just to do my best each week and see what happened.” “Not only did I not think that I was the front-runner; I knew that I was not,” James laughed. “A lot of people got into reading the things on the Internet, and I just stayed away from all that. So I don’t know if there was anything that said that, but I never feel that way, and I don’t think it was really the case, either.” “I mean, people were saying stuff like that to me, I’m not going to lie about that, they’d be like, ‘Oh, you’re going to win,’ and I’d be like, ‘Oh, well, there’s still seven weeks to go,’ ” DeWyze added. “I never thought I had it in the bag or anything, but I think you have to have a sense of confidence in yourself, especially when you’re in a competition … [but] being a front-runner or an underdog, or whatever people said, it was hard not to listen to that stuff. You have to ignore it, because it is not a good thing.” That modesty holds true even now that the show is over. Sure, DeWyze is happy he won, but Bowersox and James seem positively giddy that they didn’t. “I’m cool with number two,” the dreadlocked dynamo smiled. “I gave it my best shot.” “I couldn’t have asked for anything better,” the Texas heartthrob added. “I mean, honestly, for me, I’m not going to say anything other than I feel like I’m exactly where I should be.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Crystal Bowersox Was Proud To Break The ‘American Idol’ Mold

‘Unique people are really what colors the world,’ the ‘American Idol’ runner-up tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Crystal Bowersox Photo: MTV News During her run on “American Idol” — and perhaps even more so during her time off the show — Crystal Bowersox made it a point to march to the beat of a different drummer (or didgeridoo player ). From her choices of songs to her epically dreadlocked mane, she worked very hard to be her own person and never really fit within the “Idol” mold. And yes, she’s aware that her uniqueness might have cost her the season-nine crown and that a certain part of the American public might consider her to be a bit, well, odd, but she has no regrets, and she doesn’t plan to change anytime soon, no matter what people might think of her. In fact, she’ll openly discuss all the things that made her stand out from the “Idol” herd, because they’re also the things that make her an individual. “Oh yeah, like the fact that I have missing teeth and that I don’t comb my hair. I mean … I think that unique people are really what colors the world,” she told MTV News. “It’s a beautiful thing to be your own individual, and in high school, you get pushed into being the same as everyone, and then, once you’re an adult, you look for the differences in people. That’s what’s interesting about life and humanity.” Though she said she never felt out of place on “Idol,” Bowersox also realized that things are different now that she’s the newly crowned runner-up. Seems folks are tripping over themselves to try to label her and her music, to package it and market it a certain way. And that — more than anything else — is what gets her ire up. “It bothers me a little bit, because why pigeonhole anything? I’ve got songs that are country, I’ve got blues and rock … R&B … there’s really nothing that I’m not open to, and I don’t really want to be in one genre,” she said. “It’s really the market that does that. People don’t know how to sell your album unless you are in a specific category on the shelf. So, hopefully, that won’t happen too much [with me].” But you get the feeling that, no matter what happens with her post-“Idol” career, Bowersox won’t go down without a fight. She may look like a fish out of water, but in reality, she’s been prepping for this moment her entire life. “My whole life has been this crazy. Not, like, this kind of crazy, but just crazy in general. I roll with the punches, I always have,” she smiled. “I’ve never felt stronger in my life. There’s nothing I can’t handle right now — media coverage, my personal life, all this stuff — I’ve always been an open book through my music. There’s not much that I’m afraid to say. … There’s a lot I have on my mind, a lot of things I want to say, and I’m not afraid to say ’em.” Did Crystal’s individuality help or hurt her on “Idol”? Or both? Discuss in the comments. Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. The American Idol Finale: Goodbye, Mr. Cowell [Recaps]

No more! There will be no more Idol ever again. Well, not as we know it, anyway. Simon Cowell packed up his boxes last night and, after great fanfare, exited the Thunderdome. Let’s do a post-mortem, shall we? More

Crystal Bowersox, Alanis Morissette Unite For ‘You Oughta Know’ On ‘American Idol’ Finale

Duo performs Morissette’s mega-hit after Bowersox’s solo performance of ‘Ironic.’ By Eric Ditzian Crystal Bowersox and Alanis Morissette perform together on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX Back in February, Crystal Bowersox took the “American Idol” stage to perform Alanis Morissette ‘s “Hand in My Pocket.” It didn’t go so well. Simon Cowell accused her of sounding like a thousand buskers outside a thousand different subway stations. Bowersox got her revenge on Wednesday night’s (May 26) finale when she united with Morissette for a duet that brought the crowd at the Nokia Theatre to its feet. The “Idol” finalist got the performance started with a solo take on Morissette’s “Ironic,” a song that reached the #4 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She then turned dramatically toward the back of the stage and welcomed her fellow artist onto the stage for a duet of the Grammy-winning best-seller “You Oughta Know,” another cut off Morissette’s 1995 album Jagged Little Pill. As Morissette strode out under the bright blue lights of the “Idol” stage, the two singers exchanged verses, crisscrossed the stage and finally met in the middle, voices wailing, smiles wide. Buskers they weren’t. And coming on the night when Bowersox could be crowned the victor of the ninth season of “Idol,” the performance was not without its share of ironies. After Cowell dismissed Crystal’s effort in February, the singer bounced back to establish herself as one of the show’s undeniable front-runners the very next week when she busted out a killer version of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Long as I Can See the Light.” She hasn’t looked back since. And Bowersox has come to count Cowell as one of her biggest supporters. On Tuesday’s show, Cowell praised Bowersox’s performance of “Up to the Mountain,” saying, “I thought that was by far the best performance and the song of the night. And since this is going to be the final critique I’m ever going to give, I would just like to say that was outstanding.” Related Photos Crystal Bowersox’s ‘American Idol’ Experience ‘American Idol’ Season Nine Performances Related Artists Alanis Morissette
